KURT VILE AND THE VIOLATORS IN CONCERT:

Kurt Vile is the shy guy at the eye of a swirling hurricane of beautiful sonic textures. With his hypnotic fingerpicked guitar melodies and mumbled, cryptic lyrics, Vile lays the dark and earthy groundwork of the group’s sound in concert. His backing band the Violators take the folk-inspired tunes into the stratosphere with lush, spiraling guitars, driving drum patterns, and melodic basslines as each song builds to a climatic conclusion that envelops the listener. Ticket buyers can’t help but get swept up in the warm washes of folk, indie, and psychedelia that Kurt Vile and the Violators consistently deliver in performance.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Kurt Vile (born in Lansdowne, PA in 1980) began his musical journey when his father gave him a banjo at age 14, though he soon switched to guitar to begin recording demos. His career picked up in 2003 when he met Adam Granduciel and formed The War on Drugs, a project that remained his primary focus until the release of the band's 2008 debut Wagonwheel Blues. With his own music calling, Vile left The War on Drugs during the ensuing tour to focus on his solo career, releasing his debut album Constant Hitmaker later in 2008. He inked a deal with Matador for the 2009 follow-up album Childish Prodigy and gained exposure by touring with high-profile labelmates like Dinosaur Jr. and Thurston Moore. His third solo offering Smoke Ring for My Halo arrived in 2011 and signaled a major commercial and critical breakthrough for the singer/songwriter as publications like Pitchfork, Mojo, and Uncut ranked it as one of the best albums of the year. Kurt Vile and the Violators continue to work on their fifth album while perpetually thrilling live audiences with their increasingly sophisticated songs and superlative sonics.

Kurt Vile has inspired me to do many amazing things, and it was my first time seeing him play live!

  • Incroyable!!!

Il s'agit d'un spectacle incroyable. Kurt Vile est un grand guitariste ainsi qu'un grand mélodiste. J'ai adoré le spectacle.

  • Up Front and Very Personal

by Wayno on 2024-07-01The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The core concert in such an intimate venue was great, but having Kurt Vile invite Travis Good (“my brother”) up to shred guitar during the entire encore was the real treat. I hadn’t realized how much the Sadies (including the late Dallas Good) meant to Kurt, but now I respect him more than ever. Well played!

  • Ended suddenly...no real goodbye

by Furiosa on 2022-11-07Théâtre Corona - MontrealRating: 2 out of 5

Someone passed out in the audience, and neither the band nor security knew what to do about it. There was a lack of proffesionalism. Kurt Vile didnt really offer closure. While this has happened at other venues with other artists and not been awkward, this was incredibly awkward. Security seemed stressed and not confident.

  • Awesome show, great vibes

    by Lou_Musicgeek on 2022-10-31Théâtre Corona - MontrealRating: 4 out of 5

The Corona theater is a great place and the show was awesome. Kurt and the band were very generous, the sound was superb, the crowd was nice. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is no one's fault, someone had a health issue during the encore and the show had to end on an awkward note.

  • Kurt Vile rocked

  • Too loud/ too raunchy.

by Youngster on 2022-10-29The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

The live performance was far removed from any studio performance any of our group of 7 music lovers experienced. Sound quality was distorted and unnecessarily loud. It would have been nice to be able to distinguish subtleties between the guitar changes with every song. There proved to be no benefit and he could have just stuck with electric throughout. Considering any merits to this performance, he played one cover of a John Prine tune, which was the highlight of the evening. Myself and party of 7 left early with great disappointment. Fortunately, no one suffered any unnecessary permanent ear damage that we know of. Venue was in a state of severe disrepair and to my relief the ceiling didn’t collapse; however this does not look far off. Air quality, considering we are in the middle of a pandemic was brutal. Hot and stuffy, seating cramped and filthy. Early in the performance, I noticed some kind of bug bite on my hand? Bedbug or lice? Won’t come back to this derelict decrepit structure and highly recommended others stay clear. Thoroughly dissatisfied. 👎🏻

  • Kurt Vile rocks the house

by Tampa on 2022-10-29The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Kurt Vile and the Violators were spot on Wednesday night at the Danforth. Great set list, sound quality was amazing. And as usual the band was world class. Kurt was slinging that six string, amazing guitar player. Best show I’ve seen in years.

  • Guitar at its best

by Beez on 2019-08-06Sony Centre for the Performing Arts (soon to be Meridian Hall) - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Phenomenal show. His unique signing style is perfectly matched to guitar playing. Although a small band, the complexity and layers of great guitar sound and mind blowing techniques made them sound like a 13 piece band. Opening act Jennifer Castle was a pleasant surprise. Very polished, outstanding singing and harmonies.
