THUNDERCAT IN CONCERT:

Genre-spanning bassist, singer, and producer Thundercat is known for keeping audiences on their toes with his head-spinning variety and eclecticism. From skittering fusion and squelching funk to synth-laden electro, one thing remains constant in his music -- his virtuosic bass playing. He's a true master of the instrument and it provides the backbone for his diverse sound, tying songs like "Oh Sheit It's X" and "Walkin'" together despite their markedly different vibes. In 2014 Thundercat provided tour support to his longtime collaborator Flying Lotus, and his stellar performances and futuristic stage wear on the road proved he's as impressive in concert as he is in the studio.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Los Angeles-born multi-talent Thundercat, a.k.a Stephen Bruner, fell in love with bass at an early age. In his teens he became the bassist of iconic LA thrash band Suicidal Tendencies, whose lineup also included his brother Ronald Jr. on drums. By the mid-'00s he was a sought-after session player, appearing on acclaimed albums by Erykah Badu and his Brainfeeder label mate Flying Lotus. Bruner made his solo debut as Thundercat in 2011 with the album The Golden Age of Apocalypse, a kaleidoscopic slice of bass-heavy fusion and electro that was a huge critical success. Following buzzworthy appearances at festivals like Coachella and Austin City Limits, he released his 2013 sophomore album Apocalypse to another round of critical praise.  A seasoned performer known for his mean bass playing and outrÊ stagewear, Thundercat continues to get ticket buyers moving and shaking on his must-see tours.

So disappointing and so many levels....

by BENJAMIN on 2021-12-14MTELUS - Montreal

Last time I saw Thundercat at La SAT in Montreal it was A-MA-ZING ! Not this time really... We were a small group going there and some of us were there to see Channel Tres also. We only saw the information that Channel Tres has canceled on the day of the show on the event forum we never received any notification beforehand about this. The doors were opening at 18h30, the main show was supposed to begin at 20h. NO music or any entertainment or anything until 21h, the show starts 1h late without having anyone as the first part of the show. We stayed for 1h30 before abandoning all hope of having fun that night. The sound was AWFUL, looked like there wasn't any form of soundtest, bartenders gave us earplugs because the sound was way too loud. Everyone around us looked disgusted at the show, the Thundercat improvised for 1h30 with only a drummer with him. Didn't play 1 song we knew, only improv, awful sound, no Channel Tres, started 1h late, no one to cover for the first part of the show... I felt ashamed for my friends and myself having paid 45$ each for this show... SOOOOO DISAPPOINTING, never had such a negative show experience I just don't understand, everyone at MTelus was looking around dumbfounded...

    Poor experience. I blame history

by Christopher on 2021-12-14History - Toronto

So lets start of by saying thundercat killed it. He is always awesome to see live. But lets talk about the shitshow history putout.... So they rebooked the show and didnt rebook the opener? Didnt even tell us ? What if thats why i was going? So doors open at 7. .. thundercat came on at like 9-930. So guess who stood in a dark concert hall with no chairs and nothing to do for 2.5 hours. I saw people leave because we were so unsure of when things started. Ppl in the crowd were mumbling it was cancled again. Then the concert starts and I can bearly hear the musican... sound stage was off. Even when we were waiting for the show to start. The music playing over the pa was bassy and shit couldnt even make out the songs. Then during the concert. I couldnt even hear him sing or play bass over the loud keys. Youd think they would have had time to sound check since ut was the only band playing..... 2/10 lowsy. Glad i got to see thundercat at a better venue before this one. Tohear what it should have sounded like ... i will not be bqck to the history.

    Awesome!

Great performance and love his sarcastic yet humble presence. You can tell this guy loves sounds, and being creative with it.

    Interesting

    by B-Dawg on 2021-12-14History - Toronto

Well, this was my 1st concert in a really long time. It was cool to see Thundercat and his drummer show off their skills with the instruments and perform and sing live. Most musicians do not know how to do this during a live performance and watching this was exciting. This won't be the last concert that I go to see

    Opening set cancellation

by Dev on 2021-12-14History - Toronto

Thundercat was amazing. Although I was more excited to see his opener, Channel Tre, preform. Many people looking forward to his performance. 1st postponed and than a last minute cancellation. Smh, should offer partial refunds

A loud cacophony of obscure virtuosic jazz

    by Dani S on 2021-12-14History - Toronto

I love Thundercat, and his talent is otherwordly, but his set list was a bit of a let down. Lots of tributes to jazz bassist greats from 50 years ago, and he antagonized the majority of the audience who didn't know who his obscure predecessors were. People were trying to find a beat to dance to through most of the set, I could not find the time signature, it was so frantic! This barrage of notes combined with the too loud volume of the event gave me a splitting headache by the end of the show. He played a couple of his hits, so the crowd could actually dance for a handful of songs. The prog-jazz jams were technically amazing, but that kind of music is more of a smoke a joint in your room with headphones on vibe, not a going to the club to dance vibe. Had he played more funky beats it would have been a better show, but Thundercat's skill alone is something worth witnessing because he is such a master of his art.

