About

Secret Path is a collection of ten songs that tell the story of Chanie Wenjack (whose teachers miscalled “Charlie”), a twelve year-old boy who died fleeing the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School near Kenora, Ontario fifty years ago. Chanie was attempting to walk the 400 miles back home to the family from whom he was taken. Downie was introduced to the story by his brother Mike, who shared with him Ian Adams’ Maclean’s story from February 6, 1967, “The Lonely Death of Charlie Wenjack.”

"Chanie haunts me. His story is Canada’s story. This is about Canada…The next hundred years are going to be painful as we come to know Chanie Wenjack and thousands like him – as we find out about ourselves, about all of us – but only when we do can we truly call ourselves Canada.” — Gord Downie

Show started an hour late because of computer problems at ticketing. Perfect for me because my flight from Thunder Bay was late as well. A dark story brought to the surface by a wonderful arrangement of song and video.

My words cannot ever describe the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. I was moved to tears more than once. Thank you Gord Downie for being such a selfless person. You are my hero.

A heartbreaking and important story for Canadians

by megmacs on 2016-10-24Roy Thomson Hall - Toronto

Like most, I had never heard or learned anything about the Residential School system growing up in Canada. I felt equal parts guilt, shame, and hope... as a parent, my heart breaks to know this was still happening in my lifetime, and I didn't know or have any reason to find out, until now. Like Gord said, "let's not celebrate the last 150 years, let's celebrate the next 150." It's okay to start now, but let's start.

    Magical

by mathu75 on 2016-10-24Roy Thomson Hall - Toronto

Not having heard the music beforehand I was unsure what to expect. I couldn't have been more impressed with the music and performance. Kevin Drew and Dave Hamelin did such a great job with these songs. Gord sounded amazing and the supporting band was fantastic! This was a very special show and I will remember it always.

by Dar107 on 2016-10-24Roy Thomson Hall - Toronto

This was a very special evening, with very special guests. A night me and my daughters will not forget. Thank-you Gord and friends for bringing this hidden shameful history to light. Thank-you to Charlie's family for sharing his story and sharing your pain and heartache with us all.

    Hauntingly perfect.

Though the mood was somber and the songs were dark, Gord put on a top tier performance at RTH this past Friday. I wish there was more time to see this legend, but I'll take what is given.

    Very moving event

by Miker78 on 2016-10-24Roy Thomson Hall - Toronto

The whole production was very moving and inspiring. The telling of the story through Gord's words really spoke out loud his emotion on the whole situation. It was very different from any other show I've seen but I'm glad I experienced it and wouldn't change a thing about it.

    Being more than just aware...

by Sadie2 on 2016-10-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

This event was moving and a reality check. It was a visual to what many have choosen to simply know of but not really get what the hell was going on with our Aboriginal and Metis peoples. I hope that with Gord and his gang getting the real conversation going will kick start that conversation. The one thing I loved about this event was the unity and connectivity of the people at the NAC that night. I am very honoured to have been a part of it and now to keep the conversation going on the residential school horrors.
