Stanley Cup Final History

Stanley Cup® History

The Stanley Cup® Final dates back to March 18, 1892, when Lord Kilcoursie of the Ottawa Rebels hockey club announced on Lord Stanley’s behalf that, “It would be a good thing if there were a challenge cup which should be held from year to year by the champion hockey team in the Dominion (of Canada).” Shortly thereafter, Lord Stanley purchased a silver cup measuring 7.5 inches in height and 11.5 inches in width. In 1893, the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association Hockey Club was awarded as the first champion of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada. Today, the Stanley Cup® is the most prestigious award in the NHL®. Over the history of the Cup, the Montreal Canadiens have won 24 times, the Toronto Maple Leafs 13 times, and the Detroit Red Wings 11 times.
