PETER MURPHY IN CONCERT:

Post-punk legend and godfather of goth Peter Murphy has been an emblem of dark romance ever since his debut with Bauhaus in 1978. As frontman of the legendary group Murphy made a name for himself with his spooky baritone voice and macabre theatrics, and he remains a spellbinding performer more than three decades later. Whether he's mesmerizing with Bauhaus classics like "God in an Alcove" and "Bela Lugosi's Dead" or treating fans to favorites from his solo career, Murphy never fails to bring chills on his unforgettable tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Peter Murphy got his start as a singer with Northampton, UK-based post-punk outfit Bauhaus, which he was asked to join in 1978 because the band liked his look. The group made their debut in 1979 with the single "Bela Lugosi's Dead", a nine-minute slice of dirge rock that stayed on the British independent charts for two years and served as the launching point for the goth rock movement. After a successful run that landed them four LPs on the UK Albums Chart, Bauhaus called it quits in 1983, allowing Murphy to pursue a variety of other projects. His biggest post-Bauhaus success came as a solo artist with '90s hits like "Cuts You Up" and "A Strange Kind of Love". In 20142 Murphy released his ninth studio album Lion to rave reviews, and he continues to treat fans to career-spanning sets on his legendary tours.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Murphy has not lost it one bit, his voice and stage presence is amazing as always and the decades of fans there enjoyed every minute."

"Another great show! Peter only gets better with age, played one of my favorite song from his solo career "A Strange Kind of Love".

"This was a great night for Bauhaus fans! So much music. He played for a very long time and looked and sounded great. I saw the last Bauhaus reunion show. . .this was just as good!"

    Peter Murphy - memorable show

by Detox on 2009-07-14The Opera House - Toronto

I have come out to many Peter Murphy shows since the early 90s. I've always loved his stage presence and powerful delivery in that deep baritone voice. This show was no different except this time there seemed to be a lighter side - almost a sliver of himself that I've never seen before. Peter joked around more so and seemed to be thoroughly enjoying himself on his birthday - I really liked seeing him cast this different light. The new material was great except his vocal was not up front in the mix - no fault of his - more of an issue with the sound I suspect. I really enjoyed myself and I look forward to hearing the new material when the album drops. The new songs felt like a stripped down revisiting of the past but with a new energy and vitality. Great show Peter - hope you come back to Toronto soon.

    Peter Murphy: The best voice...ever.

by MusicFanGG on 2009-07-13The Opera House - Toronto

The Opera House...one of my favorite venues and Peter Murphy, in my opinion, the best male vocalist ever come together. And on July 11th, which happened to be Peter's birthday, gave a very good show. Was it the best I have ever seen....no. The new material seems to be a little bit mundane, and doesn't seem to make the best of Peter's vocal ability. Studio tracks might be different, but live, it tends to all blend together, but that might be partially blamed on the mix which seemed to drown out Peter's vocal's if he was doing anything less than really belting it out. That doesn't mean I didn't like it, and wasn't glad to hear new material, I just think that he should have maybe mixed it up a little bit. Thrown a few more of the classics in to the rotation to keep the crowd into things. Because during the first portion of the show, the crowd while appreciative, was a little bit subdued. It wasn't until Peter started playing older classics that the crowd got truly into things. It was great to hear these songs, and believe me I loved it, I missed however some of Peter's material from the Holy Smoke or Dust cds. Just to mix things up a bit. One of the highlights for me personally was the inclusion of 'Heart of Gold' a Neil Young cover. Sure, he screwed up the lyrics royally...but it was still a cool little nod to Canada. As it was Peter's birthday, there were a few gifts handed to him and he was very gracious, and took the time to reach out and shake hands with as many people as he could reach. He even pulled a very grateful boy onto the stage for a few moments. I envy that little boy! It was fun to hear the lyrics of Bela Lugosi's Dead sung over the acoustic guitar chords of A Strange Kind of Love, and the dub section which featured a number of songs was brilliant. I was a bit disappointed by the crowd who at times seemed more interested in having their own conversations than paying attention to Peter, and the opener, who I thought was truly boring and awful, was constantly wandering around trying to sell cds or something. Overall it was a very enjoyable show that showed the wide scope of Peter's musical career, I wish that he had covered a little bit more of the older material, and that the opener hadn't have been an annoying douche, but I would give it an 8 out of 10.

    Peter Murphy is back!

by Tenpole on 2009-07-13The Opera House - Toronto

Last time through with Bauhaus Peter Murphy's performance seemed a little lacklustre. Not so tonight...he was on fire! He has re-affirmed his position as the best front man in the business!!

    Peter Murphy show was excellent

by mojave3 on 2009-07-13The Opera House - Toronto

The show was amazing. Peter put on an excellent set and I thorougly enjoyed the set. It was great hearing songs that have often not made it into his set in previous years. The band was fantastic. I got an excellent t-shirt at the merch table and snagged one of the 2 setlists which was awesome! Also shook his hand which was amazing! The only three things that kept me from giving this a 5 start review was an incredibly long wait time from entering the opera house to the time that Peter began his set, also thought the vocals were down in the mix at the start but this was rectified later in the set. The worst part of the show though was the incredibly horrible opening act. A true disappointment. Don't know what his name is but he is not a good singer, his songs all sound exactly the same one after the other and the girl he had playing single notes on the keyboard was useless. Peter Murphy rules!

    Peter Murphy Never Disappoints!

by StrawberryGirl on 2009-07-13The Opera House - Toronto

What can I say, outside of the fact, that perhaps outside of holding his hand, | maybe forgot about everything else. Okay, never mind, lets just talk about the fact that he sang Heart of Gold!! I am still trying to reconcile the fact that Peter Murphy sang a Neil Young song. I love Neil, so it's no disrespect, I just think it's crazy and spectacular at the same time!!

Peter Murphy at his absolute finest.

by PrettyH on 2009-07-12The Opera House - Toronto

I don't know what can be said about last night's show that would do it justice. Peter Murphy is an extraordinary man, who still has the same voice and stage presence with which we - the longtime fans - fell in love so many years ago. He covered so much of what people wanted to hear, added some new material, and thrilled us with covers of songs as varied as Neil Young's "Heart Of Gold," Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry," and an astonishing solo performance (nobody but him on that stage!) of David Bowie's "Space Oddity." His own classics each had a fresh spin on them, too. Any fan of Peter's would have to put this down on their list of Best Concerts Ever - the synergy between the man and the audience was incredible. The Opera House was electrified by him, and he responded by showing that he was just as enthusiastic about being in Toronto as we were to have him. I've seen 200+ concerts so far in my life. I know what makes a show unforgettable. Mr. Murphy hit every single requirement, and then some. For those who missed it, a word of advice: If we're lucky enough to have him return once more, do NOT let the chance to see him live pass you by again.

    Incredible man, incredible show!

by BBXBOY on 2009-07-12The Opera House - Toronto

The sound at The Opera House was loud but poor - Peter's vocals were lost in the mix. Doors opened at 8:30 but he didn't go on until 10:45 (long wait). But man did he ever put on a wicked show!
