    Excellent overall performance

by BeethovenFan18 on 2012-01-13National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The music was wonderful. The musicians were amazing too. Had never heard Bruch's Scottish Fantasy before, but enjoyed it. Beethoven's 6th and the Unfinished Symphony were as good as ever, although Beethoven's 6th was a drop faster than I like it. Very frustrated by (a) cellphone ringing audibly during performance (b) baby crying during performance (c) kids talking loudly throughout Beethoven's 6th.

    Most Excellent Experience!

by Bug12 on 2011-12-19National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Andrew Craig is a very talented musician, conductor and host. The guest soloists sang with passion. The NAC orchestra and band proved a compatibility that sounded remarkable. Such wonderful talent sharing their gift of music.

    Not Gospel

by Sondheim on 2011-12-18National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

My wife and I were sorely disappointed. We expected gospel singing of the Mahalia Jackson variety. Instead we got rock inflected, brass dominated, string soothed walls of sound. To our ears the evident talents of the participants were entirely wasted in an effort to be BIG.

    Handel's Messiah

by Nataly on 2011-12-17National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I enjoyed the music very much. The choir was great together and the conductor was very good on the piano and very enthusiastic. The solos were okay but the best one was the young man, his voice was perfect. Overall, good but the ending could have been stronger. Maybe they should have left the song 'hallelujah' til the end since it was so powerful and got everyone excited.

Piano portion is pretty exciting and fresh. The symphony on other hand was rather um...boring, also found conductor to be too animated

Great performance! I loved the whole event. The violin solo was just incredible! I attended with my teenagers and they also had a good time.

    Lovely evening

by DancerInMyDreams on 2011-10-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

A great mix... something old and wonderful (Beethoven), something new and pleasant (Vaughan Williams) and something a bit challenging but well presented (Thomas Adès). Must go to the symphony more often.

    Impressive

by ludwig on 2011-10-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

We went to this event on the anniversary of our marriage. I have been through so many times Beethoven's fifth symphony and I will say bravo to NAC orchestra. The conductor was full of fun in the performance. Well done!

Absolutely the best concert I've ever been to!!!

by OperaChic on 2011-10-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I am a regular at the NAC for both NACO and Opera Lyra productions. This was the BEST performance I have ever seen NACO give. Ever. My conclusion is that Hanna Lintu is an absolute genius. I've never smiled so much in a concert which means that what was happening onstage was right. It was just so right. I didn't sleep for hours after this concert from the excitement that I felt. I can't stop talking about this concert - other music students that I went with are all raving and the ones that missed it are very disappointed that they weren't able to attend. To the NAC: Please bring Hanna Lintu back ASAP.

One of the best Beethoven's 9th

by Hugh on 2011-06-13National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Contrary to the G&M's review I thought Zukerman was well in control of the orchestra and created the intensity that Beethoven's 9th really requires. This evening represented that wonderful coincidence of both orchestra and the choral ensemble being in fine form. The result, I thought, was electrifying - and so did the rest of the audience that spontaneously rose to its feet in applause as the last note died. Less satisfying, but nevertheless interesting and well worth the price of admission was Malcom Forsyth's commissioned work as a homage to Canada. I could have done with less of the Highway For Heroes and homage to veterans. In Flanders Field was, I think, sufficient and said it all for that theme.... Still, Forsyth has given us a major piece that will enter the NACO repertoire. The choral ensemble struggled with it from time to time - but overall, an excellent performance. I couldn't help but notice Amanda Forsyth wipe a tear as the audience acknowledged her father who was in the audience for this premiere performance.

The Malcolm Forsyth ditty was tedious and went nowhere. . .a waste of everyones time. The ninth was technically perfect but no passion save from the orchestra leaders enthusiasm and the choirs blatant talent. Zukerman looked scruffy and bored.

    Yang replaces Wang

by climber6 on 2011-05-29National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Both are brilliant young Asian pianists but illness caused the replacement of a highly anticipated concert by Wang with Yang. And while both will have international careers I had hoped to hear Wang. Will catch her in Santa Fe this August.

    Vivaldi's Four Seasons a joy!

by Frida on 2011-04-15National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The orchestra was in top form and the 4 guest violinists were stellar. I enjoyed the performance of all four. Pinchas outdid himself with his conducting. Vivaldi's Four Seasons is one of my favourite pieces and this performance of it did not disappoint.

The violin soloists for the first three seasons were lack luster. Jessica Linnebach made the performance. Would like to hear more from her.

    Needed more Ms. Hewitt.

by Aywaz on 2011-03-10National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Great performance, every time Ms. Hewitt is on the radio, I have to stop and just listen. I enjoyed the NAC orchestra and plan to see them again. Ms. Hewitt's performance was but a bit short in my view. This is the first of her recitals I have seen and I realise this is hard work, but maybe I can't get enough.
