    Undiminished by time

by Lindteaters on 2009-07-17Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Though I initially went to the show with some trepidation regarding the Sonny Rollins' advanced years, I was extremely impressed by both his style and skill. His agility on the horn was almost beyond comprehension, with blazing fast lines interspersed with unforgettable melodies. His stage presence was immense, and he dominated the room without speaking a word to the audience for an hour an a half. My only complaints regarding this show were that the venue, though beautiful, is too cavernous to really enjoy the nuances of a Jazz titan like Sonny Rollins, and that he did seem to suffer somewhat in terms of air support (his double-time lines just needed more gas in the tank). Considering his years, it's a wonder that this was the only impactful issue. I can only hope to still be an active musician in my late 70's. Sonny Rollins has always been unforgettable. If he's back again next year, it would be foolish to miss the show.

    Sonny Rollins amazing sax

by jazzybee on 2009-07-17Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

The guy plays a mean sax and the jammin was great and I learned a lot. I admire Mr. Rollins' stamina in playing the whole concert without a break. That being said I would have liked a little more chit-chat/entertainment/introduction before songs or sets in order to connect with him a bit more and learn more about the music. I didn't know many of the names of the songs. I also would have liked to offer Mr Rollins a chair/stool so he could rest a bit when the others had long solos. I would have liked to learn a bit about the people behind the music.

    Sonny Rollins was amazing!

by nazzy on 2009-07-17Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

It was amazing that he was the only musician on the stage who stood all night - all other musicians, and all of them considerably younger, were seated!

by Dustin on 2009-07-16Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

It was the first time I saw jazz concert in Vancouver. Sonny was very energetic and enthusiastic saxophonist. I couldn't believe he was 78. It was good to see how an old man could have fun and do these amazing things!! The concert hall was full of ENERGY.

What were the tech guys smoking??

    by Kenny14 on 2009-07-16Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Sonny played great. Whose idea was it to keep the spotlight on Sonny the whole damn time even when other musicians were soloing in the dark??? Sonny's sound was way way to loud. He was playing with other people. Even my dead cat knows there needs to be somekind of balance.

An evening with a jazz great

    by tammy23 on 2009-07-16Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Sonny brought a talented bunch of musicians on tour to give a truly memorable performance. He had some amazing solos and always a striking presence on stage. The music in turns emphasized all of the different instruments and musicians present. The result was inspirational - there is no doubt of his talent as a musician and a performer. So glad I decided to go at the last minute!

    SONNY IS KING

by KingTee on 2009-07-16Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Great show, Sonny is old but still has it. It would have been nice to be a little closer but the show was still captivating. His band was also great I liked the trombone player the most. I would defiantly see another sonny show and the Orpheum is a great venue.

    Sonny Rollins

    by jazzfan1600 on 2009-07-16Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Definitely worth the ticket. It was a wonderful evening. But it was not Sonny at his best. The energy in the first half of the show seemed to get lower, lower and lower. It picked up again mid-way. The second half was fabulous.

One of jazz's 'last living greats'

by marykastlemusic on 2009-07-16Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

If I learned one thing at this year’s jazz festival, it was to have reverence for your instrument and the music your playing. Sonny Rollins... the announcer called him one of jazz’s ‘last living greats’. His career has spanned so many quintessential musical meetings it’s hard to imagine what’s going through his head when he’s playing. He sure looks like a hip cat onstage though, in his white blazer and black shades. What grabbed me about Rollins’ band was the incredible respect they all have for their instruments. It just oozed out of Sonny’s saxophone – the hours, years, he’s put into mastering his craft. He played every note with such a fierce conviction by the end of the show I almost felt like he’d told me his whole life story. I was definitely left with a new appreciation for how deep music can communicate without a single word being spoken. And when it’s done with such mastery, it’s like having story time with Jesus or something... The first time Sonny took the microphone to address us, it was two hours into the concert, and all he said was, “it’s been a pleasure to play for you Vancouver. May we say goodnight?

    Sonny the Sax Genius

    by HitmenFan71 on 2009-07-16Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Sonny Rollins was more than fantastic. His concert was one the the most memorable and best audio performance I have attended in my life. At 78, he's still plays with enthusiasm and power, it seems so effortless for him. He's the example why people should consider the sax as their instrument. Way to go Sonny ! Hope to see you again.
