Iowa State Cyclones Women’s Basketball History

The Iowa State Cyclones fielded their first women’s basketball team during the 1973–1974 season and subsequently joined the Big Eight Conference in 1976. Iowa State became a founding member of the Big 12 Conference in 1996 and have since won three conference tournament championships and one regular season conference title. The Cyclones qualified for their first NCAA tournament in 1997 under coach Bill Fennelly, who has continued to build the team into a national powerhouse over nearly three decades. Among their 21 NCAA tournament appearances, Iowa State advanced to the Elite Eight in 1999 and 2009 and reached the Sweet Sixteen most recently in 2022.

Iowa State Cyclones at Hilton Coliseum

Iowa State plays in the Hilton Coliseum at the Iowa State Center in Ames, Iowa. It opened in 1971, with light and sound upgrades executed in 2016 and more renovations planned for the next 10 years. The arena currently seats 14,356 and hosts Iowa State's men’s and women's basketball programs, gymnastics, volleyball and wrestling. The arena was named for beloved Iowa State President James H. Hilton.
