NIGHTWISH IN CONCERT:

When it comes to all-out symphonic metal spectacle, few bands hold a candle to the outsized pomp and showmanship of beloved Finnish rockers Nightwish. From the synchronized pyrotechnics and gigantic customized organ that dominate the band's stage show to the bludgeoning riffs and synth stabs that drive their music, Nightwish has all their bases covered to ensure fans are treated to a spine-tingling concert experience unlike any other. Acclaimed vocalist Floor Jansen joined the band in 2013 and her powerful vocals have become a highlight at their live shows, drawing fans out in droves for electric performances of favorites like "Amaranth" and "Nemo".

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Nightwish formed in Kitte, Finland in 1996 under the leadership of acclaimed singer-songwriter Tarja Turunen. The band's early releases established them as stars in their home country, but international superstardom eluded them until the '00s when albums like Century Child (2002) and Once (2004) made their way onto charts around the world. The band parted ways with Turunen in 2005 after releasing the live album and DVD End of an Era, but in 2007 they reemerged with a new lead singer -- Anette Olzon from Sweden. The band recorded two chart-topping albums with Olzon -- 2007's Dark Passion Play and 2011's Imaginaerum -- before her pregnancy led them to seek her replacement for the Imaginaerum World Tour. Floor Jansen was announced as Olzon's permanent replacement in 2013, and she quickly earned rave reviews with her impassioned performances on the road. With their 2015 album featuring Jansen already generating buzz, Nightwish have fans chomping at the bit to catch their fresher-than-ever live show in the flesh.

Had very high expectations and they were all exceeded!

by Odin on 2022-05-07History - Toronto

I’ve been to many live concerts (somewhere between 300 and 400). This show May have been the greatest live performance I’ve personally witnessed. Everyone on stage is happy to be there and enjoying performing as much as the crowd is enjoying their performance. Floor’s stage presence is undeniable and I think she melted my face off as she and the rest of the band crushed Seven Days to the Wolves. That is a performance moment in my memory that I will never forget. I have nothing negative to say except that it eventually had to come to an end. The History venue staff and security were all super friendly and professional as well.

    Mind blown

by Maestrometal on 2022-05-07History - Toronto

Beast in Black to start without the full band ignited the fire, on comes Nightwish who poured gasoline, and Floor just Dropped an A Bomb completely controlling the crowd, and owning everyone. Absolutely amazing performance. From all. The venue itself absolutely horrible. I will never buy tickets at History again (unless Nightwish or Beast in Black are there).

    Nightwish was amazing

by npeart on 2018-04-16Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

fortunate for me I only discovered them about a month before the show so i didnt have to wait to long to see them. Couldnt ask for a better venue to see them in terms of the music, even if it means sacrificing some of the flair of the show that Nightwish is known for. Each member was on their A game and were right into giving everyone in the audience a good show...particularly Floor Jansen who I will say is one of the best band fronters I've ever seen. Can't wait for more music and tours to come and I hope this isn't the only time i get to see them play live.

    Nightwish does it all

by Rimshot on 2018-04-10Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

The first thing I noticed was the crowd. The demographic was age 8 to 80. This generational diversity would be more common at a Paul McCarthney show or Sting or Elton John. But in Nightwishes case it isnt us old farts bringing our kids or Grandkids to relive our youth. Everyone there is a fan!!! How do you properly characterize a band that can sound like Dream Theater one moment and then The Rankin Family (Canadian reference) the next. Not to mention two singers who could sing the birchbark off a canoe. Floor Jansen is amoung the best voices in music today. The power of Ann Wilson and the technicallity of Sarah Brightman. Combined with Marco Hietala's voice they provide a very unique blend. Add Troy Donockley voice (mostly the more recent material) and you have a very unique vocal blend for the genre they represent. Speaking of Troy......What instrument cant he play. How many bands in this genre have songs that use 'Uilleann Pipes'. The driving force of the band are Kai Hahto (drums) and Emppu Vuorinen (guitar) and Marco Hietala (bass). Kai is filling in for Jukka Nevalainen who is on a sebatical from the band and its very interesting as a fan (and a drummer myself) to watch Kai. He plays Jukka's parts to perfection and on the songs he recorded for Endless Forms most Beautiful he shows a technical prowess on par with an Ian Paice or Mike Portnoy. Emppu (the only original member with Tuomas) is a treat to watch and his playing is remarkable. He provides so much of the power of a Nightwish song with subtly and taste is so many parts of the songs. He played the entire show with a smile on his face that was infectious. Marco is simply the best singing bass player in European Metal. Becuase of the focus of this tour you dont get to hear songs like The Islander or While Your Lips are still Red. Then there is Tuamas. The man who created Nightwish and is 'compositionally' the main contributor of the music. Techically as competant as Rick Wakeman but with the compositional skills of a Hans Zimmerman.. His brillance as a composer is one of the juxtapositions fo the 20 plus years the band has been around. They move easily between various forms or styles. Its hard to immagine the man who wrote 'The Greatest Show On Earth' also wrote 'Wish I had and Angel'. But that is the brilliance of Nightwish. OH and by the way there is no profanity when they speak to the audience. So bring your kids. They might think your cool They all looked like they were having the time of thier lives on stage and one can only hope there is another 'Decade' of NIghtwish in the future.

A good show but kind of short. There were no other acts (which was fine) and Nightwish was only on stage for less than 2.5 hours.

    Fantastic show

by MysteryRed on 2018-04-08Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

I was stoked to see this band, who I just discovered about 1 year ago. I was not disappointed. The show was fantastic. Excellent sound. The stage setup was great. My only critic would be that they need to be in a huge venue. They are loud and bombastic and entertaining, and should be seen by thousands more. I loved it.

Awesome show from a favorite band. Vocals were lost in the mix though as the kick drums overpowered everything

by Sangias on 2018-04-08Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

I have been a huge Nightwish fan for over 10 years, but I found their song list boring and a collection of their less inspired material. Even Ghost Love Score, my favorite song, sounded flat and dull.

Nightwish cannot be categorized as just a metal band, there's so much more! The lyrics, composition, incredible sound, and Floor's amazing voice, unforgettable. We were on the floor and enjoyed taking in this amazing group in a smaller venue.
