St. Germain: Fire the sound techs!
by Northquest on 2016-04-11St. Andrews Hall - DetroitI have to say I was looking forward to seeing this live show but was disappointed with the final product last night. I blame the sound techs more than the band itself. The low end of the sound spectrum was overshadowing the crisp sound of the instruments at times, some more than others. I could hardly hear the sax player, it was almost like he was miming the instrument. As well the musicians seemed to be flailing around playing little bits that got you excited that they were going to let loose at any moment but then the sound disappeared into obscurity. Too much repetitious beat going nowhere without definitive changes. I will say the percussionist was excellent without a doubt, and I believe they are all accomplished musicians but I did not see the cohesion, tight act, and overall gelling effect that these musicians should have had before they came out on stage. Lastly, it occurred to me that some music acts should stay in the studio where they can sound at their best. Too duplicate that live is not always so easy if you don't have stage presence along with the aforementioned accouterments. St. Germains studio work on his retail releases sound wonderful, and this is why I wanted to see them last night hoping for some vestige of the treat I get each time I listen to them at home. Alas, it was not to be. Maybe by the end of the tour they will get it together, hopefully. All in all, I had a great night out at St. Andrews and downtown Detroit with my friend but I can't say the night was memorable.
