About

The Waterboys have been led by Scottish singer and guitarist Mike Scott since the 1980s and have evolved through many line-ups, winning a fearsome concert reputation along the way. Indisputably one of the best live bands in the world, the 2025 group features double keyboard players Brother Paul from Memphis and James Hallawell from Cornwall, and is grounded by killer Irish rhythm section Aongus Ralston (bass) and Eamon Ferris (drums). They reconfigure music from all stages of the band's career, from the early "big music" of The Whole Of The Moon and classic album This Is The Sea through the roots-inspired Fisherman's Blues era and the run of in-form records that have poured out since 2015's Nashville-recorded Modern Blues, taking in soul, funk, country-rock and any other kind of music they care to play - and always rooted in Scott's songwriting mastery and a sense of exploration. Waterboys songs feature in the current or recent live sets of The War On Drugs, Bleachers, U2, The Killers, Tom Jones and many other acts but no one plays Waterboys quite like The Waterboys themselves. This year the band is touring their audacious new album on Sun records, Life, Death And Dennis Hopper, a brilliant concept record which tells the story of the maverick American actor and trailblazer. Audiences can expect Waterboys classics, new directions, drama, improvisation and musical fireworks.

    by S4 on 2019-10-09Commodore Ballroom - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

It was a fun concert. Only complaint is that the sound was kept at too loud a level. It would be easier to hear the music, which is what we are there for, if the volume were reduced!

Once again. the Waterboys presented an exceptional show at the Commodore. Two sets of unrelentlessly great music. Thanks for show!

  • Great show, shame about the hissy fit

by Jsull on 2019-10-09Commodore Ballroom - VancouverRating: 3 out of 5

The Waterboys always put on a great energised show. This is the roughly 20th time I have seen them. The band is incredible and Mike Scott has unrivalled talent. Sadly, two things marred this event. The song choice was not my favourite in the second half of the show (my personal opinion). But Mike Scott's tirade at a whistling fan was over the top and not only did it affect his own mood and performance, but it brought the crowd down and created an atmosphere of muted confusion; like a scolded school assembly. I understand how irritating those awful screaming whistles are, especially if you are in the midst of an intimate performance, however a simple and polite request not to continue would have sufficed. I don't want to give up £75 and my Sunday night to be screamed at, even by the great Mike Scott.

  • Great Evening

    by M3n on 2019-10-09Commodore Ballroom - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Mike Scott is an excellent story teller, via song and with what he shares on the stage from his experience. Excellent musicians, vast amount of material. Great trip from the past to the present.

  • Waterboys even better than I'd hoped for

by Belmont Huck on 2019-09-28The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

I've been a Waterboys fan for 30 plus years now and had never had the opportunity to see them live. I thought they were excellent wednesday night at the Danforth. The sound was clear, the musicianship top notch, the song selection first rate, Mike's Scott was in great vocal form and the whole band put on an animated tight show. I've been to a lot of concerts over the years seeing everybody ranging from the Stones, Jethro Tull, the Who, Springsteen and Bowie in their prime to Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters, Arcade Fire and Arkells. This was definitely one of the best concerts I've ever been to and have to say the Danforth Music Hall is probably the best venue around to see a "medium" size act

  • An excellent show but not enough oldies...

by Pacemaker on 2019-09-28The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Such a great band, great songwriting, great players! However I was disappointed that Mike Scott only played 3 old songs in the whole show. I enjoyed the show, but I would have enjoyed more of a mix of new and old. And why 3 cover songs by other artists, when he has written so many great songs that we wanted to hear? I thought that was an odd choice. Still a great night of entertainment, though, no doubt about that.

  • Great Show!

by The Cookietin on 2019-09-28The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Saw them for the 4th or was it the 5th time this week. Mike Scott and crew are always so solid. He knows his audience and always does a fantastic job of working in new material and new interpretations with his older songs. You know Whole of the Moon will make an appearance at the end but it’s the journey that gets you there that matters. It’s nostalgic at times but not in a tired or maudlin way. Nice job on Purple Rain for the closer. How could they possibly come back on stage after that?!

  • Strange Setlist

by Muskie Hunter on 2019-09-28The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

When a group plays their biggest hit (Fisherman's Blues) right at the start of the show (2nd song) while the usual latecomers are still finding their seats you have to scratch your head. When one of the greatest songwriters ever plays 3 covers including a cover for the encore finale you just have to shake your head. There were some fine moments throughout the night but they could have torn the house down by replacing "Purple Rain" with "Fisherman's Blues" as their finale.

