It was an amazing concert, and well played, not to loud but just right. It was also a very fun time, he got the crowd involved and it was just a blast. But after he wouldn't take a picture with me, because of the apparent chemicals in my hair, but oh well atleast i got to meet him :)

by ABarman on 2011-03-16Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - VancouverShow was very good. People were dancing in the aisles. Hugh was very personable with the audience, he made you feel like you were in his house. It was my first time to watch an event in the Chan Centre For The Performing Arts and I was very impressed.
Rating: 5 out of 5by justlooking on 2011-03-15The Banff Centre - Eric Harvie Theatre - Banff Just saw Hugh Masekela and his 5 piece band at the Banff Centre - AWESOME! The guitarist's work reminded me of Santana and Mr. Masekela is a superb show man. Each musician was amazing in his own right. He had the whole place dancing. Yes!!

Rating: 5 out of 5 Hugh Masekela's performance was unbelievable!!
by Wouter on 2011-03-15Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - VancouverWith a voice that can travel spectrums in the audible range, with a flawless mastering of the trumpet, with a band that seamlessly tunes in and supports AND with perfect acoustics of the venue and skillful mixer and sound technician this concert couldn't have been better. Lots of enthusiasm in the audience, partly from South Africa, made this concert just better and more interactive. Lots of respect for Hugh who is a prime example of the benefits of aging....
Rating: 5 out of 5 Hugh Masekala
by burnabycal on 2011-03-15Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - VancouverI last saw him in Ottawa probably close to twenty years ago. His show was quite different this time. More along the jazz line than the blues line. But he was still totally awesome. He interacted with the audience and seemed to enjoy the audience as much as they enjoyed him.
Rating: 4 out of 5 What can I say!
by whatilike on 2011-03-14Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - VancouverUnbiased...not! I've listened to Hugh Masekela for many years now and I would never miss an opportunity to see his performance. What impressed me most was that while Hugh has matured, he continues to be completely at ease playing with a relatively young band. Masekela is more than a musician. He like many other South African musicians is an ambassador. His grace, rhythm and poise places him firmly in the pantheon of the likes of Makeba, Mahlatini, Abdullah Ibrahim. He is a beacon to memory, and he evoked many on this night. His music is an indelible part of the soundtrack of my life.
Rating: 5 out of 5 Bra Hugh was FANTASTIC
by Blackmanmisunderstood on 2011-03-14Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - VancouverThe man is 71 years old but his dancing moves and energy does not show. He was very entertaining, youth at heart, great sence of humour! Please bring him back soon!
Rating: 5 out of 5 Hugh Masekela - Still goin' strong!
by Martyn on 2011-03-14Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - VancouverHugh Masekela is still a great performer. His current group (all young!) are consummate musicians. His blend of African tunes, rhythms and jazz is, quite simply, unique. His flugel playing may not be as agile as it once was, but he's still got what it takes to make an excellent evening. The fact that he's a political radical (still!) and staunch defender of human rights - he talks about past experiences as narratives to the pieces he performs - adds extra value to the whole concert experience. Not to be missed!
