About

Minnesota Timberwolves History

The Timberwolves joined the NBA in the 1989 expansion that also brought the Orlando Magic into the league. The Wolves struggled during their first seven seasons, but the arrivals of first-round draft pick Kevin Garnett, general manager Kevin McHale and head coach Flip Saunders signaled a turnaround. The franchise earned its first playoff berth in the 1996–97 season — the first of eight straight years in the postseason — and its first winning record a year later.

In the 1999–00 season, led by Garnett and rookie Wally Szczerbiak, the Timberwolves posted their first 50-win season, the first of three straight years they reached that milestone. But it was not until the last year in that streak that they advanced past the first round of the playoffs.

With guards Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell joining the Timberwolves for the 2003–04 season, the team won their first division title and first two postseason series, eliminating the Denver Nuggets and the Sacramento Kings. They ultimately fell to the Los Angeles Lakers in the conference finals.

After Garnett was traded away in 2007, the team rebuilt around all-star Kevin Love, but failed to make the playoffs during his tenure in Minnesota. They ended a 13-year drought without a playoff appearance by finishing 47-35 in the 2017–18 season, good for second place in the Northwest Division. In 2024, All-Star center Rudy Gobert earned the franchise’s first Defensive Player of the Year Award, while backup center Naz Reid won the Sixth Man of the Year Award.

Had a great time, my son loved it as well - was fun, exciting and loved seeing something different. We watch on TV often, but this was far better. I will go again anytime. Awesome seeing Clyde Drexler ! , loved the "dunk" displays - overall a great time.

  • NBA is not NHL

    by Spitfire1300 on 2012-10-26MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

Without any emotional attachment to either team and no big name stars playing it was interesting to watch but it wasn't the Jets.

  • NBA - Entertaining

by MyShArOnA on 2012-10-26MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

I've always wanted to see NBA live. Great energy all around but the game itself seemed a bit sloppy.I found it a touch expensive getting a bit close - which I felt was necessary to really have a good experience. Time-out and half time shows were fun. I'm glad we had some "cheering" coaching-we needed it. The Winnipeg crowd will need to learn how to be excited for the game!!!

  • NBA needs to come back to the Peg.

  • by roju6 on 2012-10-26MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

It was great to see an NBA game back in Winnipeg again, even if it was just a preseason game. Not the best basketball as some of the main players didn't get a chance to play but was still fun to go to anyway.

  • Lots of Fun!!

Loved the atmosphere, great seats for extremely cheap. Went to an NBA game in Toronto sitting in similar seats and paid WAY less to see this game.

1st time to a game. Tickets were easily picked up, transport to the game via LRT was easy and fast. Eating selection was not that good. Selecting tickets was random and no specials came aup as it was stated during the game. Overall great night out.

  • Wolves Nuggets Game

    by Kras224 on 2011-02-07Target Center - MinneapolisRating: 4 out of 5

The event was very entertaining. The wolves actually made a game of it but faltered in the last few minutes which kept the crowd into it. would go again to see another game

  • NBA at Syracuse was a lot of fun

by Rodgers on 2010-10-17Carrier Dome - SyracuseRating: 4 out of 5

Our family when we have the chance enjoy going to Syracuse to watch events like the NBA exhibitiion game between the Pistons and the Timberwolves. To be able to see the game live at a reasonable price really adds to the overall enjoyment during the season as you can relate much better to the teams and the players. To have the opportunity to go to the game at a reasonable price and fairly close to home (3 hour drive) was well worth it. The Carrier Dome is a good facility and our seats were pretty good (lower level behind the basket). It was a good show and I hope the NBA goes back again to Syracuse for a game soon.

  • Great game

by oassis on 2010-04-12Target Center - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

Its was my first NBA game, Lakers are my fav. team. The game was great, my seats we great, the only thing I did not like is Kobe did not play.....Oh well maybe next time....

  • T-wolves vs Suns game was fun

by rodeshow on 2010-04-12Target Center - MinneapolisRating: 3 out of 5

The Hardwood Classic Pack is a good value. A decent ticket along with a free t-shirt. It's too bad that the T-wolves don't have a marquee player but the game was still pretty good. Always enjoy watching Steve Nash play in town.

  • Suns to the Max