An hour and a half of bad 'riffing'

by What did I just hear? on 2021-12-12MTELUS - Montreal

The racket that was played out couldn't have been real. It was incredible how he was nothing like any of the top songs on Spotify. I realise I'm not a mega fan, but I was shocked at the performance which was only broken up by breaks where he spoke at the audience for 5+ mins each time. It took 1 hour and 20 minutes to play a 'slow' song where he didn't sound like he just freestyled like a 5 year old with a new guitar. The stream of people steadily leaving was a clear indication that a lot of people were a little bit surprised by the 'music' they heard. Only show I've ever walked out.

Great artist, great crowd, poor sound

by Vinz on 2021-12-12MTELUS - Montreal

Maybe it's about time to realize that the sound experience at MTelus doesn't meet basic quality standards. All lines were saturated, instrumental details were not mixed properly. Listening to such outstanding musicians with this sound system is somewhat a disgrace.

    Amazing

by geeg on 2021-12-12MTELUS - Montreal

Concert started a bit late, but he came on stage with such a positive energy, nobody cared he was late. They played for 2 and a half hours, there was constant improvisation, lots of drunk-talk with Stephen. Better than I could have ever expected, I'll be sure to catch the next concert too.

    Too loud

The concert was ok. But the sound was extremely loud. Drums were superposing all the others instruments

NOBODY MOVE - THERE'S BLOOD ON THE FLOOR

by ChqPlz on 2021-12-12MTELUS - Montreal

Okay, so look - the dude is an experimental jazz bassists that goes on wicked long riffs of his songs, as he is a jazz artist that is doing basically his own renditions of his own songs, which was wicked. The concert was a 24 song set, and he was ripping the entire time. His stage presence was really awesome, he made the crowd involved, and offered many touching stories about lost friends, his creative process and things that made him tick. I was in the front row and was standing 15 feet away from this dude, and I can't even lie, I was for sure start struck. He was iced out to boot - with pretty much the entire shit he was wearing in the Dragonball Durag video, which was hilarious. He didn't not leave anything to waste, and made sure that the crowd got what they wanted; a bad ass fucking show. Super glad that I went, and would recommend everyone go to his shows if you have the chance!

    Great musicianship

by Meow on 2021-12-12MTELUS - Montreal

Thundercat was in high energy all evening while playing his gigantic bass guitar. The show was amazing. He improvised a lot during solo bits and showed his impeccable bass skills. I truly enjoyed the show. I wish MTelus had limited the number of people at the venue. The show was t free east overall.

by KingToute on 2021-12-12MTELUS - Montreal

I still can't believe it happened. Thundercat is out of this world such a delight to see live as a jazz fan and also as a cat person. Got to see something rare, a jazz moshpit 😅

    Don't expect a regular concert....

by nle on 2021-12-12MTELUS - Montreal

Thundercat is not a regular concert...I evidently was not aware of this. I expected him to play all of his top songs, maybe a few others, and jam out now and then, just like any other concert. Instead, he didn't play any of his actual songs and sort of just freestyled with his drummer and piano player for hours. Though they are very talented, this was not what I was expecting at all and the music that they were playing was rather intense instead of his smooth chiller vibe music that he has released. I still love thundercat but I'd only recommend going to the concert if you are a fan of watching a few guys improv with each other. At least they looked like they were having fun.

    What in the world

by Sorsk on 2021-12-12MTELUS - Montreal

Honestly I really wanted to have a good time at this show, but just couldn’t. He started an hour late, and the crowd had gotten really restless by that point. He didn’t play a single hit. It sometimes felt like we were just watching a jam sesh that was too loud, too long, too intense. Also sometimes felt like a heavy metal concert. Really not what I was expecting. I understand that a musician can get to a point in their career where they may not feel like playing the more popular music that helped them break big, but you’re putting on a show to a paying audience. The venue was great, the crowd was good, the show itself was disappointing.

    Unfortunate Sound Mars Decent Performance

by deafman on 2017-10-02The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

We left after 40 minutes. The players appeared skilled, although the song writing was probably inferior to their skills. With a high falsetto and keyboards in a similar range, the sound mix needed some precision. Sloppy attention to detail here as the venue has produced excellent sound in past events.
