Vancouver Canucks History

The Vancouver Canucks started play in 1970, entering the league along with the Buffalo Sabres. Vancouver has been to the Stanley Cup Final on three occasions, though they lost to the New York Islanders in 1982, the New York Rangers in 1994 and the Boston Bruins in 2011.

Despite humble beginnings, the Canucks continued to develop. With the arrival of three key players — Captain Trevor Linden, netminder Kirk McLean, and "the Russian Rocket" Pavel Bure, the Canucks had a winning Playoff run season — making it to the 1994 finals.

The Canucks continued to acquire superstars like Alexander Mogilny and Markus Näslund, and while the following years meant a series of losses, it allowed for the team to draft Henrik and Daniel Sedin, who would go on to lead the Canucks to Presidents' Trophies in back-to-back seasons in 2010-11 and 2011-12, as well as their finals appearance in 2011.

Other notable events that have taken place at the arena include the 1998 NHL All-Star Game, 2019 NHL Entry Draft, and in October 2002 when Queen Elizabeth II dropped the ceremonial first puck during an NHL exhibition game between the Canucks and San Jose Sharks. Additionally, the arena played host to Games 1, 2, 5, and 7 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals.

An affordable way for Kids to see the Canucks

by Mom2Boys on 2009-10-11General Motors Place - Vancouver

This is our second time taking are two boys to this event. Most people can't afford to pay full price for a family to attend a Canucks game, so this event is the perfect way to get the whole family out to GM place to see the team on ice. Althought the ticket says Canucks start at 11AM, if you don't arrive at least an hour before that you will miss the chance to enter draws, play some games, take a photo with Orca and get in the very long face painting line up! You really need to get there early to walk around and take in some of the pre-practice activities. It is sometime in that hour that tickets are handed out randomly (I guess it's random, I've never seen an entry form for it!) to people who will later be invited down onto the ice to receive a signed hockey stick and photo opp.

the event went well. everything went smooth, from entering and leaving the building. i even got autographs from mitchell and erhoff, as well as fin lol. next year, i just hope they have a time slot where you could get a chance to get more autographs. that was the only negative part. other than that, i enjoyed the event and would most likely go again.

    Canucks Open

by Casofilia on 2009-10-11General Motors Place - Vancouver

I wish that the Alumni game had been advertised. It was good to see just how the Canucks 'get it all together' but would have been better if the playes had identification. The cost of attending a game for an overseas senior on holiday is high so this was a chance to visit the 'Garage' An enjoyable morning. Mike

Open Practice - A Yearly Fun Event for Kids

by CanuckForever on 2009-10-11General Motors Place - Vancouver

It's a great opportunity for Canuck fans who may not be able to afford going to the games see their favourite Canucks team do their thing. The atmoshphere is always great at these events. Loyal fans for sure. Definitely a great event for little kids and young families. Good for older Canucks fans to see the new players and the shootout at the end is always fun to watch. It's too bad so many people get tickets and not go. It's also too bad some of the loyal fans who go to the Open Practices don't get to go to the real games, because if they did, they would blow the roof off of GM Place. Oh well, it's the people with the money who keep the Canucks here. It's all fine and dandy when the Canucks are winning, but when they're going through some bad times, it's the loyal fans who are always there for the team. Nuff said......

Canuck's Open Practice - Fantastically FUN!

by scrapbooksue on 2009-10-11General Motors Place - Vancouver

We attended the Canuck's Open Practice yesterday, and I have to say - it was one of the most organized events that we have been to at GM Place! It was great to be able to see the players "close up" and watch what they do to prepare for an NHL level hockey game. Our kids loved to see their favorite players on the ice and it was great to have the players interact with them a little bit - even if it was just a head nod in their direction along with a smile of acknowledgment for coming out to see them. Being able to get close to the ice to snap a few pictures was great as well, and will add some wonderful memories to our family scrapbook! One note though - it would have been beneficial to have the players jersey numbers or name bars shown on their practice jerseys (they were blank) for those fans that were further back in the stands...as the only identification on the players were helmet stickers and they are pretty small to see from 50 feet away! Overall, we had a wonderful time and it was Fantastically FUN!! Thank you to the Vancouver Canucks, and their sponsors for a totally entertaining day!!

