About

Completing their seventh studio album was a hard-won victory for The Milk Carton Kids, but I Only See the Moon was worth the effort for Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan. What started as a three-week recording session in the fall of 2021, with Pattengale producing the contemporary folk duo himself for the first time, stretched into a months- long project that found the pair digging deeper into their craft than ever before. With a new studio of their own in Los Angeles and the realization that they were in no hurry, The Milk Carton Kids took the time they needed to be fully satisfied with I Only See the Moon. The three-time Grammy nominees sound refreshed on 10 new songs distilled to the essence of The Milk Carton Kids: two voices blended together in spellbinding harmony, accompanied by subtly perfect acoustic instrumentation. Turns out that's a tough sound to get just right, but I Only See the Moon shows just how much Pattengale and Ryan were willing to work for it.

    MCKs

by Kathy on 2022-10-30Burton Cummings Theatre - Winnipeg

Wonderful show; the MCKs were in fine form, Ken as usual was mesmerizing on the guitar. The addition of Katie Pruitt to the roster was also wonderful. Her songs were poignant, her voice lovely and her chit chat for the audience was fun, interesting. A truly great evening.

    Mind blowing show…

by Tessic on 2022-08-02The Avalon Theatre At Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort - Niagara Falls

We’ve all heard of Simon and Garfunkel, but I want to say that these 2 would blow them off the stage. Between the amazing acoustic guitar work and the jaw dropping vocal harmonies, I’ve never seen any artist connect like these 2. Absolutely amazing, with comedy in between songs. These guys are gifted.

by Jogogreen on 2022-08-02The Avalon Theatre At Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort - Niagara Falls

These musicians put on a “magic” show in Niagara Falls. We were all in silent awe of their talent. Their harmonies and music are beautiful and Kenneth and Joey are very engaging and funny. Truly a magical moment in time. The sound was impeccable at the venue too. Highly recommended!

    Loved it!

Great performance. This is the second time I’ve seen them. All original material of course, but this is the most Simonish and Garfunkly folk duo I’ve ever heard. Kenneth is an amazing guitarist, and both of them create beautiful harmonies. Oh, and Joey is funny as hell.

These guys are absolutely incredible. Kenneth is the best guitar player I have ever heard. I'll be back as often as they are. The opening act, unfortunately, was excruciating. As far as the venue goes, I always enjoy the Danforth Music Hall. It is extremely inconvenient and frustrating, though, that while they are happy to tell you what time the doors will open, they seem incapable of coming up with a start-time for shows :(

    These guys are pros.

by EclecticMusicFan57 on 2015-11-01Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

First off, the show was opened by Anais Mitchell, who was really fantastic. She's and amazing singer and a quirky, interesting songwriter. Also, she was our first experience of the amazing microphone and sound system that the Milk Carton Kids use. It captures sound from a long distance, so the performer just plays a few feet from it and it reproduces both guitar and voice beautifully. It's like being in a big living room. The Milk Carton Kids use humour as a kind of counterweight to their often sad songs, but it works well for me. I find them hilariously funny in the often very long between-song banter, but then they launch into achingly beautiful harmonies and absolutely killer guitar-playing. Kenneth Pattengale is the jaw-dropping guitar man, but Joey Ryan gives him a solid foundation to wow us over. Left feeling energized.

kids deliver the milk cartons and laughs

by foodboy on 2015-10-31Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

i don't know if these guys should be musicians or in comedy. they do both very well. i had compared them to being a cross of the everly brothers and simon and garfunkel. their harmonies mesh together unlike any others today. joey is quite the crack up. their routines remind me of the smothers brothers . the only thing missing is the line "mom always liked you best". these guys are on the way up and about to blow up. for those of you that weren't there you missed something special. my only complaint would be i would like a little more music and a little less story telling. as humorous as it is there needs to be more music. i would still go see them again. big shout out to anais mitchell. intriguing songs that tell a story. great voice . check her out.

    Astoundingly great

by Satu on 2015-10-31Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Toronto

First off, their opening. Anaïs Mitchell has the voice of an angel. She speaks like a small shy child at times but her performance comes from deep within her gut. She sings from her soul and her songs are so melodic and so beautiful. The songs she sang are like short novels. Meaning there is a beginning, a middle, and a (usually tragic) end. When she sang her song Sheppard, I cried. Her songs and her voice just make for a great opener to The Milk Carton Kids. The show brought people from all walks of life. I sat beside and older man and his daughter and two best friends in college. We all had a great time. The Milk Carton Kids are so good. Anybody can agree on that. They're delightfully synchronous and their melodies are always great. What I did not expect was their chemistry and playful banter onstage. Oh my GOD they are so funny. Joey has such a dry, sharp humour and Kenneth is more quietly and pensively witty. They play off each other so well and often went off on tangents about their childhoods, cracking jokes inbetween the songs they played so masterfully. It was part my-cheeks-hurt-from-laughing-so-hard comedy show, part I-can't-believe-this-is-the-sound-of-just-2-guys-and-2-guitars musical exprience. The way Kenneth plays his guitar so consistently perfect left me in awe. I cannot recommend them enough. Them, live, is an experience I wish I could capture and release to the world. They're so, so, so, so special. If you get an opportunity to see them live, do it. There isn't a moment of that night I wish I could take back.
