Warren Haynes, Michael McDonald, Jamey Johnson, Don Was, John Medeski and Terence Higgins (along with the impressive horn line and the always sublime Joan Osborne) were on the money at Toronto's Sony Centre on January 31/17.
If you closed your eyes, and made allowances for the two (very different but excellent) guitarists, you might have thought yourself in 1970s San Francisco. The crowd was swaying, the band was smoking, and everyone in attendance was swooning and bopping to those delicious tunes.
While original Last Waltz guitarist Bob Margolin added some colour at the end, the only true sadness was the lack of Garth, Robbie and/or the Hawk.
Why is it that nobody plays these delicious tunes anymore? The Band were masters of their craft, and they took songwriting to a higher plane. I miss them so much...
