  • Great skaters, very disappointing event.

by El on 2024-01-16WinSport Event Centre - CalgaryRating: 2 out of 5

I’m a longtime figure skating super fan, and this was the worst event I have ever seen. Skaters were great and did their job, and not their fault, but the event was so disappointing. The arena is so small and still was less than half full. The lower bowl of the Saddledome was full at Canadians in 2000(?). Winsport was also freezing. Ice needs to be frozen, not the stands and the fans. Extremely poor promotion of this event by Calgary organizers and skate Canada. Felt so bad for the dedicated athletes who have trained so hard.

  • Wow!!

by Carol on 2024-01-16WinSport Event Centre - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

This event featured a great venue allowing a very close up view of the skaters. I loved every minute! It was very sad to see so many empty seats.

  • Best wishes to all athletes

Happy to have the Nationals in Calgary, despite the cold snap.

  • Great event!

by Lorraine on 2024-01-16WinSport Event Centre - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

The National Figure Skating Championships were a wonderful event in Calgary! Surprised by the number of empty seats. Maybe if the ticket prices where alittle lower and there was more effective publicity more people would have come out to see these great skaters.

  • It was a great event.

by Maggie on 2024-01-15WinSport Event Centre - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

It was a great event. Thanks to all the volunteers and people who made it happen on such a frigid weekend. The one thing that bothered me was that the announcer told you nothing about the skater and could have at least said who their coach was, music, etc. I had to buy the $10.00 Smart Bug (I think that is what it was called) to get the commentary, which was great, but since I had already paid money to see the event that was a bit annoying. Also, the scores on the screens at either end were WAY too small to read. But otherwise a great event.

  • Beautiful facility!

by Ruthie on 2024-01-15WinSport Event Centre - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

WinSport is a beautiful, well run complex, and a Calgary showplace! Even the food available was great! Well Done Calgary!

  • Something of a letdown

by Skatingfan on 2024-01-15WinSport Event Centre - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

The skaters were great, congratulations to you all, but the organization of the event left lots to be desired. There seemed to be very little organization right from ticket sales through to the end. I have been to many national and international events so can compare. At first it was even impossible to find out the times of the events, once there there was still not much, info, inc. no programs, no info sheets ,not even announcements to inform of coaches, choreography, music, etc. For those in the know there were the Skate Bugs, but they weren't advertised or explained very much. With them the commentators need to learn not to speak while the crowd is still cheering or if there is an announcement playing. Concession facility lacking in what it offered and a second or third could have been opened up when busier on Sat The whole event seemed to drag at half speed, long waits for scores and ice cleaning( is it really necessary to clean after only 3 skaters?) There seemed to have been very little publicity about it and combined with the weather made for very sparse attendance which would be an embarrassment if anyone outside Canada happened to see it.

  • Great time at the skating.

Easy to get great seats and a reasonable price. It was sad to see so many empty seats however. It was a super event.

  • WinSport Canadian Nationals

by Denise on 2024-01-14WinSport Event Centre - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

Wonderful venue and Garden cafe has lots of different choices. Compared to other venues when you are attending a weeklong event this is appreciated. Rink was cold but when it’s -45 out to be expected. Great event overall.

  • An Enjoyable Experience

by Eileen C on 2023-11-24UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Really enjoyed the skating. Easy to get to and park at the venue. Would appreciate the schedule to allow for a longer break between sessions as there is not enough time to go get a meal (there was only just over an hour and all restaurants were a 10-15 minute walk away - does not leave enough time). Nor are there any real dinner options at the event concession (only hot dogs and fries!).

  • Event Great, Venue?

by RM on 2023-11-03UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Typical skating event...some amazing skates, some heartbreak tragic skates, some forgettable skates. The venue, while a good size has a few drawbacks. The staging area for the judges and cameras seemed larger than usual and blocked the views from many seats which were still priced at a premium rate. The concession might be great for university students but is terrible for a general audience of mostly adults in their 40's and over. Better, healthier food choices for these kind of events would be greatly appreciated.

  • Skate Canada International 2023

by Ev on 2023-11-02UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

I love figure skating. I have been a fan for over 30 years. Skate Canada Inernational 2023 was a great event. I had great seats. I met some great figure skating fans! I love the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Arena. I attend another figure skating event in 2018 at this arena. It has great facilities. I hope Skate Canada International and Canadian National Championship comes back to Vancouver BC again in the near future.

  • Disappointing Skate Canada

by rugbyma on 2023-11-02UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - VancouverRating: 2 out of 5

Event was not well promoted and therefore poorly attended, yet all event ticket packages were supposedly sold out. Inexplicable, considering the number of empty seats on the last 2 days of competition. Food services were minimal and not particularly healthy. Prices were unseemly, e.g., $8.00 for a hot dog and $2.00 for a cup of hot water that wasn't even lukewarm.

  • Good to be back on ice

We throughly enjoyed every minute of the figure skating live.

  • Skate Canada International Venue Review

by Mitch on 2023-11-02UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - VancouverRating: 3 out of 5

It was unfortunate that the stands weren't full. A lot of empty seats. Ticket prices were too high. Free tickets should have been given to the local figure skating clubs for young skaters to be able to attend. Food and beverages were very expensive. The venue provided great seats from almost all locations but the graphics in the building are poor. Many people were sitting in the wrong seats or had problems figuring out where their section was. Skate Canada needs to invest in some better matting. The matts were mismatched and old looking. The flags that were hung in the Venue were all wrinkled, a little steam would have made a difference. This was an International Event, it wasn't presented as one.

  • Well run competition in not so great location

by Sk8ting fan on 2023-11-01UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Skate Canada always does a good job of putting on competitions. Although there weren't a lot of big name skaters this year it was still very entertaining and a lot of fun. The venue is always a disappointment and I'm not sure why they continue to use it. The food services were absolutely horrible, and it certainly doesn't show well to international audiences.

by GrandPrix 23 on 2023-11-01UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

All the skating events were excellent. The audio set to listen to commentary was an interesting new feature for $10. Venue: needs improvement The arena was WAY too cold and breezy, and not allowing outside drinks and food is a mistake as healthy food options and good tea lattes were not available.

  • Skate Canada International

by DD on 2023-11-01UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - VancouverRating: 3 out of 5

Great event, my less than stellar comments are in regards to the food services. On Friday, at the first intermission, they ran out of soup. The event ran all day Fri, Sat and one session on Sunday. As far as the venue, it is unfathomable that there is only one water fountain at Doug Mitchell arena, a sports arena. I asked a staff person to double check and they told me only the one water fountain available to the public. One should not have to be forced to purchase water for $5. Rogers Arena and BC Place have several water filling stations for patrons.

  • Fantastic event!

by Milla on 2023-11-01UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

For any avid watchers of figure skating, this is a must! Was our first time ever seeing a live figure skating event - it was incredible! Really fun choreographed finish and a wonderful gala overall. Excited to see their journey!

  • Fabulous skating…

by Jai on 2023-11-01UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

…I wish there would have been more star power, but nonetheless, the skating was fabulous. Specially enjoyed the flawless skating of the woman gold medalist, and to see 2 Canadian couples winning gold was heart warming. I was very surprised that the events were only half full?!…. Hence a lack of atmosphere for both skaters and the audience.
