About
Field Guide on Tour
Indie folk singer-songwriter Field Guide is the musical project of Canadian artist Dylan MacDonald. Known for creating dreamlike soundscapes with earnest lyrics and sparse instrumentation, Field Guide released his debut full-length album Make Peace with That in 2021 followed by 2022's sophomore self-titled album released on Birthday Cake Records.
The beautiful and intimate single "Leave You Lonely" off of Field Guide has amassed more than 20 million streams and set the stage for the Manitoba-based musician's swelling fanbase and much critical acclaim. Under the Radar Magazine said that his music embodies "the hushed intimacy of isolation, yet also sport a sweeping romanticism, born of rosy nostalgia and late-night longing."
Having supported several artists on tour, including Leif Vollebekk, Bahamas, SYML, Wild Rivers, JP Saxe, and Penny & Sparrow, Field Guide is preparing to embark on his very first headlining tour with several dates throughout Canada and the U.S. in winter and spring 2023. Don't miss your chance to see this gifted artist in a city near you.
Field Guide Live in Concert
Manitoba-based musician Dylan MacDonald took on the moniker Field Guide after his friend sent him a field guide of prairie trees to provide some inspiration for his music. It turns out that it did more than that -- it ended up being the inspiration for his band's name. It's fitting, MacDonald said an in interview with Sparky in 2021, because "sometimes I feel like I'm writing a field guide for my past self in song."
An integral part of the Winnipeg creators community, including Boy Golden, Slow Spirit, Roman Clarke, Kris Ulrich, and others, the artists often share demos with one another and collaborate on each other's albums.
Field Guide's 2022 self-titled album is replete with local sounds and inspiration -- he recorded acoustic guitars near Manitoba's Riding Mountain National Park in a woodstove-heated cabin during one of Manitoba's coldest winters.
In a 2022 interview with Atwood Magazine, MacDonald said, "In some ways it seems silly to have made a self-titled record so early in my career, but I feel as though this record sums up a significant chapter of my songwriting and of my life as a person and artist...I can already feel my writing/production morphing into something new," MacDonald said.
Despite his love of his hometown community, MacDonald is looking forward to touring extensively throughout North America in 2023 on his first headlining tour.
