HERBIE HANCOCK IN CONCERT:

Few jazz artists have achieved the degree of crossover success enjoyed by legendary post-bop luminary Herbie Hancock. Beginning with 1973's seminal Headhunters, Hancock unleashed some of the most innovative and accessible jazz funk of his generation, and he continues to innovate both in the studio and on stage. As one of jazz's most beloved living legends, the opportunity to see Hancock is the stuff of fan dreams, making his 2014 appearance at the Hollywood Bowl one of the most coveted concert events of the summer.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Chicago, Hancock was recognized as a child prodigy from an early age, receiving a classical music education and performing with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as early as age 11. Despite not having a jazz teacher, Hancock developed a unique harmonic sense by ear, earning a reputation with his exceptional piano playing that ultimately caught the attention of Miles Davis. After joining Davis's Second Great Quintet in 1963, Hancock enjoyed a period of tremendous success and growth as he forged a unique and influential style. His association with the Blue Note label resulted in some of the most popular jazz records of the '60s, but it wasn't until the 1973 release of Headhunters that he would achieve international superstardom. The album marked a watershed moment in the development of jazz funk, skyrocketing to the top of the Jazz Albums chart with now-classic crossover hits like "Chameleon" and "Watermelon Man." Always one to experiment, Hancock pioneered the use of electronic instruments in jazz, and the results, such as the synth-heavy hit single “Rock It,” found head-bobbing fans across the globe. With more than 40 studio albums and a half-century of touring under his belt, Hancock's continued presence on the road in 2014 is sure to be the stuff of legacy and legend.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Herbie Hancock wove all of the jazz classics he made famous in to new arrangements that gave his ensemble a platform to demonstrate their superb individual talents. The group played over two hours and then played an encore."

"Great Show... A nice mix of Herbie Hancock's jazz classics, some newer songs, and an improv piece. Very innovative encore especially if you want to see someone doing a jazz solo with Conch Shells!"

"Virtuoso musicians treated us to unexpected and unimaginably difficult rhythmic interplay. Each player was completely in control of his instrument and contributed equally to the magic of the event. At 71, Herbie brought the fire and burned up the stage."

    Distractions

    by Jazzfan on 2023-07-02

I would prefer the houselights off during the performance. There were too many distractions including people using their cell phones to photograph and people wandering around. You should give people the opportunity to photograph before the concert starts, then tell them phones off.

What a great show - so much talent on the stage but the best part everyone seemed like they were having FUN. Herbie is into his 80s and still got it!!

Ageless Herbie Hancock still delivers ...

    by DavidB on 2023-07-02

I've had the pleasure of seeing Herbie Hancock play live several times and he delivers the goods EVERY time. Seeing this 83 year old legend this time with my 16 year old son and I was yet again amazed by his skill, his energy and the way he continues to musically meld with his uber-talented band. The finale was the iconic Chameleon where HH was strutting around wailing on his keytar and even finished off with a jump-stop! If you haven't yet treated yourself, or know some younger person who craves musical education and experience, I strongly suggest that you get to a Herbie show ASAP.

    Where was Herbie?

by JazzFan57 on 2018-07-04Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Overwhelmed by an irrelevant funk band, Herbie was largely missing, or self-absorbed in an irrelevant bad science-fiction theme on synthesizer that opened, and fell flat. Mostly disappointing, but the Chicago band was often good on their own. Hancock teased the audience with a few bars from the openings of some of his well-known tunes but broke away into something else buried by the band.

HERBIE HANCOCK +TD Toronto Jazz Fest = Perfection!

by 5andman on 2018-07-02Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Having the legendary Herbie Hancock play Toronto's Jazz Festival is a no-brainer. Thank you to the organizers for assembling this year's event. That said, neighboring jazz festival in Montreal has the better line up! Hopefully, the organizers will step up for 2019 because I was blown away by the line up in Montreal.

    Worst jazz concert ever attended.

by Jazz100 on 2018-07-02Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

The worst jazz concert I ever attended. Music: closer to world music but with no clear direction. Logistic: How can you pay $85 for a ticket and 25min after the show started people were still entering the venue. Very unpleasant.

Speakers were too loud from my seating position and bass mix sounded like a low rumble throughout the concert.

Both Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock are great musicians individually, however, when playing together, they weren't on the same page most of the time. Much of the time they seamed to play against each other. There were moments when they found each other musically and the sound was great, but for a concert of this caliber, the entire performance should have been better prepared.

    An honour

by eddieo on 2015-03-18Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - Vancouver

It was a privilege to experience these two greats in such an amazing venue. The evening was perfect and as far as I am concerned could have gone on for hours. The only negative was people who ignored the no pictures rule; it was unCanadian and distracting.

    Jonny as headliner!

by Dinamo on 2010-08-08Erie Canal Harbor - Buffalo

As a true Jonny fan from the beginning, I can tell you he just keeps getting better and better. This is the 3rd time I've seen Jonny, and I loved the venue because I was able to get very close to the stage for the first time. I brought my 15 yr old daughter with me. She is obsessed with the Jonas Brothers, and I thought it my duty as a mom who grew up in the rockin' 70s & 80s to turn her on to the real thing. We got that in Jonny. His studio albums are great, sure, but NOTHING compares to seeing him live. My daughter has been playing my Jonny CDs since Friday night. Way cool! Thanks for a fantastic night. The only improvement I could suggest is to give Jonny a show of his own. He is more than worthy of holding the crowd all night long.

    Herbie Hancock was phenomenal!

by Anonymous on 2010-08-07Erie Canal Harbor - Buffalo

Well, what do you say about watching an artist who has influenced and inspired so many musicians. Simply amazing. The music business is so backwards because I only had to pay 10 dollars for a ticket and was able to get right to the front of the stage. The tickets should have been 500 to 1000 to get that close to someone who is at that level of playing with his history in the business and his own personal chapter in music history.

    The most music

by fusionfan on 2010-08-07Erie Canal Harbor - Buffalo

The most diverse and incredible music I've heard from two acts in one show in recent memory perhaps ever. Truly thought-provoking inspirational music performed at a towering level. Highly recommended.

I didn't care so much for the quite cheesy Image Project songs, but the other parts of the concert were just great! The chemistry between Hancock and the rhythm section was incredible.