  • Where were the band mates???

by Lynard on 2019-09-28The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

Was looking forward to saxophones and back up singers, multiple fiddles and basically the real full deal. But all I saw was just a few guys on a stage strategically playing music that fit the instruments and vocals they lacked for the eve. Then a Prince cover for a grand encore finale??? WTF

  • The Waterboys were transcendent!!

by watermuse on 2015-05-13Winter Garden Theatre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The Waterboys concert, in short, was magnificent! It was masterfully performed and consistently inspirational. And, I must say, the Winter Garden Theatre was the perfect venue for it, and my wife and I had fabulous seats! Mike Scott was in top form. He looked every inch the star that he is, very cool, but he also was very personable -- often making witty and illuminating comments to the audience that were always warm and communicative. His band was very hot. The second biggest cheer from the audience, as the musicians first appeared on the stage, was, of course, for Steve Wickham. He also looked magnificently cool, and his playing was just simply phenomenal. They did nearly all of Modern Blues, and that was the focus of the concert, but, of course, they did some of Mike's most solid hits towards the end -- like The Whole of the Moon, Don't Bang the Drum and Fisherman's Blues. Anyway, the whole concert was transcendent, because, as you likely know, the whole of Modern Blues is a sublime masterpiece. Just a couple of more tidbits: the keyboardist, Paul Brown (or "Brother Paul," as Mike called him) was mesmerizing to watch. He was so physically expressive while playing. Every single note he played was accompanied with some wild ecstatic display of self-abandonment. And his huge perpetual smile was totally genuine. At first I thought he just had to be very stoned on some major drug, but soon it became clear: it was the music itself making him so explosively happy, even when he was just doing some simple clippy chordal accompaniment. David Hood, the bass player, by the way, was from Muscle Shoals. He had a big smile on the whole time, as well. All and all, it was a unforgettable night of musical and lyrical rapture.

  • every concert goers' worst nightmare

  • Wondrous Waterboys!

by Ruddles on 2015-05-05Winter Garden Theatre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The performance dispensed by the Waterboys last Saturday was a tonic for the soul! I finally had the chance to witness,The Whole of the Moon, performed live in all it's glory. The band was tight, the acoustics were brilliantly clear and the Winter Garden Theatre is one of the most attractive concert venues within Toronto - a real gem! Five star on every level!

  • waterboys awesome as usual

by craigie on 2015-05-05Winter Garden Theatre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Another great waterboys show...the band was great as was the Playlist. Mike and Steve performed admirably as usual, and brother paul had enough energy for 10 keyboard players! Can't wait for the next time.

  • Waterboys in a special place...

    by GeorgeA1Fan on 2015-05-05Winter Garden Theatre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The Waterboys put on a fantastic show playing a good selection of new songs from their cd - Modern Blues and some of their best back catalogue and a cover of Prince's Purple Rain. The musicianship of all the band members was top knotch. I respect the artist's decision to have a setlist ready to play for the fans and to have some intro stories if need be; what I could do without, was the constant shout outs from the audience / "fans". I hope you fully understood Mike Scott's responses, and limit your interjections for future concerts. Stand out songs for me were Glastonbury Song, November Tale and the duet of Mike & Steve on Don't Bang the Drum.

  • The Waterboys

    by Andrea2015 on 2015-05-05Winter Garden Theatre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Great show and the band sounded fantastic. The venue had great sound.

  • They still have it!

by Cookietin on 2015-05-05Winter Garden Theatre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

This was probably my 4th or 5th time seeing the Waterboys and they never fail to impress. It was a privilege to see them in such a magnificent building. The venue only served to heighten the experience. Mike Scott handled a couple unfortunately bouts of audience buffoonery with grace. (Side note: if you're a fan of the old stuff - don't worry, you'll get it. But also just know that with these guys - unlike The Rolling Stones, say - the new stuff is quality as well. Just give it time. They're pros.) The opener - Connor Kennedy - was such a pleasant surprise as well. I'm totally seeing him the next time he comes through Toronto.

  • WATERBOYS in Toronto May 2 2015

by gjjs on 2015-05-05Winter Garden Theatre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

First thing you should know is on this tour they play a lot of the new album. So maybe get familiar with it before you go.I happen to kinda like some of the songs, but the crowd in Toronto at least where I was sitting wanted more older stuff, and they where yelling A LOT. OVERALL good show lean to great for me.My wife like the show better last year where it was more of a greatest hits show. I love the Waterboys so for me a most see anytime they are in town.
