It was very good. However it was lacking the live orchestra. But otherwise, great.

It was beautiful
by Anonymous on 2009-12-12Kelowna Community Theatre - KelownaRating: 5 out of 5I would like to congratulate Mel, Lori and the rest of the Canadian School of Ballet along with Ballet Kelowna for a lovely performance. The dancing was beautiful. Thank you for a wonderful evening.

The first act was phenominal, the second act was too long and dragged on. The sugar plum fairy was an amazing dancer
Appreciated Talent
by Anonymous on 2009-12-11National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5This was my first ballet and it wasn't as bad as I anticipated. I didn't fall asleep either! We were 2nd row in the orchestra, who do not get enough credit for what they do for that show. The show was packed and it was nice to see so many young people out to support a staple for Christmas festivities.
with a twist
by hania on 2009-12-09National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5It was lovely matinee. Interestingly enough with Canadian twist. First scene opened with kids playing hockey in early century Russia. Cute. Last scene - one of the kids playing outside wearing Hudson Bay Co. blanket. Brings a smile. Overall nice tradition to see the story of nutcracker around Christmas. Good ballet, great performances, however I would prefer better story telling it felt a bit choppy. Thank you
Fantastic Four
by myopionrendered on 2009-12-09National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5This production was fantastic....the artistic display, dancing, story & experience were all fantastic. It was 20 years ago that I took my daughter to her first ballet..the Nutcracker at the NAC...she was 5 years old. This year for Christmas she asked if we could go and see the Nutcracker again & let me tell you I was stunned by her recall of her first ballet when she was 5. She knew where we sat, what she was wearing, where we went for tea and treats after the performance... WOW. I never realized what this experience meant to her and what lasting expressions it had made. This performance was of the Nutcracker was Icing on the Cake...everything about the evening was beautiful and made new lasting impressions for both of us...priceless!
For the 5th time, it is still so good!
by Marcelloune on 2009-12-09National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5I've seen this play 5 times and I still enjoy as much as the first time. I will probably buy tickets again next yeer :)

The dances were very interesting and well performed.
Lovely family ballet!
by ProudBalletMom on 2009-12-08National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5It was wonderful to be able to take my four year old to such a beautiful ballet, where there are legions of little girls of all shapes and sizes wearing their pretty holiday dresses. The RWB did a spectacular job with the story, dressing it up with beautiful costumes and interesting sets -- the twinkling lights on the scrim and snowfall made the production that much more spectacular. My daughter said that it was just 'lovely' as soon as the dancing started, to which I agreed. All the dancers were very strong and enjoyable to watch, although there were the odd sequences which weren't as together as they should've been -- but alas, I'm sure that is common for these touring productions where different dancers perform on various nights with varied groups of dancers. I loved the simple way the second act dances were performed, as a tribute to Clara in a palace ballroom, and I think Dossellmeier did a fantastic job orchestrating it all and dancing himself in amongst the featured 'guests'. Not sure if the choreography was completely traditional, but the Arabian dance was the only one that really lacked for me, as it seemed to drone on and on without the sultry passion I had witnessed in previous performances. All in all, a beautiful experience that my daughter and I will always remember.
Magical Nutcracker by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet
by NSancheZ on 2009-12-08National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5This was the first time that I ever see the Nutcracker. I don't like ballet but I like different types of Art..the Nutcracker by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet was so magical that I didn't want it to end!! The dancers were so very talented. The sets were unique and colourful. The music was fantastic of course. I loved it so much that I'll be going to see the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's upcoming production: Molin Rouge (even though i'm not a fan of the story line!). I'm an NAC regular so I thank them for always putting on great shows. I highly recommend people to check out the Ottawa NAC events.
Nutcracker was a true fantasy for all ages
by Annasher on 2009-12-07National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5I brought my four and a half year old niece to see her first ballet. She was totally enthralled throughout the whole performance and actually started to cry at intermission because she wanted to see more. It was a perfect introducton for her to the wonderful world of ballet.

