Monsters of Folk worthy of the name

by RainyCity on 2009-10-14Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

The show was worth every penny. The set, with encore, was about two and a half hours long, the band played their music as well as songs by Bright Eyes, M Ward, and My Morning Jacket. Ranged from one to five people on stage (some brilliant solo/duet songs).

Monsters of Folk, Monsters of Rock

Wow, what a concert. The band came on at 8:10 all dressed in suits and ties, then played for 2 1/2 hours. The crowd was awesome. A young crowd that seemed to hang on every word and appreciate the fantastic musicianship. The band is incredibly tight, very professional but not in a slick, show biz way. The band members switch instruments, playing bass, piano, etc. Their voices blend perfectly. Prior to the concert I didn't know M.Ward. He was dressed in a light suit with shirt collar and tie, looking like he just left his saloon, circa 1894. I was very impressed with his guitar pickin'. Conor Oberst, Jim James and M.Ward all played their solo material. Conor Oberst played some of his slower ballads with the crowd hanging on every word. I was very excited to finally get to see Jim James in concert and he played some My Morning Jacket numbers. The MMJ numbers gave me chills. It was so exciting. This band can really rock. I did not catch the drummer's name when Jim James introduced him. He was a crucial part of this 5 piece band. The time on the ticket stub said 8pm, so be there on time. It means that is showtime with this band. Be prepared to be taken on a ride that will leave you spent. The band did one encore and to be honest, even though I cheered to show my appreciation for a great effort on the band's part, I couldn't have handled another encore as the band left me exhausted. A lot of thought had been put into this set as it let you catch your breath just when you needed to. Conor Oberst mentioned that when they were planning the tour they were asked if they wanted to do an intermission. The band decided not to. It is one of those decisions that, in my opinion, show that the instincts of the musicians were right on. Each of the band members still get a rest with this arrangement. The evening had the feel of a real rock event. It was one of those shows that I'll look back on and say "I'm so glad we went. They were better than I imagined they would be." As far as merch went, there were some limited edition (213) posters made by a local artist using different coloured card stock. They had two styles of t shirts, a hoodie and solo cds and lps. At this show they did not have any MOF cds. The sound quality was awesome, no hissing, ringing, ear drum bursting or anything like that. If you love live shows and you're on the fence about seeing these guys please do yourself a favour and go and see them. I would be kicking myself hard if I had missed this show.