    Canucks bomb Canadiens! 7-0

by Lockjaw on 2009-10-08General Motors Place - Vancouver

Seeing the Canucks score 7 goals against the Habs, absolutely priceless!!! There was drama in the air as the Canucks needed their first win after losing first 3 games of the season. There were lots of Hab fans in attendace chanting "go Habs go" before the first Canucks' goal, , but the Canucks shut'em up, giving them an embarassing, humiliating loss. Poor Habs fans will be hiding their jerseys. An explosive win, ya had to be there!

SFU Pipe Band was awesome, Canucks not so much!

by sportychick on 2009-10-06General Motors Place - Vancouver

This is a tough one to comment on...Luongo had his tail between his legs (and rightfully so after allowing three goals in seven minutes). Canucks came on strong in the third period, but it was too little, too late. I still believe....

    game outcome

by yankylady on 2009-09-26General Motors Place - Vancouver

Wow.... at the end of the first period I was starting to be just a bit disappointed. Then the second period action got better, even though San Jose scored and we did not. But I was holding out for the third period, and I was not let down. Not only did we tie it up, then move ahead, but there was great action and some real good playing. Of course when the score was tied the whole emotion of the crowd started playing a huge part in the excitement. After a fast and furious overtime period we were all holding our breath to see who would take the shoot out. And the excitement of the final puck in the net because of an amazing deek and super agile move was totally awesome. That is the type of Canucks hockey that we love.

    Canucks can be entertaining...

by NVHockeyMama on 2009-09-25General Motors Place - Vancouver

It was the first game I've ever taken my 6-yr old son to, so it was fun and exciting for that reason. Unfortunately the Canucks did not play a great game; there wasn't a lot of on-ice chemistry and definitely not enough shots during the first and second periods to generate much fan excitement. But it's pre-season and they were giving new potential players a chance to show their stuff. The Canucks are a pretty good team and usually offer a more exciting game than what we saw. Overall, watching the Canucks live can be a super-fun experience, especially if you don't mind paying the outrageous ticket prices. The only reason I went with my son is because we got a good adult/child deal so it was somewhat more affordable. I think watching any kind of pro team live is an experience everyone should have at least once in their lifetime. Go Canucks Go!!!

    Mediocre at best

by Alberta2009 on 2009-09-25General Motors Place - Vancouver

I am a huge Canucks fan and was quite disappointed with last night's game. Very expensive tickets, mediocre play until the last 10 minutes, ushers who seemingly were not working because people were coming down to their seats CONSTANTLY throughout play and thereby disrupting everybody else, etc. I may not attend another game at GM Place until all or some of these issues are resolved.

    Canucks and Flames

by Masked on 2009-09-25General Motors Place - Vancouver

Ive been to Canuck games since the late 70's and seen some beauties. For a preseason game that was a lot of fun...two goals in 10 seconds, come from behind...OT Shootout win! The Sedins are worth the money alone!!!

    Canucks Pre-Season

by KevinK on 2009-09-24General Motors Place - Vancouver

Good chance for many us fans to take our young kids at a reduced price. My daughter did not orginally want to go but enjoyed the game, asked for a Canuck shirt and proudly wore it to school this morning. Now she wants to attend some of the other ten games we have this year. The Canucks need to provide more opportunity for families to take kids (besides the Superskills) and see the players and game environment live. It is a Canuck town but they have made it so many never get to a game and you do not want it becoming like how Canada follows and loves NFL or NBA but has no life long ties to it. Canucks played like they slept for two periods but made up for it in the 3rd and we witnessed two highlight shootout goals.

Canucks game against Calgary in exhibition!! WOW!!

by Sidsel on 2009-09-23General Motors Place - Vancouver

This year celebrates my husband's and my 40th Wedding Anniversary so I took the liberty to buy us tickets to the Canucks Vs. Calgary exhibition game here in Vancouver. I have been a Canuck fan for a few years but had never been to a live game, nor had my husband. We were thrilled to see a FANTASTIC hockey game. I was excited to see how my team would do and they didn't let me down.. We WON!!! and having the tying goal in the last 2 seconds of regulation time was unprecedented excitement and then of course what went on to the shoot out was just as exciting. I would definitely love to attend other games, but we are living in Mission B.C. looking after my husbands parents, therefore it would take some arranging to do on a regular basis. However we would be willing to do it!!!

Awesome game! Win or loose they are our Canucks and never disappoint. Of course it is better when they win.
