    Great opera voices

by Opera fan on 2023-06-20National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The NAC orchestra performed well and the voices of the performers were excellent however this could have been more accurately advertised as "Sounds of the Opera".

    Brilliant Performance

by Hugo on 2023-06-20National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The NACO together with a superb cast and a chorus made up of Ottawa’s excellent Ewashko Singers performed a truly excellent version of Mozart’s black comedic opera, Don Giovanni. What was so impressive were not only the flawless performances by everyone of the opera’s lead characters but the perfect synchronization of the orchestra (conducted by Alexander Shelley) with the libretto - the NACO has only recently performed operas (we saw the NAC production of Mozart’s Figaro a couple of years ago - equally impressive). As well, the opera was performed with very little staging - only very minor props were used. Thus, the strength of the orchestra and the singing really had to carry the entire production. I’ve seen worse at the COC with full production! Ottawa clearly loves opera - the show’s 3 night run was sold out @ over 1800 per night). I can only hope the NAC continues to revive opera in Ottawa - who knows, with the recent addition of an Indigenous theatre, perhaps a new national company is ready to be mounted. Bring it on!!

    Wonderful Experience

by Monica on 2023-06-20National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It was a modern take on a classic opera and it worked well. Fabulous music and singing, as well as great acting. The performers played their part extremely well and were so entertaining. Please, let's have more opera performances in the future.

    Wow. Just Wow.

by Laura on 2023-06-20National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It was a spectacular performance. The soloists were incredible, the orchestra, magnificent (as usual). I loved the humour as well. There were hilarious anachronisms throughout the show with characters using cell phones and social media chats on the surtitles board. We thoroughly enjoyed the show and look forward to more like this in the future.

The Opera was amazing, creative, colourful and beautiful.

by Bellerose on 2023-06-20National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The performance of all the artists was beyond expectation. I loved the humoristic novelties added to the opera, such as using the cellphone to call 911, an iPad to show the list of women conquered by Don Jovani and the texting part between donna Elvira and Luparello was really funny. I like the way the subtitle was shown on the screens in both English and French. The voices of the main characters were amazing, especially soprano (Donna Anna) Jane Archibald, and Baritone (Luparello) Justin Welsh. Baritone (Don Giovanni) Eliote Madore performed with excellence this extremely difficult role, he has an amazing voice, however, there were some moments, where he needed to sing a bit louder and with more confidence so that we can enjoy hearing his beautiful voice better. Thank you very much director, conductor, musicians, chorists, soloists, baritones, and all artists, you filled our evening with joy. My husband was very happy with my gift (this opera) for him on his birthday :) May God Bless you all.

    A fragmentary experience

by Michael Johnson on 2023-06-20National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

To begin with I was annoyed that there were no printed programs (or even cast lists) available. One could only get info by downloading a QR code on a device (I am not in the habit of carrying a device at all times and feel sorry for people who do). The performance had its good aspects of the performance: a strong cast overall, even with last-minute casting. Good conducting and clever, amusing stage direction. BUT: the work was severely truncated with about 40 minutes of music cut, including both arias for the tenor. The program notes made no mention or explanation of this. Opera is in a sorry state in Ottawa and this did not help.

    Excellent performance

by Jorge on 2023-06-20National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Great show, amazing performance by the orchstra and then singers. Weird it wasnt the full staging/scenography, sad because it was so close to the full staging as the singers were already in their costumes and acting.

    Amazing! Our first Opera!

by C. T. on 2023-06-19National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The opera singers & orchestra were amazing! What an incredible performance. Loved it all. And was thrilled to see so many young people at the Opera! Left the NAC feeling exhilarated!

    Don Gee-ovanni

by r. d. on 2023-06-18National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Interesting, great vocalists, the orchestra was typically professional and played beautifully, the mandolin or whatever it was, was a nice touch. I thought the biggest downfall of the production was the approach to staging the opera. The use of cellphones, a gurney, came of as being gags. Having the protagonist borrow the conductors baton was particularly cheesy. The quality of the protagonists acting was good but his voice lacked the power of the other soloists and a technical solution could have been used to better balance the voices. The chorus/stage hands were uncomfortable with their roles and too much was expected of them. They are singers and members of choirs, not actors and it could have been used more effectively had their role better suited their strengths. The way they were used was a distraction and detracted from the over all quality of the performance. Probably a more traditional and theatrical approach taking advantage of and focusing on the professionalism of the orchestra, the soloists and the music would have been a better idea. Contemporisation of traditional art form is tricky, and I'm sorry to say although there were several funny bits, I found this performance to be more of a curiousity than a satisfying experience.
