About

Though still a teenager Lorde is swiftly establishing herself as a mighty force on the music scene, co-headlining shows with established acts like Vampire Weekend and Arctic Monkeys.

The young yet prolific New Zealand-born singer/songwriter, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Connor, released her first EP The Love Club, her first No. 1 single "Royals", and her first album Pure Heroine back-to-back-to-back. Her sound is a sparse affair that confidently drifts on the strength of beats, loops, and phenomenal vocals.

The pop and alternative worlds don't always mix, but fans of both styles have flocked to Lorde's electropop-driven sound and soulful voice. And despite her pop successes she's managed to craft a bit of an anti-pop image for herself, not afraid to sound off with opinions - both good and bad - about fellow young stars. Fans who've bought tickets to see Lorde in concert rave about her raw talent while looking forward to watching her grow as an artist and performer.

Lorde was discovered when she was just 12, after her performance of the Duffy song "Warwick Avenue" at a school talent show caught the ear of a record label talent scout. When she's not writing music Lorde listens to pop, hip hop, and electronic music and cites soul legends like Otis Redding as well as modern acts like Bon Iver and James Blake among her influences.

    Amazing

by MacSharp on 2014-06-02Sound Academy - Toronto

Being a fan of her music, I had heard that Lorde didn't sound very good live, which after watching her on stage for an hour is something that I would completely disagree with. Being somebody that goes to more than 80 big venue shows a year, it really means something when I say Lorde blew me away! Better show than Aerosmith or Madonna! Even if you don't know anything but her hits, I would highly recommend putting up the sixty bucks to go see her. I've already got my tickets to go see her a second time. I went in thinking that the show would be mellow based on her studio work, but it was a borderline rock show that was pleasing for the head-bangers too.

    Lorde is a compelling entertainer

    by mojave3 on 2014-03-19Sound Academy - Toronto

Saturday, March 15 was most definitely a very special evening. At just about 10pm Lorde arrived onstage very quietly and went on to perform a phenomenal set just over an hour in length. Most of the set included music from her album and ep. A few extra songs which have become standards in her set such as "Easy" and "Swinging Party" were very well received. A fine visual presentation, excellent band mates and Lorde's phenomenal entertainment skills made this show a must see. I would definitely return to see Lorde again. Venue is one of the worst in Toronto...the only bad thing about the night. Location is terrible, parking expensive and venue is like a big cavern. I usually dread going to the Sound Academy but chanced it because of the great buzz surrounding Lorde. She delivered and made me forget about the venue limitations during her set.

Awesome concert, can really belt out the songs just as good as the recording...if not better! Great stage presence, cool visuals, nice clear sound. The surprise here was the opener, Lo-Fang! Hadn't heard of them before, definitely recommend checking them out if you haven't either.
