Shumka Dancers on Tour

Established in Edmonton, Alberta in 1959, the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers is Canada's only professional Ukrainian dance company. Shumka presents dance-theatre touring productions, as well as intimate concert repertoire across the country and around the world. Seen by millions on international television broadcasts, the company has presented command performances for Queens, Prime Ministers, and Presidents, and have performed alongside the likes of Andrea Bocelli, Julie Andrews and Ukrainian artists including Ruslana. Along with Alberta Ballet and Edmonton Opera, Shumka is honoured to be a resident company of the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.

More than 60 years of performance history has shaped Shumka's signature music and dance style. While maintaining deep respect for their heritage, Shumka continually challenges conventional boundaries to define the experience of Ukrainian dance in the context of today's society.

Shumka has self-presented nine cross-Canada tours, and toured China and Ukraine on two occasions. One of Shumka's biggest productions was its presentation of Shumka's Cinderella which premiered in 2000 and toured Canada, China and Ukraine. (Director: Gordon Gordey / Choreography: John Pichlyk, Viktor Lytvynov / Music: Yuri Shevchenko / Costume and Set Design: Maria Levytska)

In 2016, Shumka premiered Kobzar. Inspired by the words and works of eminent Ukrainian writer Taras Shevchenko, Kobzar uses folk and character dance to bring his poignant message to the stage. Basing its narrative on four 'pillars' of Shevchenko's thought - Destiny, Soul, Courage and Hope - Shumka explores the timelessness of his expression. Using his powerful words as the guiding principle, this work delves into the emotional struggle of many of the world's nations as they strive to break free from oppression and unite in hope to fulfill their destiny. (Director: John Pichlyk / Choreography: Viktor Lytvynov, John Pichlyk / Music: Yuri Shevchenko / Costume Design: Maria Levytska / Set Design/Projections: Valeriy Semenko)

Shumka premiered two new works in 2018. Ancestors & Elders is a collaborative piece created with numerous local Indigenous artists. The work explores the relationship between Ukraine's first settlers to Canada and the Indigenous peoples they encountered here. A critical and community success, Ancestors & Elders explores the power of tradition and truth. (Director: Joseph Hoffman & Barry Bilinsky / Choreography: Joseph Hoffman, Tasha Orysiuk, Paul Olijnyk, Adrian LaChance / Music: Anders Hunter, Carissa Klopoushak, Mike Romaniak; Costume Design: Megan Koshka / Set Design/Projections: Svitlana Kravchuk, Lana Whiskeyjack, Elijah Lindenberger)

Shumka premiered a documentary called Dancing on Eggshells: The Making of Ancestors & Elders in September of 2019. It is currently available on Telus On Demand. (Film Directors: Leslie Sereda & Steve Glassman.)

Mosquito's Wedding (All We Need Is Love) was inspired by a traditional Ukrainian folk song. This family-focused dance theatre production features insect characters from various "regions" of Ukraine. Along with a message of acceptance and diversity, Mosquito's Wedding set a new path in the area of production for the company with a Disney-esque look and feel. (Director: Leslie Sereda / Choreography: Leslie Sereda; Joseph Hoffman, Tasha Orysiuk, Paul Olijnyk / Music: Andriy Shoost / Costume Design: Anna Ipatieva / Set Design/Projections: Andrii Zliobin)

Shumka presents Shumka's Nutcracker annually in Edmonton and other Canadian centres. A lush production of Tchaikovsky's Christmas classic, this Nutcracker has Ukrainian themes, added musical elements and symbols. Each year, Shumka is joined on stage by guest artists including dancers from the National Opera of Ukraine and Virsky Ukrainian National Folkdance Ensemble. (Creative Producer: Michael H. Sulyma / Choreography: Viktor Lytvynov, John Pichlyk / Music: P.I. Tchaikovsky, Yuri Shevchenko / Costume and Set Design: Maria Levytska)

Shumka is currently creating a new work called Echoes of Hopak. The Hopak is the ultimate celebration of Ukrainian culture. It is not only the national dance of Ukraine but it also symbolizes the cultural pride of the Ukrainian diaspora. The dance we recognize today has evolved over hundreds of years from a participatory act of village entertainment to the presentational experience that is performed on stages around the world. In 2020 Shumka is celebrating its 60 Anniversary as a Canadian Dance institution. The company's choreographic journey over those years runs parallel with the evolution of Hopak. This piece will explore the historical journey of Hopak while also paying tribute to 60 years of Shumka's artistic journey.

Shumka is also creating a new suite of dances with the working title, Tradition in Motion. A regional dance spectacular that celebrates the intricate footwork and vibrant colours of our roots in Ukraine, this collage of traditional movement features the regions of Volyn, Pollisia, Podillia, Bukovyna, Zakarpattia and the Lemkivshchyna.

Part of Shumka's mandate is the creation of a centre of excellence in dance education to prepare the next generation of dancers in the art form. The Shumka School of Dance trains over 200 young dancers using North America's only syllabus for Ukrainian dance, in addition to contemporary movement and RAD ballet instruction.

Studia Shumka - a junior performing ensemble and bridging program between the School and the professional company - was established in the Fall of 2018.

Shumka also offers Ukrainian-dance and RAD-based fitness classes for seniors and adults including its popular Seniors Can Shumka and Silver Swans programs.

Shumka is based in the Shumka Dance Centre in downtown Edmonton. For more information, visit shumka.com or contact darka.tarnawsky@shumka.com.

They were good. A little disappointing. Would prefer more traditional dance. The Ballet content was too boring.

An amazing show!! The dancers are spectacular with lots of energy. The dances were very expressive and exciting with a mix of traditional and contemporary. The costumes were beautiful. Was slightly disappointed not to see the traditional costumes usually worn during the Hopak, but understandably this was a 50th anniversary special and it was spectacular regardless! I would see Shumka again any time they are in Southern Ontario!

