The Opera House...one of my favorite venues and Peter Murphy, in my opinion, the best male vocalist ever come together. And on July 11th, which happened to be Peter's birthday, gave a very good show. Was it the best I have ever seen....no.
The new material seems to be a little bit mundane, and doesn't seem to make the best of Peter's vocal ability. Studio tracks might be different, but live, it tends to all blend together, but that might be partially blamed on the mix which seemed to drown out Peter's vocal's if he was doing anything less than really belting it out. That doesn't mean I didn't like it, and wasn't glad to hear new material, I just think that he should have maybe mixed it up a little bit. Thrown a few more of the classics in to the rotation to keep the crowd into things. Because during the first portion of the show, the crowd while appreciative, was a little bit subdued. It wasn't until Peter started playing older classics that the crowd got truly into things. It was great to hear these songs, and believe me I loved it, I missed however some of Peter's material from the Holy Smoke or Dust cds. Just to mix things up a bit.
One of the highlights for me personally was the inclusion of 'Heart of Gold' a Neil Young cover. Sure, he screwed up the lyrics royally...but it was still a cool little nod to Canada.
As it was Peter's birthday, there were a few gifts handed to him and he was very gracious, and took the time to reach out and shake hands with as many people as he could reach. He even pulled a very grateful boy onto the stage for a few moments. I envy that little boy!
It was fun to hear the lyrics of Bela Lugosi's Dead sung over the acoustic guitar chords of A Strange Kind of Love, and the dub section which featured a number of songs was brilliant.
I was a bit disappointed by the crowd who at times seemed more interested in having their own conversations than paying attention to Peter, and the opener, who I thought was truly boring and awful, was constantly wandering around trying to sell cds or something.
Overall it was a very enjoyable show that showed the wide scope of Peter's musical career, I wish that he had covered a little bit more of the older material, and that the opener hadn't have been an annoying douche, but I would give it an 8 out of 10.
