While looking forward to this game with eager anticipation, expecting Canada to come out intense with their back to the wall to qualify for the World Cup they came out flat. Uruguay scores with in the first minute after running through the Canadian side like a hot knife through butter. Tackling a forgotten skill! At least they fought back to take a 10 point lead only to squander it as the half expired to be down going into the second. It appeared as though Canada wasn't ready for the start and then they let down their guard awaiting for the half time whistle to blow.
Uruguay were more intense throughout the game. Offensively they ran through Canada, hitting the Canadians at speed at all times and scoring three easy tries on the wing where Canada failed to defend. Canada lacked intensity, they didn't hit the loose at speed, they weren't aggressive on the counter rucks, they took too many needless penalties, their ball handling was less than suspect as they turned the ball over numerous times in good scoring position due to carelessness. Even at the end with time running down they showed no sense of urgency, walking to lineouts as time ticked away. Uruguay deserved the win and Canada needs to watch some old film ('87, '91, '95) to understand what intensity means and is needed to be successful on the world stage.
I find it hard to believe that our selection committee isn't finding the right mix of players. Rugby Canada is still way too political in the selection process and it appears it's more of who you know vs. ability. We need some journeymen, character and leadership. No one is stepping up!
