    Iconic songs need great voices

by G.C. on 2023-09-04Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

Rock of Ages?, more like a high school musical (and not the Disney one) We were so excited to finally see this production, having never seen the movie or previous knowledge of the story, we took the plunge. Unfortunately the lead in the production we saw didn't quite have voice to pull off the iconic songs she was tasked to sing.

Star Dancers, Weak Female Lead in a Dollarama Wig

by Vivi on 2023-06-04Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

The dancers were the stars here. Sets and costumes, except for the female lead’s crooked dollar store wig were fine. The leads were the weakest part, especially the female lead. She missed being spot on with many of her musical entries and was often flat - she did not have nearly enough power for that vocal part. Or, perhaps it was the instrumental music that was overwhelming the lead singers, and the tech balance was way off. The male lead had some good moments and was much stronger than her, but I felt both were not strong enough to sing with the band. The support cast were amazing, except for the female actor who played the assistant turned protester. Her vocals were all muffled, spoken and sung, despite good stage presence. Overall, it just did not match the performance in Toronto around 15 years ago. I didn’t think about the show at all when I walked out the door so that tells me it did not resonate with me, and I am truly an 80s music fan. I loved the previous performance in Toronto, this one was a disappointment for my entertainment dollars.

Not as good as previous Rock of Ages

by Brianna on 2023-05-25Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

The previous Rock of Ages in Toronto was the best theatrical production I’ve experienced, and I’ve been to many. This one was a disappointment as the humour seemed to be directed at homosexuality, overkill. Not the case in the previous one. Why change something that was awesome.

    Energetic & Entertaining Journey

by Nessyj on 2023-05-24Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

This musical was applauded not just by myself who was transported back to my earlier days on this planet but also by my daughter who is a theatre graduate. The set ❤️ had perfect levels which were accompanied by the lighting and enhanced by the mainstream but yet effective sound track. Kudos to the musicians! The performances of the characters were on point and vocally overall pleasant with a few power houses. In my opinion, having non typical lead actors would have been a bit more interesting but overall I would recommend Rock of Ages to theatre fans.

    Fantastic!

by Deanne on 2023-05-24Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

Great venue, amazing performance and boy, can Trevor Coll sing! He’s very easy on the eyes too. I saw the performance a few years ago and it was just as amazing. Congratulations on a successful run.

    Fantastic final performance for Toronto

by Col on 2023-05-23Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

If I could give a higher star rating than 5, hands down I would. From the very beginning to the end, this cast delived a stellar performance. The music director & musicians were amazing and brought the show to life. We had the Director in the audience and you could see how extremely proud he was. This show was fantastic.

    Lame

by Beefy on 2023-05-23Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

This should have been called Boomer The Musical because its literally every terrible rock song ever made. Corny as hell as well. If you are old you will love it.

    Completely Missed the Mark

by Di on 2023-05-23Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

I went to Rock of Ages maybe 10 years ago, both in Toronto and on Broadway. Those shows were absolutely amazing! A real band played, and it was all about the music, and it carried the story of Love and trying to make it in the world of music and good old Rock and Roll. We took our uoung son to the show in NYC and he loved it! When I saw that the show was back in TO and as my young daughter loves Rock n Roll and has been on stage doing musicals since she was 4, i decided to take her. Well, to make it short, this new performance of Rock of Ages was awful. It had nothing to do about Rock n Roll, i only heard one of the actors belt out a few lines of a song for mere seconds. It was a trashy, trying hard to promote every agenda out there display of nothing but sexual inuendos and more trash. I was horrified and horrified that I exposed my young daughter to that. I am not sure what point they were trying to make. But it certainly wasn't about the music or the lifestyle at the time. I wated a few hundred dollars on tickets and ruined my daughter's special night out. We had to leave in the middle of the first half. I am sorry that she had to see what she had to see. It wasn't funny, it was disgusting and so abhorently trashy. It is sad that such an awesome story and past show has had to take such an awful turn to be turned into that horrid display. It was so bad.
