The stage was set for a great festival weekend. The weather was perfect. Maybe on the hot side for some, but a huge improvement over last year's pouring rain and lightning storms.
Getting to the venue was easy, and even General Admission (non-VIP) parking was readily available close to the field.
The line-up to get in was a whole different story. I've been to many concerts, and several festivals. This was some of the poorest organization I've seen. With extensive bag checks for everyone, the line was extremely slow moving. Showing up as gates opened at 1, I didn't expect to get in quickly, but 1 hr 20 min to get in is obscene. Several friends told me they waited even longer. For the expected turnout, 4 entrances/security personnel was NOT sufficient. The majority of people missed seeing the first band.
I got in with time to make my way to the front for Jimmy Eat World. The sound cut out several times during a song, which certainly put a bad taste in my mouth for the quality and professionalism to come for the rest of the show. This should just not happen. But the band laughed it off, and overall they played a great set, including a cover of Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Getting Back Together", and closing with their most famous song, "In the Middle".
I used the break to take in some of the vendors. Some great variety and more reasonable prices than I expected for a music festival. Lots of room and picnic tables, very comfortable.
54-40 took the stage, and they were my highlight of the night. Playing hit after hit, most of which the whole crowd new and sang along to. I heard from many people who knew the songs, but never knew who the band was. The band really "rocked the shores" and got everyone pumped, even taking time to address the people STILL waiting outside the venue to get in!
The rest of the show was as expected. I'm not a follower of the remaining artists, but the entire show was well worth price of admission. A few technical challenges during Matt Good's set were enough to make Matt lash out on his Facebook page.
All-in-all, I may give Rock the Shores another shot next year if the lineup is good enough, but the organization NEEDS to get better. More gates, and possibly separate bags/no-bags lines sooner in the queue.
