About

Guitar Review calls Paco de Lucia "possibly the most advanced guitarist in any idiom." From his widely acclaimed world tours and movie soundtracks, he has become a living legend of the flamenco guitar & one of Spain's ranking musical ambassadors to the world. Heavyweights like Wynton Marsalis, John McLaughlin, & Chick Corea are some of his famous collaborators. His concerts are renowned for their awesome displays of musical virtuosity, raw vocalizing, and whirlwind dance. Paco de Lucia takes you on an adventure—from light to shade, from fury to reflection; its flamenco that speaks to the soul.

Great artists, awful excuse and spotlights

by Flamencolover on 2011-06-29Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Paco de Lucia is great! Too bad there was not a bis. Although the public was clapping for 2 minutes after the end, someone came to the stage and gave a nonsense excuse "Sorry, bis is against the rules, the band is playing for one hour and a half only". Well, I am sorry the producer of the show doesn't know that the bis is included in every show of the world. The band plays for 1:20, gets out of the stage, have a quick drink while listen to the applauses, and comes back for 5 minutes more. That is the rule! Or, at least, a few musicians come back. The venue (Sony Centre for the Performing Arts) allows people to enter and leave the show all the time. So people are constantly getting up, sitting down disturbing your view. The worst part was the flashlights. Employees who didn't have a clue of how to follow someone to their seats with the flashlights spotted the eyes of people already in their seats. Instead of lighting the floor, they lighted the faces of those already seated. That was absolutely annoying. Picture yourself seated in the dark of a theatre, enjoying great music, and suddenly, there is direct flash lights in your eyes!!! And that happened not one, not twice, not three times... it happened during the entire performance!!!! And when some people were trying to make videos and photos of the performance, the guy would throw the flash lights in the face of the photographer, instead of saying something! The most absurd: nobody said anything before the show that photo and video would be forbidden... The venue allows drinks in the seats, so I ended up smelling beer for 2 hours. It was really bad that they made an intermission between the first 20 minutes of the opening performance and the start of Paco's show.

    Paco de Lucia

by sckb on 2011-06-29Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Paco de Lucia was totally awesome himself. However, I wish he had played more solos. The opening act with Edmar ........ on the Colombian harp was also excellent. The only jarring note was the large number of audience members who insisted on taking flash photos & videos, despite the many signs in Sony Centre forbidding that, and despite the usher staff telling individual patrons to cease & desist. 6 patrons in my direct line of vision towards the stage (& I was in the 3rd row!) completely ignored instructions to cease taking photos/videos. This issue was not handled nearly well enough by the auditorium staff.

Flamenco Band, Dance and Vocals with Paco

by GussieII on 2011-06-29Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Our 18 year old daughter who has studied classical guitar for 8 years loved the performance. I wish the event had been sold as "Spanish Flamenco Band with Live Vocals, Dance and Paco de Lucia". I am not very knowledgable about guitar music, but I thought we would get to hear a master perform the different styles he has mastered, jazz and classical as well as authentic Spanish Flamenco It did not seem that the sound was well managed for this performance, even I detected some buzzing.

paco de lucia - short program & rude dismissal

by henry2henry on 2011-06-29Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

had we known that paco's show was to be a shortened version due to an opening act being added, we may have reconsidered. why was it not advertised that paco was not doing the full two hour concert? we have been coming to see paco de lucia every time he is in toronto and we were disappointed that his show was cut short, that he was not allowed to come out for an encore and that the person making the announcement that there would be no encore dismissed the audience in a very rude manner. Not good pr, Sony Centre.

    Unbelievable guitar, full force flamenco

by Anonymous on 2011-06-29Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Fantastic as you would expect from a world famous musician. And you got the singers and dance as well, making it a great Flamenco experience. Opening act Edmar Castaneda was amazing, Columbian Harp - the rich sound - like guitar, drums, base and harp all together.

    Amazing Paco de Lucia

by boraboragirl on 2011-06-29Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

A great concert, enthusiastic crowd (not your typical subdued toronto crowd!). Superb musicians. The opening act (Edmar Castenada) was fantastic - good choice.

    Absolutely Amazing

by afficionado on 2011-06-29Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I had great expectations, and they were exceeded by much. From the opening act Edmar Castaneda's sublime Colombian harp, to the performance of Zyryab at the end, it was all fantastic. The show included great Flamenco dance and singing, and gave an audience as genuine an authentic Flamenco experience as possible to take on tour. At the same time, the multi-talented group of accompanying musicians managed to showcase the varied aspects of Paco's genius such as Flamenco inspired jazz, with spectacular success.
