There were changes made to the original program of The Spirited Away Suite to the Mononoke Suite. I'm A bigger fan of Mononoke Hime but I love Spirited Away as well. It was surprising to see this program change two years later. I'm one of the few fans of Joe Hisaishi who finds his minimal works quite whimsical and hypnotic and I thoroughly enjoyed the first half of the program. I enjoy listening to his minimal music on YouTube on a lazy Sunday afternoon. I've been really grateful for Hisaishi's music outside of his Ghibli works. Hearing him talk about his other works has helped even a layman like me with no formal music education to understand that music can have a more logical framework and still draw people in. While it might have appealed to the wider North American audience to have had an all Ghibli performance, I felt really blessed to have had a chance to hear to his minimal compositions in a live setting. It truly was a night to remember!
Hisaishi Joe seemed still very passionate about his job and he played twice more just to satisfy the audience after “Encore” requests with their loud 👏. The best composer & music producer EVER! I will not forget this day until I die. I desperately hope to see him again in a near future, which might not even happen since he is a little too old. 🥲
I was hoping there would be more works from Ghibli, but Hisaishi ended it with a Princess Mononoke suite that blew me away.
I waited for this concert since 2019. Been a Ghibli fan for years, saw Joe Hisaishi was performing, and had to get the tickets. Then the global storm hit, and nothing was the same. Life went on; I graduated, went to New York for my masters, discovered so much more of myself and grew to be a more independent, empathetic, and confident person. Two years later, I’m finally sitting in the seats that my 2019 self has bought as a completely changed person. And listening to Joe Hisaishi live was the musical culmination of all of my perseverance, struggles, victories, and growth. The last song, Ashitaka and San, the finale song to the incredible film Princess Mononoke, spoke to me on a deeply personal level, reminding me that I am enough, and that time heals all traumas. I felt a sense of completeness. I was free. I had won. Thank you Joe Hisaishi for your wonderful music and even more wonderful performance. Thank you for giving hope to a once insecure and scared boy and watching him grow to be the man he is today. Thank you for your love.
It sounds so weird sitting there when the orchestra started. The conductor, the artists were great. Yet the sound came put like music from CD player, recrded 2 channels. It is such a pity.
At first I thought this was a Studio Ghibli concert so I was a little disappointed to realize it wasn't when i read the program. That disappointment lasted about 5 minutes. What a beautiful concert! So so glad I went. The TSO was amazing.
Joe is a famous artist. A lot of fans including myself are coming for Joe (and only?). The concert is great. The first half of the concert is not that impressive. Always feel there is a little issue on the sound produced, not sure if it is because of the hall itself, or the instruments, or the performers, or just my ears. Overall a great show, a bit over priced if only for a famous name.
When Joe started playing the piano, I almost cried
He not only composes yet plays the piano himself. His music live is a whole other level of magic. Every song had its own story or conversation between instruments. He played his original works that were made before the pandemic and of course brought out the famous Ghibli music in the end from some soundtracks of princess mononoke. The soprano singer that was in the show did an amazing job as well. I'm glad I was able to experience it.
