Short but Sweet Night with Norm
by GraceKelly on 2015-09-15River Rock Casino Resort - RichmondNorm Macdonald continues to be one of the funniest comics working today. He's articulate and sharp and it was an absolute pleasure to be in the presence of a comedian who doesn't patronize his audience, but actually credits them with a modicum of intelligence. His comedy was fresh and relevant, particularly his comments on Bill Cosby and hypocrisy, and given the current anti-religious Zeitgeist, his discussion on God was ballsy and spot on. It was amazing to watch a seasoned professional at work, keeping an entire auditorium on the edge of their seats, laughing and wondering if he'd ever light that damn cigarette. We've loved Norm since his days on SNL and this Saturday's set proved why he was one of Letterman's last guests. (Do yourself a favour and find an old bit of Norm playing Scrabble with an old man at a Canadian B&B. Years later, I'm still chuckling.) Now if you're wondering how I can be so effusive, yet only award 4 stars, the problem was the length of Norm's set. We thought he'd perform for about 90 minutes and by our watches, it was more like 70, at best. His opening act was also pretty weak. He did have one good joke about "booze" but the rest of his material was pretty facile. Granted, warming up a crowd is a tough job, and though (his name escapes me) was endearing at times, his set just lacked the sophistication you'd expect from someone opening for Norm. I would, however, like to make a comment to the overly Botoxed sexagenarian who left her seat three times during Norm's brilliant set. If you don't have the bladder control to sit for more than 15 minutes and you're too proud for Depends, don't sit in the flippin' front row!
