Awesome! Spellbinding! Well done! Tragic in so many ways!

by Bill on 2023-01-24National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Could have heard a pin drop through the entire time. The tragedy of the collapse of the bridge and then the tragedy of the treatment of the people by the government afterwards. Being an engineer, I knew about the collapse, but the effects on the Mohawk community were not explained so much even in the 1970's. A true learning experience of Canadian history for all people.

by Melissa on 2023-01-24National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

This was so powerful. I actually wasn't fully aware of what I was signing up to see, and I left silent in contemplation. I highly recommend everyone see this

A piece of history that needs to be heard

by Courtney on 2023-01-24National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I had zero expectations for this event as I know absolutely nothing about contemporary dance and how it would work with more traditional indigenous styles. This show was as devastating as it was beautiful. I fought tears the entire time (and lost). An incredibly important story told in an unforgettable way. I would absolutely come see this again and bring more people.

    Deeply moving and inspiring

by BexLynn on 2023-01-23National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It was a beautiful display of culture and athleticism. The music was evocative and supported the visuals in a way that told a story that was heartbreaking and moving. It was emotion after emotion. Hope, fear, despair, joy, perseverance. There was some devastation that came as a surprise, even though it shouldn’t have but the ending was so bright and full of hope. I laughed, I cried(a lot) but I was beyond moved. A masterpiece.

    ok

by Pouya on 2023-01-23National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The show claims to use one of the strengths of the indigenous culture: storytelling. However, the main story is told through actual text on the screen and some outloud read text at the beginning and end of the program. The show itself does not contribute much to the storytelling. Too simplistic!

    Fabulous Dance interpretation

by Sl Roc on 2023-01-23National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

A beautiful, creative and moving modern dance interpretation telling the story of how the Mohawk community was impacted by the Quebec Bridge disaster where many Mohwak men from the community worked and were killed. I wasn't sure what to expect from this small native dance company but the choreography was brilliant - I have had seasons tickets to modern dance at the NAC for years. This performance was up there with the best.

    Loved It!

by Kathy C. on 2023-01-23National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The entire cast are quite talented. They worked so well with one another, like they were one person. Although it is based a tragic story, it must be told. The scenes were quite well represented so that you felt what the people were actually feeling. The music was emotional and the lighting was exceptional. I would highly recommend Sky Dancers.

    Emotional performance by graceful dancers.

by Dunja on 2023-01-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

This visually stunning performance was introduced by a welcoming and actually humourous reference by an Algonquin elder to the unceded territory upon which it was played. The dance was performed by elegant dancers and in particular an excellent hoop dancer who brought her craft into the tragedy of the bridge disaster followed, amazingly, by taking away the children of the bereaved mothers to "industrial schools" in order to supposedly support the widows. It was a exquisite mixture of acting, dancing and appropriate music to commemorate the tragic falling of the Quebec bridge in 1907 and the fallout for the community of Kahnawake.
