New York Yankees History

Few teams in sports are as historic and beloved as the New York Yankees. Since their origins in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles and official transformation into the Yankees in 1913, they’ve built a legacy that spans generations, collecting unforgettable moments, legendary players, and 27 World Series titles along the way. The fiercest rivalry in baseball began when the Yankees acquired Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox in 1920. The team subsequently moved to "The House That Ruth Built" — the original Yankee Stadium — in 1923, after a decade in the Polo Grounds. In 1929, the Yankees were one of the first teams to place player numbers on the backs of uniforms, and in 1939, they were the first to retire a player's number following Lou Gehrig’s departure from the sport.

Throughout the 20th century, the Yankees defined baseball prestige, with stars like Ruth, Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, and Mickey Mantle becoming household names. The Yankees won back-to-back titles in 1977 and 1978, an era led by Reggie Jackson. Between 1996 and 2000, the Yankees earned four World Series titles in a chapter anchored by the rise of players Bernie Williams, Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter. The Yankees won their 20th American League East title in 2022 and appeared in the ALCS again in 2024. The Yankees faced off against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2024 World Series.

New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium

The most iconic team in Major League Baseball continues to thrill fans in The Bronx and around the globe. Home games at Yankee Stadium — which replaced the storied original in 2009 and seats 46,543 guests for baseball — are a one-of-a-kind experience. Game days at Yankee Stadium are steeped in tradition, including a singalong version of “New York, New York” and the seventh-inning stretch. Currently under the leadership of Aaron Boone — a third-generation player, second-generation manager, and Yankee legend in his own right — the Yankees have won a league-record 27 World Series titles (including in 2009, their first year in the new stadium), along with 41 American League pennants and 21 AL East championships.
