Something not right about Lyle's voice

by BenAbe on 2023-10-21National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I was looking forward to this concert although I'm not all that well acquainted with either musician. While it was mildly entertaining and I appreciate the guitar playing of Leo, it was a bit slow and strained between the performers and might have been better with J. Hiatt. Unfortunately, I guess musicians sometime lose their voices and the show must go on, but it was really hard listening to Lyle, especially when I quite like his singing.

Always great to see Lyle in concert.

by Swordlily on 2023-10-18National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I'm a huge fan of Lyle Lovett. This was my 3rd time seeing him in person, averaging 10 years between each performance. All in vastly different venues. I travelled a fair distance for this, adding significantly to the overall expense. The show seemed slow to warm up and it was palpable within the audience. I had a great seat not too close but just enough distance from the stage. Leo Kottke is an apt performer but a truly great guitarist. Although I was unfamiliar with him, it was apparent some of the audience knew of him. The repartee between Lyle and Leo was easy, sometimes amusing, and indicated a long friendship. Overall I expected much more music. I understand the added expense of performing with backup musicians. I'll take comfort at having had the pleasure of seeing Lyle with his Large Band at the first concert I attended in Minnesota. I guess my next concert will have to find me travelling to the USA, hoping for a little more. I don't regret this concert, I'm always thrilled to see Lyle.

A great time was time was had by all.

by Lee on 2023-10-16National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

We went to the concert expecting a good time and got a great show. I don't know what to expect but the camaraderie between Lyle and Leo was most enjoyable and Leo's playing was out of this world. It was only surpassed by Lyle's singing and entertaining . A great Concert!!

The concert and the experience was great . The right amount of storytelling and performing. And the wife liked it too. Happy wife , happy life.

    Disappointed

by Jet on 2023-10-16National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

We went to the concert hoping we would hear some of Lyle Lovett’s songs and Leo great guitar playing, but instead, we heard mostly two friends exchanging stories and very little music. We were extremely disappointed and didn’t think we got our money’s worth. We left before the show was over.

    Voice problem

by Kvb on 2023-10-16National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Quite disappointed in Lyle Lovett’s performance. His voice has changed quite a bit. Had I known, will investigate better next time, I would not have attended. Leo Kottke was entertaining, but rambled.

An evening of stories and music

by CD on 2023-10-16National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It was a great concert. I was disappointed when John Hiatt had to bow out but Leo Kottke was marvelous. I was unfamiliar with his music but have seeked it out since. I really enjoyed learning about the stories behind the songs.

    a little disappointing

by Joel on 2023-10-16National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Clearly, Lyle Lovett has issues with his voice, and probably should not be performing live. It's very sad to listen to his voice cracking and barely hearing his words because he seems incapable of holding a note. I absolutely love Lyle Lovett, and it saddens me that he is no longer able to be the awesome live performer he used to be. Leo Kottke was delightful: funny with his stories and his guitar playing is nothing short of exceptional.

    Left after 45 minutes

by Jano on 2023-10-16National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Left after 45 minutes. Lyle Lovett was ill and should have cancelled. Said a few words and sang one song badly. Constantly wiping his nose. Leo Kottke was either very drunk, stoned or a combo and did not have one coherent thought. Had difficulty playing his guitar. Total lack of respect for those who paid to be there.

    Sadly Lyle’s vocals were awful

by Bear on 2023-10-16National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

We really enjoyed the on stage banter. The song choices and guitar playing of both Leo Kottke and Lyle were excellent, however Lyle was unable to sing them well. His vocals were terrible and although I am a fan , it left me feeling as though this show should have been postponed or canceled. I’ve seen Lyle a few times and was really looking forward to this show. We traveled from Montreal and rented a room for this event and it was not worth the effort.
