    Always a Great Performance

by Greg Reitsma on 2019-11-06National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Matt Mays has always had a way of drawing people in, and this concert was no exception. In such an amazing concert setting to begin with, it felt like the was an instant connection with the audience . His sense of humour, passion for music, and true kindness as a person quickly becomes noticeable . Not only through his music , but also with his words. His band is obviously a full package not only including friendships, but an amazing ability to rattle your bones and soothed your soul. The concert was a constant up lift and steady climb , that by the end , could not keep smiles or expressions off of people faces. Being a musician, maybe I am more favourable towards his music in general, but his performance made me want to quit my job and pursue a full time career in music! When asked the next day, “How did you enjoy the concert?”, there were far to many words to explain how much fun and wonderful it really was.. But I think I just summed it up . It was Excellent!!

Matt is the Canadian version of Bruce Springsteen. He puts his heart and soul into ever song when he performs live. I can’t wait to see him again!!!

Great concert. Starts out slowly and builds into a great crescendo. All of the 8 band members were great to watch and very talented. A truly Canadian experience.

    Matt Mays at the Commodore

    by statman71 on 2013-04-01Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Wow. Such an unbelievable performance by Matt and the band. This was just a day after their friend and bandmate Jay Smith was found dead in his hotel room the morning after a show in Edmonton. The guys were obviously playing with heavy hearts, but they nailed every song. This was probably the most moving concert experience I have ever had. I cannot wait to see Matt Mays the next time he comes to town.

Good Music, Good Band, Muddy Sound

by nprsha on 2013-03-30Molson Canadian Studio at Hamilton Place - Hamilton

During this tour, MM has been pushing his new album hard. Not that it's a bad thing, but I would have liked to hear some more of the older tunes. I think we heard about 9 songs from the new album, and maybe 1 or 2 from any other album. Although I've seen MM (or MM&ET) a few times live, on this night their sound was off. Don't get me wrong, they're playing was spectacular, it just seemed the audio was very muddy. It made it difficult to differentiate between different guitar riffs and melodies and the piano was almost inaudible except when played by itself. It did stand out, however, when they played my favourite song, "Terminal Romance." It is very possible that the audio issues were a result of the venue and not the band as their sound is usually much clearer. Otherwise, the guys were great. It was a lively performance filled with good music, some fun stories, and some nicely remixed classics. Despite some of the flaws, this show will always hold a special place for me. Less than a week after this performance, Matt Mays lost a key member of their group when guitarist Jay Smith (El Torpedo, Rock Ranger) passed away in his hotel room. As a grand gesture showing the respect that MM has for their friends, family and fans, they decided to continue their tour with all proceeds going to a trust fund for Jay's two kids.

    A Meaningful Tribute

by Takingover on 2013-03-29Flames Central - Calgary

I saw Matt when they were here last at the republik and it was incredible so I brought friends to see him again. A good friends mom had just passed and with the passing of their lead guitarist the night before I was amazed to see the band rock and grieve in such a honest way. You could have unplugged or cancelled but we saw a band go for it. Live their life through the music and honor their friend in the show. It was heavy and moving and beautiful. I felt lucky to be in the room and very amazed at the talent and heart of the band.

    Should have read the ticket

by Tweed1 on 2013-03-26Molson Canadian Studio at Hamilton Place - Hamilton

I was very disappointed that it was standing only. I should have noted that on my ticket. I have severe back problems and can't stand for long periods of time. We watched most of the opening act who were very good. We left for a bit to rest my back so I could watch Matt Mays. I was only able to stand for a short period of time before the pain set in. My husband asked the security guy if we could use a stool or chair...no. He said I could go up to the balcony but not my husband. So I sat on the floor for almost all of the concert. I don't think he believed me. After watching me sit on the floor for the whole concert he came over during the last song and let both my husband and I go up to the balcony. WOW the encore was amazing!!!! The whole show was great, I just couldn't see anything from the floor. I do thank the security man for letting me both see and hear a few songs. We've been to the Studio several times and there was always seating. I'll be very careful to check that the next time we go.

    Up close and personal

by tutin on 2013-03-26Molson Canadian Studio at Hamilton Place - Hamilton

The show was great. Opening band was a pleasant surprise. Matt Mays put on a great show - maybe a little over-amplified for the venue as the guitars over shadowed his vocals.

    Matt Mays was amazing!

by Lynner71 on 2013-03-26Molson Canadian Studio at Hamilton Place - Hamilton

Nice intimate venue to see him performand allowed for great ineraction with crowd. Good stories and jokes inbetween songs. Although, considering it was the "Molson Canadian Studio" it would have been nice to actually have a beer inside the venue, not out in the hall.

    Matt Mayes

    by JoC3 on 2012-10-30Louis' Pub - Saskatoon

First of all, being a Sunday, I expected the event to start earlier. I was disappointed that I could not buy bottle beer or coolers. I'm sure this is SLB's antiquated policy. There was not enough seating available with a view of the stage. The staff did not know the name of the opening band and they weren't introduced before or any time during their performance, which was mediocre. The sound was bad, very muddy throughout the whole concert. Matt's performance was good, although after waiting all night to hear Cocaine Cowgirl I was very disappointed with his rendition that night and did not even stay until it was over. Perhaps if the sound had been cleaned up it would have been better. Even when there was a lead break it you couldn't really tell who was playing it unless you watched carefully. Matt was great with the crowd and I was impressed that he even jumped down to the dance floor to mingle with the fans.

Matt Mays new band has old feel

by dINTZ on 2012-06-18Lee's Palace - Toronto

Awesome show Saturday at Lee's Palace. It started with a bunch of new songs, enough to make me think a new album can't be too far off. The new songs were good, a mix of tempo and feel ranging from "maritime coffee house open mic" to "light the fuckin roof on fire in the name of guitar rock." After the extended set of new material, they turned to their archives and burned Lee's to the ground, as one had come to expect from Matt Mays. The new band seems to be a great fit, on their way to matching the chemistry of el Torpedo. Notable mention was their cover of The Boss's "Glory Days" as part of the encore. One of the new guitar players (don't know his name, apologies) ripped the lead vocals a new poo-hole (Pujol?) and somewhere, Bruce felt his dick move in fierce tribute. Almost as important as the talent of the new band was the return of Matt Mays' comfort and charm on stage. It was reminiscent of the old days and might mean he'll pick up where he left off , which should make us all be very happy for the state of rock in this great land, as it reverberates through the Canadian shield like a viking war drum.

    Matt Mays - Canada's Rock

    by putty016 on 2010-09-08Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

This show was extremely memorable; the band was electric and their energy surged through the crowd. As soon as you've seen Matt Mays and the boys live, you understand that rock and roll is what they do for a living, and they do it very well. I was fortunate enough to be right at the front, right under Matt himself. From this angle rock and roll is at its best, and from this angle the sweat of the band pours on you! It sounds gross, but when you're in it its the coolest thing. The other half of the show was the great venue that is the Commodore Ballroom. After seeing countless shows here I can say without a doubt that this venue does not disappoint. The atmosphere is perfect for partying with your favorite band.