Nutcracker - Adults Prefer
by Claudius on 2009-12-07National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5Despite the fact Nutcracker is a classic and I looked so forward to seing it, I went accompanied by my 5 years old son. We both loved the first portion espacially with the Bear, the wolf, the mouse, etc. We found it funny too! However, the second half was a bit long, especially to kids. There is a lot of dances and they almost all look alike. My son said to me on few occasions 'is it over, it this the last dance, etc.'. I tend to agree with him to some extent. We both appreciated much more the first half. The decor is absolutely gorgeous, the first hour is 'amazing'; too bad there is a bit of repetition towards the end! I expected something more appropriate for kids. My sister, myself and her teenager we like it way better than my 5-year old. Loved the ending! Thank you.
Nutcracker was disappointment for the ticket price
by Nutcracker on 2009-12-07National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 2 out of 5As a kid, going to the Nutcracker was an annual tradition. I have many fond memories of attending this magical event which would be eagerly anticipated by both my sister and I in the days leading up to the show. Perhaps my fond memories have unfairly placed my expectations too high. The following weaknesses come to mind: - There seemed to be real technical issues with the dance performances. Synchronization of dance movements (eg. jumps) with the music was, at times, lacking. Particularly obvious during one solo in which the dancer was jumping 0.5 sec either before or after the music..while other jumps in this series were executed more in time with the music. Synchronization of turns with other dancers. It seems to me that when 4 dancers are performing a series of continuous turns, they should all be facing the same general direction, and should complete their turns at the same time. This did not generally seem to be the case, and occasionally the performers were 1/2 to 3/4 a turn off from each other. I felt particularly bad for the poor dancer who fell, causing me to wonder if perhaps there was not sufficient rehearsal time in advance of this performance. - The dance of the sugarplum fairy was underwhelming. For me, this dance was always a major highlight, a jewel within the entire work. In my opinion, more emphasis could be placed on this piece, costuming was disappointing here.. - The length of the show should be revisited. In my opinion there are small non-critical sections which could have easily been removed. The first half was a bit slow, which is unfortunate because my 7 year old neice and nephew both slept through the entire second half. When your target market for an event like this includes children, and your performance begins at 7:00pm, placing all of the most well-known (and loved) characteristic "Nutcracker" dances in the second half does not work. Good points: -the set was fantastic. really excellent work here. -the children were (as always) a highpoint. the mice, angels, little kids on rocking horses. there was one little brown mouse in particular who was extremely enthusiastic. all of the children did an excellent job. -the orchestra did a great job. they supported the work on-stage without ever becoming a distraction. which, to me, is exactly what they are meant to do here. Still a good experience and a nice evening. I have attended and enjoyed many amateur theatre and dance performances in the past. My expectations were perhaps too high for this show and I do not feel that I got adequate value for my $237.00
Wonderfull dancing, great sets and costumes
by LouLouBelle on 2009-12-07National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5We took the 2 boys 3 1/2 and 7 years old and they absolutely enjoyed the first act. They were bored and not engaged with the second act yet we tuffed it out for the full 2 hours. The last 30 minutes was very stressfull. I really enjoyed the ballet the dancing was excellent, the sets were varied, multiple and lavish as were the costumes. Perhaps my boys were too young. There certainly were a lot of young girls in attendance in pretty dresses.
Nutcracker better than ever!!!
by Bizz on 2009-12-07National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5My wife and I had seen a previous version of the Nutcracker at the NAC many years ago. We just loved this year's adaptation especially the 'Canadianization' of the show in parts. The dancing and music was great as one would expect from this ballet company and orchestra. We also enjoyed seeing all of the young children in the audience dressed in their best outfits for a very special occasion. All in all, a wonderful experience.
For the young and old!
by Gourmet on 2009-12-07National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5Beautiful set, first half very entertaining for the young ones, second hallf enthralled me. In the second half we were mesmerized by the ballerinas grace. I would definetley recommend this even if you don't have children. Would I go every year? No, but it peaked my interest in ballet.

The show was fantastic. It was very well organized, on time, and well performed. The dancers were beautiful, the music was fantastic. one complaint is that the beverages and food were VERY over priced.
