    Lucinda captivated the audience

    by OMC1 on 2009-10-19Park West - Chicago

Lucinda captivated the audience tonight. She exploded onto the stage with a killer rendition of "Real Live Bleeding Fingers and Broken Guitar Strings" which was perfectly played by her backup band, Buick Six. The audience responded with almost ear deafening applause. It was that good ! She proceeded to play tunes from "World Without Tears", my favorite Lucinda CD. She didn't let up as she soulfully offered up "Righteously", "Those Three Days, "Ventura" etc. As she swung into tunes from "West", she held us in awe knocking out "Unsuffer Me", "Come On" with a blistering accompaniment from Buick 6, and "Everything Has Changed". After delivering a few tracks from the "Little Honey", she came back for an unforgettable encore of songs from the earlier CDs. I can honestly say that this was the best of the 5-6 Lucinda Williams' shows that I have seen in the past 10 years. And, it is most certainly the best show of any artist that I have seen in the past 5 years. Bravo, Lucinda!!!

    I really liked Lucinda

by duker on 2009-10-15Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

In my opinion she lived up & exceeded expectations. I really liked the fact that she introduced most songs with some history behind them. This was helpful because until about 5 months ago I didn't know who she was. Her backup band (the buick 6?) was very good & versatile playing a number of different instruments. It was a very solid show. My only regret was that the Queen Elizabeth Centre staff did not notify the concert goers (flicking the lights maybe) that she was back performing her 2nd set. I (and many others) missed part of her 2nd set.

    Diamond in the rough

by NMarie on 2009-10-12Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

It's a "sweet old world" when Lucinda takes to the stage as she did last night at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Toronto. With her smokey, edgy vocals and her honest rock-n-roll swagger, this singer/songwriter owned the stage and delighted the audience with her engaging performance of songs ranging from the subtle, haunting acoustic strum of "I Envy the Wind" and "Lonely Girls" to the grinding jump-out-of-your-seat energy of "Joy" and "Get Right with God". Superior acoustics in the hall complimented the rich performance. How very "Righteously" to end a Canadian Thanksgiving weekend in this way. Thanks for the good things in life, like Lucinda Williams and Buick 6 for rendering such beauty and passion, lyrically and instrumentally. Cheers and be sure to catch Lucinda the next time she sways into town.

    Another stand-out performance from Lucinda

by Lars on 2009-10-12Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

Last night 30th Anniversary concert was one to remember. What made it so special was that she chose songs that she rarely performs live. She has the best back-up band (Buick 6) who shone, once again. Unfortunately, they didn't open for her this time, which was a disappointment. The Queen Elizabeth Theatre is a nice venue, but the acoustics were far better when she played Massey Hall last year.

Great show with a few exceptions.

by dundasdan on 2009-10-12Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

It was my first time to the QE Theatre (and Lucinda's first time performing there). She commented twice that the venue sounded excellent and from my perspective there wasn't a bad seat in the house (it was half empty so I moved around to check out a few different perspectives). The set list drew from the 5 most recent albums and it was fabulous. The backing band was great and really knew the material well. My only complaints are that a) the guitar player on the left of the stage was WAY too loud for the first 5 or 6 songs of the second set. He drowned out to the acoustic guitar and drums completely and mostly drowned out the amazing lead guitar. Can't believe the sound man didn't turn him down! The problem fixed itself when he changed guitars. b) the energy in the room was really low and I think this was due to the fact that it was half full (due to thanksgiving). I think it would have made a huge difference if Lucinda Williams had been TOLD that it was Canadian Thanksgiving and aknowleged that people were at home eating turkey. This lack of awareness creates a kind of disconnect with the audience. She did say "nice of you to come out on a Sunday" but this wasn't just any Sunday. Makes me wonder if she was bummed out at the low turnout.

Lucinda Williams rocks 30 years on...

by lucindawannabe on 2009-10-11Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

What a beautiful and intimate show. I loved the asides and glimpses into what she was going through as her career developed. Her voice is as strong as ever, the band was awesome and the venue sound was amazing.

We are big fans of Lucinda's and this show was my birthday present to my husband'. She's sounds even better live and it was great to hear her early folkways songs as well as favorites like Passionate Kisses and Jackson. She sounded great, the band sounded great and the acoustics of the hall were great too. If anything we are now even bigger fans.

Lucinda Williams' 30th Anniversary Tour Part I

by Dubkarma on 2009-10-11Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

Lucinda Williams and Buick 6 at Toronto's Queen Elizabeth Theatre gave a great show, but I have to say their performance last year at Massey Hall was even better. Lucinda and the band didn't seem as energetic and passionate as they did last year and the sound system—or perhaps the mixing engineer—was far superior at Massey Hall. Or maybe Massey Hall just has much better acoustics. In any case, I'm looking forward to Part II tonight. Wouldn't miss it!