Shumka was Great dancing, but not traditional

by Kazoo66 on 2012-02-21Hamilton Place Theatre - Hamilton

I was with a group of 18 and we were expecting traditional Ukrainian dancing. The first half, we were dissappointed with. The second half was very good. Did not want to see the lyrical part about the soldiers dying. We were among the younger ones there, our group ranged from 64-5. There were a lot of old Ukrainian people there that I am sure were expecting traditional Ukrainian dancing. Also, the theatre was not half full and they did not have no where near enough programs.

    Not Ukrainian

by GheyDanert on 2011-12-06SONY Centre - Toronto

Disappointing show. If they would just remove the word "Ukrainian" from their name, that would make me happier after viewing the performance. Should just be called "Shumka Dancers"; they are lost in their own brand of contemporary dance. Back in the good old days, I remember when there were men in the cast; this was a performance by boys. If Shumka didn't have its former heritage or surgically-precise marketing staff, the theatres would be empty. Not recommended for anyone looking for a Ukrainian dance performance.

Shumka is one of a kind!

by AShumkaFanForLife on 2011-12-01Northern Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton, Alberta

After reading all of these reviews, I don't get why people have such a problem with Shumka. If you didn't know anything about Shumka, you should have gone on their website to watch some of their dances before you went to their performance before complaining about their dance style. Or if you think Shumka has changed? Yes, maybe they have but is that a bad thing? That's what life is! Life changes and Shumka have done wonderful in their dances! So what they have added a more contemporary style to their dances? They keep the tradition and culture of Ukrainian dancing with them at all times! Shumka is a UKRAINIAN dance company therefore it is UKRAINIAN dancing. Shumka is amazing and they have such a unique style to them. Shumka provides Edmonton, Alberta and even Canada with something no other dance group can! WIth their troupe of more than 40 dancers, they are noting more than professional and wonderful dancers! The dancers have such talent that you can't even describe with words. It leaves you speechless. Even though their gala wasn't as full as I've seen in previous years, their performance was nothing short of amazing. Every year I look forward to see Shumka perform their 1 or 2 shows and it always is a new experience and a GREAT time! Shumka will always have a special place in my heart and I will continue to support them until I grow old.

    Shumka was disappointing

by Henley on 2011-11-28Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Friday night's performance, while showcasing wonderful talent, was essentially a ballet. Shumka only comes around every few years and the expectation is that one will see traditional Ukrainian dances with traditional Ukrainian music. There would be a few bars of traditional songs in each dance but the majority of the music was new. We watched ony two portions of dances that met our expectations. Shumka is a lively talented group but have been stilted by this new format.

    Unforgettable :)

by dancingprincess on 2011-11-28Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

This review is written by my 9 year old: This presentation was unforgettable because there were lots of performers trying their best to impress the audience. I liked all of the different kinds of dance that they showed us. I like how they put lots of effort into this. The traditional Ukrainian costumes were beautiful. The art in the background showed us every place where they went & there was lots of colourful details in these paintings. I think that the costumes were very well made, it really suits all of the performers. I liked how the performers danced it out & never stopped. This show is the best show I have ever been too! The show didn't stop there either as there were people dancing & singing long after the show finished outside :D

    Shumka without the Shum

by Zeiggen on 2011-11-28Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Way too modern for my liking. For a 50th anniversary they should had brought back some of the old classics. Modern take was nice, but was not what I was expecting.

    50th Celebration was disappointing!

by Yycpianogirl on 2011-10-09Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

I'll start by saying the dancers were very talented. But after spending almost $500 to bring my in-laws and children to see the exciting 50th anniversary celebration, I was extremely disappointed with the style of dancing and overall performance presentation. We have sent my in-laws to Shumka performances numerous times to great review. So we thought this year would be even better. When we received the notification for the pre-party we were very excited to come listen to the Ukrainian band, see the arts & crafts exhibits and enjoy some pyrogies and cake. We arrived at the 6:30 start time to find nothing happening. The Pyrogy Boyz truck was ready and great as usual, there were some tasty Crave cupcakes, but the band wasn't ready, there was only 1 small art display and about 15 minutes later they set up a table to decorate the traditional Ukranianian headbands. My daughter did have fun creating a headband and once the band started they were great, but there was definitely not enough to entertain for the 1 1/2 hours prior to the show. Nonetheless, we were very excited for the show to begin. It was a little disappointing to not have any announcements about the troup and their 50 year history but I have never attended a Jubilee Auditorium production that did not announce the timing of the intermission. People were not sure If the event was over or continuing as they had also not distributed very many programs when we were seated. As I mentioned the dancers are very talented but the style of dance was a disappointment to those expecting the traditional ukrainian dancing they have done in the past. There was more contemporary, ballet style dancing which was beautiful but not what we had come to see. Overall, I would have attended myself but not have wasted the tickets for my in-laws and children that were only interested in more traditional Ukrainian dancing. We won't attend next year.

    Wonderfully Uplifting

by Anonymous on 2011-10-05Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

I took my 85 year old Grandmother to see Shumka at 50, she is Ukrainian and for her to see traditional dance was an inspiration and reminder of the wonderful movement dance has. The dancers were great, the music uplifting and most memorable is the beautiful costumes, with the bright vibrant colours and flowing material. Well done! very entertaining and worth enjoying with family or friends!

    Ukrainian Shumka Dancers

by Irenca on 2011-10-04Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

The "production" was professional from start to finish. We chose first balcony front row seating - perfect for overall viewing. Our only complaint would be that the music was too loud - less volume would still have given the performance the same overall excellence.
