Interesting WORKSHOP but NOT a finished show...

by TheatreDr on 2017-03-22Elgin Theatre - Toronto

There were some interesting moments, and some good performances (Clark is in superb voice throughout), but the show is a mess. Scenes in wrong order, characters introduced in bizarre ways (the girlfriend we meet on the phone for the first time!... and she invites herself over to her future boyfriend's house in a 2 minute scene-lette) They keep giving minor characters songs/too much stage time (Jenny, Mr Wyman - cut them both please), they have no idea what to do with Judy Kaye ("Let Go" should be her song that Victoria Clark joins at the end once she's LEARNED the lesson...) other than that she's there for no real reason - and needs one if you're going to keep her - her second act song... sung nicely but just a wast of time in a long show, cut it! Most of the songs are shockingly weak, and I'm a Maltby and Shire fan!("Rainbow Nation" - a generic anthem, "Inexpressible" a song that tells us over and over that somethings cannot be expressed?! "Mander's Salon" - cut it, and "All I Wanna Do (Is Go Dancin')" sigh, to start with in what nightclub is this set?) The main house has no consistency as a set... it has a staircase, it doesn't, there's projection, there isn't. Costumes are really good or bewilderingly ugly. Choreography often weak, And why is there a girl group/back-up singing trio in Naledi's house (Themba's mother's sister.) And finally the show "ends" for about 15 minutes with false ending after false ending. This show needs to focus on what it claims to be about (two women and the talented son/student they want control over and get rid of all the extra crap.) Back to the drawing board folks.

    A Work in Progress

by bdwyfan on 2017-03-22Elgin Theatre - Toronto

There are some fine moments in Sousatzka, most notably a couple of numbers sung by Victoria Clark, "This Boy" and "Let Go". Judy Kaye's talents are vastly underused. Montego Glover tries hard to meet the vocal demands that her voice falls slightly short of. I don't even remember the lead actor's name and can't be bothered to look it up because his performance is completely forgettable. This is a very uneven musical. It wouldn't last a week on Broadway. A complete overhaul is required. #SousatzkaMusical

    Loved the concept...but

by Anonymous on 2017-03-21Elgin Theatre - Toronto

This play is an hour too long .. some of the songs are 'hokey' such as when the boy sings to his father, all I could think about was the movie, Yentl (papa can you hear me?) ... and the Christmas song was so unnecessary .. also the fact that the son appears at the end .. hokey ... we all know she was raped, we all know she's Jewish .. too predictable... There was a scene when the husband sings with all the chorus around him and the sun in the background .. that should have been the finale song... I loved the concept of the comparison of Apartheid and the Holocaust .. unfortunately, the play missed the mark.

    Sooo Long Sousatzka!

by PDMG on 2017-03-20Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Once you finally work out what exactly is happening in the play, it takes quite a while finish up the story - then at the end there is another new element into the story line which seems a bit too far fetched. Also need to work out some of the technical elements of backdrop showing the movies - for a good part of the show the bottom left was showing a bright blue block of lights with flickering green lines while the balance of the screen was showing the movie aspect.

    Greatly Disappointing

by DonnaLeigh on 2017-03-06Elgin Theatre - Toronto

I was very much looking forward to this show but unfortunately I was greatly disappointed. The story came across as contrived and never achieved a natural flow to it. The emotion did not come across naturally, it seemed forced and the cast appeared to be "selling it" too much; I felt for them as they are a supremely talented ensemble. Much of the score and the lyrics came across as dated, I would describe the big numbers as calculated rather than authentic. The music as a whole came across as manufactured rather than created from passion. The show is long and many scenes laboured and felt mechanical. There just didn't appear to be anything that was effortless or have an ease to them. Hopefully with time this will change. It is a strong production and kudos to the set and wardrobe teams and the lead voices (especially Victoria Clark) are impressive. For me, the most important aspect of any performance is that it must move me emotionally and unfortunately, Sousatzka did not. I'm sorry to say it felt concocted and at times wooden and affected. I hope more performances help and changes can be made as this strength of cast deserves better.

    Stage was unforgettable

by jnkt on 2017-03-05Elgin Theatre - Toronto

The skretching noise each time casts moved or walked and props were being moved each scene was so bothersome. I am not sure if it is due to the theatre's age. I am hoping this will not happen in Broadway. This is why I cannot recommend this to friends .

    Sousatzka is breathtaking

    by Nickname389 on 2017-03-05Elgin Theatre - Toroonto

Saw Sousatzka a week ago and can’t stop thinking about it. It is absolutely absorbing from start to finish. Choreography, costumes, music and performances are spectacular and the staging is very inventive: really quite beautiful from start to finish. Sousatzka stays with you. While the big musical numbers are plentiful and transporting, the quieter moments are equally powerful. While the entire cast is just great, it is an enormous treat to see Victoria Clark, Montego Glover and Judy Kaye together and in an intimate theatre setting like The Elgin.

    Exceptional!!

by chickitanana on 2017-03-04Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Thoroughly enjoyed the entire performance from beginning to end. It just kept getting better and better for me. From the characters and their wonderful personalities and emotional depth, the scene setups with understated simplicity yet strongly conveying the mood, the costumes were great, very attractive and of the times. The story really touched me as I have strong feelings about apartheid, the holocaust, musicians, music, emotional damage and the resultant scars. I especially enjoyed the music. From the emotional piano pieces to the wonderful African sounds and even the punk. I would recommend this musical wholeheartedly. Happy that my seat was upgraded. Bonus!

    Hugely Disappointing

    by TheatreFan2016 on 2017-02-28Elgin Theatre - Toronto

This show needs a lot of work. It fails to generate any emotion and seems totally contrived. Why the decision was made to cast a non-piano playing actor in the role of a piano prodigy is beyond me. The change there alone would make a huge difference.to this show. I had so wanted to enjoy this musical. I had been looking forward to it for months. I was hugely disappointed. Hopefully improvements will be made before it heads out to Broadway or else I am worried that it will not last long on the Great White Way.

    Dark and intense musical

by beachbird on 2017-02-28Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Sousatzka was darker and more intense than I expected, but the music was good and some of the visuals were interesting and very effective. Fantastic performances by Victoria Clark, Montego Glover. There are scenes that some audience members might find disturbing... I noticed a few people near me left immediately after one of those scenes and did not return for the second half of the show (perhaps a trigger warning is in order?). If I had to suggest improvements, I would say that this show needs more comedic relief to lift the darkness. The music is good, but none of the songs really stay with you the way great musicals usually do.

    Good acting/singing. Needs editing.

    by Steve709 on 2017-02-28Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Performers did a first class job. Story line to me spends most of the time trying to find itself. Production was almost 3 hours with intermission. Needs some real editing and someone to take charge of the story line and define it. I don't think it will survive Broadway in its current form.

Sousatzka will fill you with emotion

by Anonymous on 2017-02-28Elgin Theatre - Toronto

You will laugh a little, cry a little and be drawn into the lives of some amazing people. Very thought provoking. A reminder that we must never forget our history if we want to avoid making the same mistakes. You marvel at people's resistance and ability to move forward.
