About

Le Tigre on Tour

Le Tigre released their first album, Le Tigre, in 1999. Their EP From the Desk of Mr. Lady, released in 2001, was followed-up by the album Feminist Sweepstakes. In 2004, the trio released their most recent studio album, This Island.

Le Tigre went on hiatus in August 2007. In 2022, the trio reunited to play their first show in over a decade as part of the inaugural This Ain't No Picnic festival in Pasadena, California. The festival set the stage for a much-anticipated reunion tour. Le Tigre are known for feminist advocacy and politically-charged lyrics.

The trio recently gained legions of new fans on TikTok, with the songs "Deceptacon" and "Phanta" going viral in a series of fanmade videos. In an interview with Spin, co-founder Johanna Fateman mentioned the TikTok phenomenon, "I find the videos on TikTok. I'm just endlessly fascinated by how creative people are, and I love how they use our music. 'Decepticon' is like an indie classic or whatever, and I just love seeing how it reverberates for people in different times in different parts of the world, and how they use it to construct their identity online."

Le Tigre Live in Concert

Le Tigre consists of members Kathleen Hanna, JD Samson and Johanna Fateman. Hanna and Fateman have collaborated since they were teenagers. Hanna (who inspired the title of Nirvana's first hit by writing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on Kurt Cobain's bedroom wall) was the singer of riot grrrl pioneers Bikini Kill until their breakup in 1997. She left the West Coast and moved to NYC to form Le Tigre with Fateman and Sadie Benning. Benning left after a year to pursue a filmmaking career, and Samson joined them onstage.

In the years since the formation of Le Tigre, and subsequent hiatus, JD Samson has been an assistant arts professor at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Johanna Fateman has flourished as an art critic, Kathleen Hanna has worked in the nonprofit sector, restarted Bikini Kill and continues with longtime project The Julie Ruin.

Reflecting on her time in the band, Fateman told Spin in 2022, "We were really unafraid. And that will be one of my lifelong lessons from this band: Just do it, you know? Not in the Nike way [Laughs]."
