About

M83's "Midnight City" was one of the most anthemic songs of 2011, ending up at the top of Pitchfork's year-end list and propelling album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming to Top 40 chart positions around the world. The band's subsequent concert tour gave ticket buyers a close-up view of what makes them an international success — namely, a deep catalog of polished songs, a laser and light show that blows all audiences away and the infectious stage presence of founding member Anthony Gonzalez. If there's one word to describe M83's vibe, it's optimistic; and whether it's the band's exhilarating anthems or their danceable synth-based instrumentals, you'll definitely walk away feeling good. "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming" was their breakout, but seeing them live puts them over the top.

The band got its start in Antibes, France, with founding members Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau. After releasing two albums, 2001's self-titled debut and 2003's "Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts," to critical acclaim, Fromageau departed and left Gonzalez to pursue his singular vision. Gonzalez soon followed up with 2005's "Before the Dawn Heals Us" and 2008's "Saturdays=Youth" before culminating with "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming." Gonzalez has also contributed to several remix collections and a film soundtrack while attracting a steady stream of his own collaborators for M83. This band shows that "overnight success" is often years in the making, and now that they're in the limelight, they have the chops to back it up.

    M83 concert review

by Revir on 2012-09-07Edmonton Event Centre - Edmonton

Though the show started late, in my estimation, it was well worth the wait. The performance was amazing, the energy level was high, the musicians were obviously enjoying themselves and their interaction with the audience was appreciated as well. I had a blast!

    M83 in true form

by kidm on 2012-06-12Sound Academy - Toronto

This is the largest venue I've seen them and they didn't disappointment - my only criticism would be there over-use or dependence on backing tracks/piped sounds and the lack of songs from Saturdays = Youth (no Kim & Jessie??) and tracks off of Disc 2 of "hurry Up We're Dreaming". However an incredible show nonetheless.

M83 - Off the charts amazing!

    by mjones242 on 2011-11-20Lee's Palace - Toronto

Lee's Palace as a venue seemed a bit small for M83 (perhaps The Phoenix would have been the better choice) but regardless, the concert was absolutely brilliant. Who knew that Anthony Gonzalez had such stage presence? It was great to see Morgan Kibby in tow sharing some amusing banter and fantastic vocals throughout.

    m83 fantastic friday

by mojave3 on 2009-07-19The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

the m83 concert on friday, july 17,2009 far exceeded my expectations and is so far up there as my favourite concert so far of 2009 equalling only primal scream from this past march. the chosen set was incredible and i absolutely knew i belonged there when the band began playing "teen angst". i can only say that i felt the music with a stabbing jolt to my heart. i have been lucky enough to feel this same impact at previous music events but have not felt it for a long time so i thank m83 for really making me feel with their unbelievable music. graveyard girl, skin of the night kim and jessie were fantastic. we own the sky and couleurs were outstanding. i also loved the band, the stage setup including the postioning of the band members, drummer, and the second keyboardist/vocalist. morgan kibby looked fantastic and i loved her outfit and accessories - very hot. and anthony gonzalez (gonzales?) is an absolutely gorgeous man. the entire band was very into the concert and genuinely appreciated the toronto audience's excitement and adoration. truly an event that i am honoured to have attended. i will look forward to seeing the band again.

    m83 good while it lasted

by socksandsandals on 2009-07-19The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

great band to see live but was way too short. less than 1 hour set (incl. the encore). the openers, madrid, played longer than the m83. I still recommend seeing them if you like the band but expect the show to end short (make plans to go out elsewhere after the concert).

    A bloody fantastic performance

by ningali on 2009-07-19Richards On Richards - Vancouver

Well, I'm a HUGE fan of the venue (Richard's on Richard's) who I think have the best sound in the city. M83 were hugely sonic and fun as always, and they spiced up some tracks that created alot of energy for us. These guys (and girl) always give a great show, and I loved this one.

That's what this show was. Impressive and powerful sound that didn't hurt my ears at all. Their performances were intense and very musical. Tons of positive energy from the crowd too, everyone was super in to it.

    M83 rocked The Phoenix

by kevd321 on 2009-07-18The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

The M83 concert definitely delivered. Their opener Madrid set the mood perfectly for what was a great night. M83 from start to finish delivered all the crowd favorites. Their stage presence was electric and their sound was unforgettable. Definitely a band that you can love on cd but then get brought to a whole new level when seen live.

I Literally Asked Morgan Kibby to Marry Me

by artfuldodger on 2009-07-15Richards On Richards - Vancouver

I have been listening to M83 since their debut album in 2001 and had been waiting to see how their atmospheric synth rock translates to a live gig. It translates very well! While I was a bit disappointed to see that Nicolas wasn't with Anthony for this tour (due to exhaustion and quibbling), Morgan Kibby's hot bod and Kate-Bush-esque vocals helped to dissipate my disappointment. I really liked how M83 were not afraid to play some of their slower, empyreal songs. Most of the concert was very high energy, but the show started off with some chill, synth-based songs that really set the mood. It was a fun, memorable concert, but it would have been *amazing* had Anthony been more gregarious and had there been more seating at darn Richards on Richards.

M83 continuous to amaze every time!

by cultlogic on 2009-07-12Richards On Richards - Vancouver

This was my second time in half a year attending a M83 concert. I didn't think any other experience could make the first one better but the second time around was even more amazing than the first. They definitely update their set list so it isn't the same. Providing that they have a fantastic catalog of music to play live, every song is bound to be catchy and dance-able. The chemistry between the band members are extraordinary. Anthony and Morgan appears to be part of the crowd, dancing while still playing. Their energy becomes absorbed by the crowd, and for an hour or so, everyone is entranced by the music. The rest of the world drifts away and all there is to it is body-music synchronization.

    M83!!

by turtledub on 2009-07-12Richards On Richards - Vancouver

Treat yourself and go see M83 when they come to town. For three people on stage, a couple of computers, a guitar and a drum set, the sound is HUGE. If the world was full of hipsters, these guys would be playing arenas.
