Saturday's concert at the NAC's Southam Hall was my first live encounter with the beautiful soprano Loreena McKennitt. My partner and I were seated in the first row of the Ampitheatre section and looked forward to hearing McKennitt's legendary artistry. McKennitt did not disappoint! Her voice was strong and beautiful. I don't know of another soprano who can sing Celtic with the same lilt that she can! Her high register strikes a huge chord in my soul. Both of us enjoyed the ensemble. We were less convinced that McKennitt's musings about the origins of her songs were really that insightful, but that didn't diminish our enjoyment of the evening.
What did diminish our enjoyment was the - in our view - overamplification of the event. Maybe we're just at that age where we're getting a bit hard of hearing, but from the first note we were nearly blasted out of our seats. What was worse - more often than not we couldn't make out most of McKennitt's lyrics. Perhaps some of this is inevitable in a live performance, but we felt a lot of it was due to an overly live handling of her microphone balances.
It was unfortunate enough that I would be reluctant to attend another McKennitt performance at the NAC. But that said, I would recommend to others that they go and hear this most beautiful of Celtic interpreters. Even without making out her words, the overall effect of her ensemble is to create an evocation of the Celtic spirit.
