About

Steve Miller has been an enlivening presence on the American music scene for more than half a century - and, in the course of that era, his releases have sold tens of millions of records and been streamed several billion times. Miller's Greatest Hits 1974-78 received the RIAA Diamond Award with sales of more than fifteen million copies. It is among the 25 best-selling albums of all time.

At the start of his career, Miller soon became a mainstay of the San Francisco music scene that upended American culture in the late '60s. With albums like Children of the Future, Sailor and Brave New World, Miller perfected a psychedelic blues sound that drew on the deepest sources of American roots music and simultaneously articulated a compelling vision of what music - and, indeed, society - could be in the years to come.

Then, in the '70s, Miller crafted a brand of pure pop that was smart, polished, exciting and irresistible - and that dominated radio in a way that few artists have ever managed. Hit followed hit in what seemed like an endless flow: "The Joker," "Take the Money and Run," "Rock'n Me," "Fly Like an Eagle," "Jet Airliner," "Jungle Love," "Swingtown" and "Abracadabra," among them. To this day, those songs are instantly recognizable when they crop up online or on the radio - and impossible not to sing along with. Their hooks are the very definition of indelible.

Running through Miller's distinctive catalog is a combination of virtuosity and song craft. And that's no accident. His parents were jazz aficionados - not to mention close friends of Les Paul and Mary Ford - so, as a budding guitarist, Miller absorbed valuable lessons from that musical tradition. When the family moved to Texas, Miller deepened his education in the blues, eventually relocating to Chicago, where he played with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy and Paul Butterfield. That range of sources informs his music to this day.

In recent years, Miller has fully immersed himself in the blues and its many byways. As he has always done, he continues to find creative outlets for the full panoply of his musical passions. On his successful tours with the Steve Miller Band, he complements the commercial peaks of his extensive catalogue with lesser-known songs that expand his fans' awareness of the range of his work. As a member of the Board of Directors at Jazz at Lincoln Center, he has curated and headlined a series of shows that explore themes like the bridge from blues to jazz in the music of guitar great T-Bone Walker; the distinctive sounds of the blues triangle of Memphis, Texas and Chicago; the resonances between the singular musical creations of Ma Rainey and Miles Davis; the deep American roots music of Appalachia; and Cannonball Adderley and the Blues. In addition, at the request of Wynton Marsalis, he is defining a blues pedagogy for Jazz at Lincoln Center. He is also a member of the visiting committee of the Department of Musical Instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Indeed, five of his guitars were displayed in "Play It Loud: The Instruments of Rock and Roll," a groundbreaking exhibition at the Met that ran for six months in 2019. Miller was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 and has been elected for induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022. He has recently begun to open his vaults for the first time, releasing the acclaimed Welcome to the Vault box set in 2019 and Breaking Ground Live! August 3, 1977 in 2021.

With each listen the beauty and immediacy of Miller's work, whether at its most playful or most serious, is palpable. As always, whether he was riding the top of the charts or traveling the endless blue highways of American music, you can hear him playing and singing with conviction and precision, passion and eloquence, making music that is at once immediately accessible, thrillingly alive in the present, respectful of the past, and more than able to stand the test of time. - Anthony DeCurtis

Beautiful venue, and amazing show! These guys can definitely still rock! Steve Miller is a class act, a great storyteller who interacts with the crowd. The sound was great, and I was pleased that he didn’t stray from the greatest hits. He played all of the songs you would want to hear. Very enjoyable evening. Thank you, Steve Miller.

    Phenomenal!

    by BLT on 2023-07-11

Steve Miller is an outstanding, incredible performer and the concert was phenomenal. Very nice, state of the art venue with comfortable seats. The only issue was the drunken, unruly fans who had no consideration for others.

    Disappointing Concert

by CandyD on 2018-08-30Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - Woodinville

Both groups talked far too much. It was raining and cold, we wanted to hear their big hits not stories about guitars.

    A rare rainy concert

by Anonymous on 2018-08-29Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - Woodinville

I enjoyed the music and musicians, but both groups would talk about trivial, non interesting things for 10 minutes or more between tunes while we stood around all soaking wet. At least when they played we could forget about the rain for a bit, but alas, they spent more time talking than they did playing. There must have been at least 200 other guests shouting to play, but they either didn't hear us or didn't care. 1st I'd ever experienced.

Steve Miller, not worth the money

by Tmegm on 2018-08-29Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - Woodinville

We were very disappointed in this concert as Steve Miller did far too much talking and not enough playing! We were excited to be going but did not feel we got our moneys worth at all.

    Great Concert!!!

by TheHipfan on 2018-07-10Darling's Waterfront Pavilion - Bangor

My wife and I truly enjoyed Frampton and Miller. They played all their hits and more. Enjoyed their story telling as well. They both still have their vocals ... was as if we were seeing them 30 years ago. Both play the guitar exceptionally. Want to see them again.

    Blues with Frampton and Miller

by Elliegirl on 2018-07-08Darling's Waterfront Pavilion - Bangor

Concert was great, venue was good even though it's outside. A little tropical with the heat wave but certainly worth the trip. Everything was well done. Happy we went. The was a bucket list concert.

    Not impressed

by TishaC on 2018-07-08Darling's Waterfront Pavilion - Bangor

Have been to many shows at this venue but have never been to one where entire audience at one point, was seated due to lack of enthusiasm. Show was slow to gain momentum. Too much talking by performers, also played Tennessee Blues tunes that were not their own. Came to hear SMB, not the alternative. Towards the end of the show they redeemed themselves and played what everyone came to hear but for me it was too little too late.

    Very disappointing

by Logic on 2018-04-30SaskTel Centre - Saskatoon

Some good moments and memories but adding prolonged instrumental solos to every song was a huge turn off. At this point in their careers neither artist needs to prove they can play a guitar. In a full arena setting large screens are expected. Way too long, a sad evening out.

Frampton should have been the Headliner

by BigBri on 2018-04-29Bell MTS Place (Formerly MTS Centre) - Winnipeg

Steve Miller was ho hum at best. Peter Frampton should have been the headliner and played more od his early hits with more singing and less instrumentals. Tough seeing on floor seat when people standing up in front of you. Perhaps a higher stage would help.

    Even better than I expected!

by OzzyRules on 2018-04-29Rogers Place - Edmonton

First off, Peter Frampton was awesome! He did all his hits with some nice back story about them. He did a nice tribute too. Next, Steve Miller band of coarse was another kind of greatness. Again, they did all of their hits. About 4 songs in he brought Frampton back out and they did a nice old blues medley. Fantastic show all the way through.

Remembering the Great Tunes from the 70's

by stash on 2018-04-28Bell MTS Place (Formerly MTS Centre) - Winnipeg

What a fun night, I have always been a Frampton fan, so it was great to see him rock that guitar. What a great group of musicians he has playing with him. Really enjoyed their set. Steve Miller band brought back lots of fun memories and good time from back in the day... the band was great, loved the keyboards. It was great to see Steve and Peter jam together.

Peter Frampton was the highlight for me

by LinaBurt on 2018-04-28Bell MTS Place (Formerly MTS Centre) - Winnipeg

Peter Frampton was amazing. He can still rock like the old days. At 68 years old his voice is still as good as it gets and they way he shreds on the guitar is crazy good. The only thing I wish he would of sang a little more in between his instrumentals. As for Steve Miller Band. I wish he would of played more of his original hits. He still sounds great and also can play guitar like crazy. Over all a awesome concert and was a great evening of music.
