About

STEVEN WILSON IN CONCERT:

From his days fronting beloved groups like Porcupine Tree and No-Man to his acclaimed recent solo work, prog rock veteran Steven Wilson has been a beacon of experimentation and innovation in British music. Wilson's extremely diverse musical past is ever-present on his fourth solo effort, 2015's Hand. Cannot. Erase., an ambitious concept album that features a staggering range of musical styles, instruments, and affects. The through line of both the album and Wilson's marathon live shows is his technical virtuosity and willingness to take risks, a quality that makes his epic performances supremely exciting affairs. From jaw-dropping solos and extended breakdowns to Wilson's signature barefooted stage moves, ticket buyers can expect an electrifying and unforgettable concert experience.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born and raised in suburban London, Steven Wilson traces his love of music back to the first LPs he received as a Christmas gift from his parents -- Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon and Donna Summer's Love to Love You Baby. By 11 he was playing the guitar and experimenting with a multi-track tape machine and a vocoder built by his electronic engineer father. Wilson played in various prog and experimental groups during his teens, and in 1986 he started the two projects that would define his early success: No-Man, a rock and synthpop outfit and Porcupine Tree, an experimental psychedelic rock band. By 1990 No-Man was generating major buzz, landing several singles on Melody Maker's coveted Single of the Week list including a cover of Donovan's "Colours". At the same time, Wilson's more experimental work with Porcupine Tree was also gaining underground success with a series of extremely limited releases that remain coveted cult classics today. Wilson began releasing solo material in 2003, starting with a series of cover albums before releasing his official solo debut album Insurgentes in 2008. Since then he has released three more albums including 2015's highly anticipated Hand. Cannot. Erase, a critically acclaimed album collection that fans are eager to see performed live.

    Multi-media genre defying rock

by nordist on 2015-06-30The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

When you listen to a Steven Wilson album or see one of his shows you get that he pays attention to every aspect of his art. From the images projected, the lighting, the sound, the musicianship, it comes together as one to give an experience that will be unforgettable. The live experience of a Steven Wilson flows from mood to mood, from soft to hard, fast to slow, loud to quiet and any mixture of these. His band is comprised of incredibly talented musicians. The keyboard player (Adam Holtzman) in particular added a jazzy element to the some songs and his solos were a highlight. Steven talked quite a bit during the early part of the show with his self deprecating humour. To classify his music as progressive rock is perhaps the best label for it, but the music is truly genre defying. The 2 1/2 hour show flew by and left the audience at a standing ovation wanting more.

    Miserable music makes us happy!!!

by Pachecutek on 2015-06-30Métropolis - Montreal

One of the most incredible moments of the current jazz festival. Richness in visual content which linked perfectly with the song history and the band performance. Steven wilson gives us this miserable music which actually, makes us to figure out that life is not so awful. SW has showed his new signature guitar which is acoustic; he talked about the learning process of playing guitar in which playing acoustic guitar was essential to create emotional music. In these days, teenage YouTubers are looking for speed but some of them are lacking emotion. The "Rave that refused to sing" was the last song of the night. Dave Kilminster and Craig Blundell were excellent for hte entire concept. The Aristocrats (MArco and Guthrie) are coming to Montreal the next month anyway...

    Prog/Rock spectacular

by raunch on 2015-06-29The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Having just recently become familiar with Wilson's work (solo stuff and Porcupine Tree), I was not sure what to expect from his live show. Wow! The acoustics were superb and his band were amazing! The show borrowed mostly from Wilson's most recent album (Hand. Cannot. Erase) and the live renderings of the compositions were faultless. Images on a giant screen were synced-up with the live playing for an all-encompassing experience. Two and a half hours just flew by. Brilliant!

    Steven Wilson was fantastic

by Pasubio79 on 2015-06-29The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

First time at one of his shows, so I did not know what to expect. Enjoy his music immensely, however the dynamics and sense of his music is increased greatly in a live setting. His artistic nature is of a high quality and is supported by professional and well talented musicians. Cannot wait to see one of his shows again and am very disappointed that I did not go to any of his previous shows.

Concert was ok. First time watching Wilson on his own. Marco Minnemann was playing with him and he was certainly extremely good. Did not like that no pictures were allowed, as a request from Wilson. I thought it was kind of stupid.

Steven Wison is a great talent

by Handyandy on 2011-12-10The Opera House - Toronto

Always a great time to watch a man and a band of extream talent- Radiohead King Crimson and David Byrne look out for my new favorite talent.. Ive seen Steven as Porcupine Tree and had tickets to see Blackfield earlier this year but it was cancelled the night of due to the death of Stevens Dad( so sorry) Amazing stuff. I love a concert where the peple stand and listen in aw.. The only bad thing was the tee-shirts for the tour were screwed up and Toronto was left off and the Opera House was writen as the venue for Montreal ( should have been diferent venue) Hurry back Steven I will be first in line again !!!! Cheers Andy Pitman Ancaster Ontario

Equal to Steven Wilson with Porcupine Tree

by Prog4Ever on 2011-11-21The Opera House - Toronto

Fantastic show. Steven Wilson is one of the few artists around today who can perform his music live and do so better than the produced versions found on his albums. The band members accompanying Wilson are incredibly talented.

    Stephen Wilson show was amazing

by Fugazi on 2011-11-20The Opera House - Toronto

Stephen Wilson's concert at the Opera House was amazing from start to finish. All the players with him were fantastic as he himself. He played tracks from his first solo effort "Insurgents" and his new "Grace For Drowning". All the selections he chose were done flawlessly and if anything a little harder edge to most. His solo work was really good live, definitely a lot more energy in the songs when performed live it seemed. I definitely recommend you make the effort to see him solo if you are a fan, you will not be disappointed in the least.

Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) amazing show

by irishwombat on 2011-11-18The Opera House - Toronto

A totally incredible and amazing show. Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) and a world class band played a set mainly from Steven WIlson's second solo album the new Album "Grace for Drowning" and a few from "Insurgentes" . The music encapsulated a wide spectrum of musical gendres... rock, metal , jazzz , classical , electronic ,fusion, opera ! Each song just took the audiences breath away .. the set ending with one of the most dramatic finales i have ever witnessed in the 30 years I have attending rock shows. Mr. Wilson's music is the most innovated music of our time , its rich and complex and requires many listens to unlock their secrets ...The audience in Toronto had obviously listened ..they rode Wilson's every note and word to the final song "Get What You Deserve"

    Steven Wilson

by chopgood on 2011-11-18The Opera House - Toronto

Steven Wilson is a master. What a talented group of musicians. The music along with the visuals were a perfect blend of prog rock. It was great to see him as unfortunatley the Blackfield show was cancelled. A perfectly paced show in a smaller venue.
