Thanks to Vancouver Recital Society for bringing this amazing concert. The music was incredible and it was more than obvious that all musicians were having a blast.

    Not what I expected

    by mickey4 on 2011-04-12Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

I must say I was dsappointed in this event although the overall response of the crowd was enthusiastic. I found much of the sound almost disturbing and a bit of a cacophony of noise. The instruments for the most part blended and complimented each other but not all of the time and I didn't find the pieces pleasant to listen to. I was disappointed also that YoYo Ma did not play a solo at all and lots of other performers did- and I think everyone would have enjoyed that. At best, I considered it an interesting evening but would definitely not go back or recommend it to friends without a clear description of what to expect. Sometimes I think we celebrate creativity for the sake of it and are not honest about what really works and what doesn't Just because this was an original evening, I can't say I enjoyed it.

by Leylitz on 2011-04-12Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

The main attraction was to listen to Yo Yo Ma, but the best reward was to enjoy fabulous music all together. The quality of the musicians was beyond impressive The repertoire delivered a variety of composers and their rich creativity, inspirations coming from a cultural mixed

A wonderful melange of oriental sounds arranged perfectly by world class, if not the best, musicians out there.

by KLem on 2011-01-24Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Excellent performance. Very engaging recital. The Orpheum Theatre was packed. Quite warm and at times, hot n there in the upper levels. Other than that, a superb night.

can't think when I've enjoyed piano more

    by mickey4 on 2011-01-23Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Lang Lang was amazing and I loved the program he chose. Was a little surprised the performance wasn't more "over the top" as far as theatrics was concerned but the music itself certainly was. I particularly enjoyed his trills and the soft touch he shows where notes are indistinguishable from each other, his skill is so refined. I am so glad I attended and will watch his career develop with interest.

    LangLang was longlong

    by bucky2u on 2011-01-23Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

The great LangLang was a great entertainer but for the young children in the audience it was a bit too long for them at that time of night. In the first half the kids were spellbound, but as we went on into the second half they were fading badly and largely due to the time of night for them.Maybe next time if LangLAng could invite children of all school ages to come to a "Matinee with LangLang" in a relaxed and conversational and interactive way then I think he would leave the city with a lot of inspired piano players.

    Lang Lang - Divine !

by Hilarie on 2011-01-23Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

A magical evening with an extraordinary musician - Lang Lang had the audience enthralled - his Beethoven was enchanting - with Albeniz' Iberia Book 1, Lang Lang transported us to Spain - first flamenco then the harbour at Cadiz and onward to the streets of Seville - a dramatic turn with Prokofiev Piano Sonata No 7 and we landed in the USSR in the midst of World War II. A Chopin Etude for a light and lovely encore - and then two more encores to the great delight of the house. The sold out house included many children who were as attentive as the adults - lucky kids to be exposed to such an incredible performer.

    Lang Lang is the best!!!

by pattycats on 2011-01-23Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

As usual, Lang Lang gave us his All. He played pieces I'd never heard before. Talk about Flying Fingers! His personality showed through. How I wished I'd been in the front row to catch his white cloth! I'm looking forward to next time. He is very generous with his encores.

    Measha was Measha!

by Samher on 2010-11-16Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - Vancouver

Measha and the Chan were made for each other. The initimate space allowed her to showcase her formidable talent on her terms. This is an artist who puts her heart and soul into every song. It did not matter what language she sang in - we got the message. In this recital setting, she presented an image of restrained power, keeping a tight rein on her emotional interpretations. yet allowing the audience to experience the emotional commitment. Her accompanist, Justus Zeyen, was the perfect foil to Measha'a dark beauty and they worked beautifully together to produce a memorable programme. His solo pieces meshed well with the rest of the programme. A truly remarkable experience which this reviewer will prolong with the purchase of the CD.

    barnatan is fantastic

by nutrishus on 2010-10-05Vancouver Playhouse - Vancouver

Barnatan played exquisitely. The Beethoven wasn't the greatest, in my humble opinion, but the Ravel and Britten were extraordinary. I was moved to tears- the music is so powerful and Barnatan's playing is technically impressive and emotionally stirring. The Schubert Sonata was a perfect ending - so very beautiful. He is a joy to watch, very expressive... His encore was ......wow! I think he said Mendelssohn- i couldn't imagine he could play something of such difficulty after this performance, but he is impressive!

Simply, ejoyable listening, to be able to watch a seemingly natural poise, and to see the intelligence and knowledge of Gerald Finley's repetoire made of an explicitly wonderful evening... Thank you

    Great concert!!

by cellogal on 2010-03-25Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - Vancouver

Steven Isserlis is an amazing cellist and has a good sense of humour! The only complaint I have is where we were seated. We were in the very front row (AA) which was definetely a little too close. Our knees were almost touching the stage and we had to look up most of the time. I felt kind of sorry for Steven - it must have been uncomfortable for him to have all those eyes staring up at him!! I think those seats should not be filled. Overall, though, it was a great concert!!

    Renee Fleming Phenomenal

by Choe on 2009-12-03Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

I thought I was going to see Renee with the Symphony Orchestra with a guest pianist. Once I got over that shock, I concentrated on the Music. In fact, Renee's Poemes pour Mi were much more palatable without an Orchestra and I applaude her choi ce. Ms Fleming's sense of humor, evidenced by her introduction of the sections, was refreshing and her gowns and "presence" were second to none. Being somewhat partial to Italian, I felt this was where she absolutely "soured. Well Done! Let's have her back with the Symphony or even a full fleged Opera. BRAVO

    Renee Fleming: WOW!

by thirdbase on 2009-12-02Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

My daughter lives in NYC and has seen and raved about Ms. Fleming's Met Opera performances for some time. She was not overstating the talent of this diva!! Neither my wife nor I are great opera fans but we certainly enjoyed this recital. The programme was very technically diverse and challenging (both to perform and to hear). She was not on tour singing "old favourite" arias!! We will try to attend a performance of Ms. Fleming in one of the more popular operas in the future to hear this splendid performer in something more traditional and accessible to our untrained ears.

It was a real privilege to hear this brilliantly clear effortless voice . Renee Fleming has such a relaxed manner and it felt like a soiree with all her personal touches.
