Short but Sweet Night with Norm

by GraceKelly on 2015-09-15River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

Norm Macdonald continues to be one of the funniest comics working today. He's articulate and sharp and it was an absolute pleasure to be in the presence of a comedian who doesn't patronize his audience, but actually credits them with a modicum of intelligence. His comedy was fresh and relevant, particularly his comments on Bill Cosby and hypocrisy, and given the current anti-religious Zeitgeist, his discussion on God was ballsy and spot on. It was amazing to watch a seasoned professional at work, keeping an entire auditorium on the edge of their seats, laughing and wondering if he'd ever light that damn cigarette. We've loved Norm since his days on SNL and this Saturday's set proved why he was one of Letterman's last guests. (Do yourself a favour and find an old bit of Norm playing Scrabble with an old man at a Canadian B&B. Years later, I'm still chuckling.) Now if you're wondering how I can be so effusive, yet only award 4 stars, the problem was the length of Norm's set. We thought he'd perform for about 90 minutes and by our watches, it was more like 70, at best. His opening act was also pretty weak. He did have one good joke about "booze" but the rest of his material was pretty facile. Granted, warming up a crowd is a tough job, and though (his name escapes me) was endearing at times, his set just lacked the sophistication you'd expect from someone opening for Norm. I would, however, like to make a comment to the overly Botoxed sexagenarian who left her seat three times during Norm's brilliant set. If you don't have the bladder control to sit for more than 15 minutes and you're too proud for Depends, don't sit in the flippin' front row!

    Norm delivers

by Boristhedog on 2015-09-15River Rock Casino Resort - Richmond

I saw Norm MacDonald in Ottawa back in 1990 - before he made it really big. In 2015 he still delivers. I laughed throughout the entire show. Poor Norm hasn't aged well - carrying an extra 50 lbs now. But his mind is still wacky and his stories are completely bizarre - yet absolutely hilarious. You can't help but worry about him given the tone of some of his stories. I hope he is just joking.

    random act of Norm

by stately62 on 2015-09-14Kelowna Community Theatre - Kelowna

A little saucy and a lot of heart. Norm is an old soul, young with a lot of experience. The audience could have picked his brain for longer as he seems like an old pal you can just chat with. He was exhausted. It is true he left us wanting more.

    Norm was terrible

by showgoe1234 on 2015-09-14Kelowna Community Theatre - Kelowna

For the first time, we actually left half way through it was so bad. Norm couldn't finish a thought and was very difficult to understand. During the first 10 minutes I was actually waiting for someone to come take him off stage for being inebriated. Very disappointed.

    Norm

by wazababy on 2015-02-03Hamilton Place Theatre - Hamilton

guy is a legend to Canadians. It was a privilege to have him standing there in Hamilton Place. A bit to out of it so his energy was low and his razor sharpness only popped out now and again which was not so great.

Came out guns blazing then he fell apart during the middle for a good hour. Finished off alright but was overall disappointment.

Awesome show. Not everyone will appreciate his delivery but if you enjoyed watching Norm MacDonald on Weekend Update you'll love his standup.

too long and too much repetative vulgar

by jkkk on 2014-11-12Burton Cummings Theatre - Winnipeg

First 75 minutes was good. Audience was going to the washroom or leaving at the 90 minute mark.

Norm was Norm, which is to say he was awesome. The Holy Atheist who opened was good as well. Fun time.

Norm was hilarious but the show was TOO SHORT!

by CatPhD on 2012-10-30Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

Norm was as cute and hilarious as ever but I was really disappointed that the show only lasted an hour (maybe even a couple of minutes less than an hour) after waiting until about 9:45 for him to appear on stage. For the money and the wait, I expected at least a 90-minute show. Boo to Norm for that!

Show started 80 minutes late - no explanation.

by 01Jakester on 2012-10-24QE Theatre, Exhibition Grounds - Toronto

I have better things to do than wait 80 minutes for a show - where there's a single microphone to setup. No explanation offered for why the 8pm show started at 9:20pm. Opening act Rebecca was vulgar. Norm is talented, even if he seems drunk. Funny, yes. But disappointing. Some of his sentences he would just stop talking. After Norm got word that his hour was up, he just stopped and the show was over.

    Norm: Master of Comedy

by MetallicaDan on 2012-10-22Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

There's something about Norm that just makes everything he says hilarious. It's just an awkward rambling but somehow not only does it work, it kills. His movie Dirty Work is still one of my favourite comedies and well worth checking out if you haven't. Check out his comedy specials too. His material was great, as usual. We laughed so much, it was physically painful by the time the show ended (which ended abruptly - I have no doubt he could have gone on for hours). Norm is a must see, and every time he'll be performing in Toronto, I'll be there. Opening act Rebecca Kohler did an amazing job too. She's funny, check her out.

Pros: Norm was very funny, the opening act Rebecca was good too. Nice venue, hors d'oeuvres served in lobby after doors opened. Cons: Doors opened at 8 PM, opening act came on at 9:20 PM. Some notice of the wait would have been nice.

So bad, that it was amazing

by BrutusBeefcake on 2012-10-21Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

Norm McDonald probably has the worst jokes of any comedian. In fact, if anyone else told his jokes, they would probably get booed off the stage. The funny thing is that when Norm tells them, they are hilarious. I have never laughed so hard in my life. Norm is the best.

    Norm MacDonald

by roskelbrit on 2012-10-21Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

I was happy with Norm, but the venue was poor. I will never go to another show at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. On line it said the show starts at 8pm. The doors didn't open until 8pm. One door for everyone to go in. Then we all had to jam into the lobby for 20 minutes until they openned the door to the theatre. Then the openning act didn't start until 9:20 pm. When you went in it was cold, they must of just turned on the heat. The line up for the washroom were crazy. My husband had never seen a line up like this before. Then the openning acted started and she was swearing and using very crude sexually content. I felt very bad for the family 3 rows in front of me because it did say on line that is was a all ages show and they had 3 kids with them. This was NOT A ALL AGES SHOW. I am so glad I didn't bring my daughter. I was thinking about it, but it was not a show for kids..I though Norm was good. Just if you see all ages. It is NOT.

    Norm is a legend!

by actionfnjackson on 2012-10-21Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

There were several moments where I actually couldn't breathe. The man is hilarious without even trying.
