Louisville Cardinals Women’s Basketball History

The University of Louisville Cardinals women’s basketball team kicked off their first season in 1975. Louisville belonged to several conferences, including the Kentucky Women's Intercollegiate Conference and Big East, before becoming a permanent member of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2014. Over the years, the Cardinals have claimed eight regular season conference titles and six conference tournament championships. Among their 27 March Madness appearances, Louisville have advanced to the Final Four four times and placed as the runner-up in the National Championship game twice, in 2009 and 2013. Jeff Walz has coached the Cardinals since 2007.

Louisville Cardinals at KFC Yum! Center

Located off-campus in downtown Louisville, the Cardinals’ home court at KFC Yum! Center seats 22,090 fans, making it the second-largest college basketball arena in the country. Opened in 2010 on the Ohio River waterfront directly across from the Clark Memorial Bridge, KFC Yum! Center celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2025 by undergoing a major roof renovation project. Known well for The Ville'ns student section, Louisville games get even more of a great homecourt advantage with "color" events such as "White Outs," "Red Outs" and "Black Outs" during which fans are encouraged to wear the same color to games.
