About

What is Vancouver Sevens?

Three days of world-class rugby, paired with the best costume party you've ever seen! This weekend is forecast for rugby with a high chance of a party. After years of success in Vancouver, this has become an iconic tradition, and this is surely Your Year. Still not convinced? Here are Seven reasons why you should be coming to Vancouver Sevens:

1. It's the best party in town, with an electric atmosphere that you have to experience for yourself!

2. The best teams in the world all under one roof at BC Place. Will returning champions like Argentina and New Zealand top the podium, or will we see an underdog take the number one spot?

3. Canada's own women's Olympic rugby silver medallists on home soil. Cheer on our Olympic medal-winning squad right here in Vancouver!

4. The globally renowned costume party. The fancy dress tradition turns a weekend in February into Halloween like you've never seen it before.

5. Three full days of world class sport in your backyard. The three-day pass gives you access to the entire tournament, so you can follow your favourite teams from first kick-off on Friday all the way through to Sunday's grand finale. Sports!

6. This is the longest running annual sports event of this size and scale in Vancouver. Come see what the fuss is all about!

7. There's something for everyone. Want to introduce your little ones to rugby? Stay tuned for more on opportunities for them to get on the pitch at BC Place!

From a x-player and former coach, the Canadian men's team leaders need to get this shit together so it is more meaningful to host. The current format with the women and men's teams playing side by side was excellent. Great to see the women's game has progressed to a high standard of good rugby. Their intensity and skill was visible. Also good to see Argentina rise to become the leading team over the usual cup final of Fiji v NZ. I miss the fire blasts. Bring back that visual please. Less people dressing up...not sure why not. All in all a good day out.

  • Underwhelming Programming/Overwhelming Space

There is certainly a great deal of fun and hoopla surrounding the Svns in Vancouver. Most of this however happens in the concourse of BC Place and periodically in the stands. While I was only there for the Saturday/night, the focus and gaze is on the audience and their costumes and increasingly as the day wears on; their behaviour. While the games move along at a nice pace with scarcely a dead moment on the pitch, one finds it hard to follow closely the action on the field with any intensity due to the cavernous space, lack of commentary, poor main scoreboard display (no score or timer), and distance from the players. Then again, I am not a rugby fan, so it could be that I am way off base here... but I do not think so. Imagine this in a proper mid-sized stadium full to the brim. Intimacy is what the fans want and work towards (costumes, camaraderie, fandom) but the let down by the venue and ultimately, the staged show. Great event, bad venue. 'Nuff said... That said, the house band was fabulous! A very nice touch.

total rip off at concession! 6 hr event needs reasonable food and drink prices. Will never go back!

  • A WOW event every year!

We just love the energy, the pace, the atmosphere and so much more of this event! The Sunday is the highlight day to watch the semis and the finals. People get dressed up in crazy costumes and the chanting and hollering for your favourite team is fabulous!
