Vancouver Whitecaps FC History
The Vancouver Whitecaps may have only joined MLS in 2011 (alongside the Portland Timbers), but the team has a long history in the Pacific Northwest. The Whitecaps first launched in 1974 as a member of the now-defunct North American Soccer League and moved to the Canadian Soccer League in 1986 as the 86ers. The team would remain as the 86ers until 2000 when the Whitecaps name resurfaced as part of the A-League, which would later become the United Soccer League (USL).
Finally, on March 18, 2009, the Whitecaps were introduced as the newest franchise in MLS, where they would keep the Whitecaps name as part of the United States' top division. The club qualified for their first playoff run in 2012, becoming the first Canadian MLS franchise to do so. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have claimed the Voyageurs Cup at the annual interleague Canadian Championship in 2015, 2022, and 2013 and count 2013 MLS Golden Boot winner Camilo Sanvezzo among their alumni.

Amazing match between Vancouver v. LA the top 1 seed!
Loved the game and the seats we were sitting in but the opening event was pitiful. Fireworks didn’t go off and 50 year signs were only on one side of the field. Time for a better experience especially for the 50 years. Muggins
The whitecaps beat lafc 3-0. Awesome game. Fantastic team. Great atmosphere. For a fraction of the cost of hockey tickets. Highly recommend!
Really enjoyed the music, drumming, announcer and general atmosphere at this event! Super fun and a great win to boot!!
Easy to get tickets, easy to use app to scan. Tickets our phone.
I've been there 3 times already and will visit in the future. Each time is always enjoyable, never disappoints!
Ushers on mad power trips. Ushers on mad power trips
I had a great time with my daughter and my son at the game, we were thrilled to see Whitecaps win it on shootout, and the last shot won them the title 3 yrs in a row. Great place to be, food, seats over all wonderful entertainment to watch the games.
Great Environment Great Staff we enjoyed The Game thanks whitecaps.
The game was pretty good, good view and overall great atmosphere, if it wasn't for one problem that happened now twice, a person in front of me, turned suddenly and snapped at my 7 years old, for "cheering and jumping". Now I understand being annoyed, but growling and snapping at children at a sporting event for enjoying the game, is unacceptable, if people want a relaxing atmosphere there is always opera.
Great experience well organized clean happy to be there
Hot evening with an open roof. Lots of fans of both teams. TJ scored early and it was 1-0 at halftime. But in the second half, the Caps went off! 3 straight goals and many other chances. Wildly entertaining
Nice stadium with a decent turnout for my first event in Canada as a travelling Brit. Great options for food (far beyond the usual standard option in English venues), with option to take alcohol into the stands… result! Found it unusual that merchandise was available to buy within the stadium halls (good thing), and the central screens gave ideal additional coverage, even with good view points from the seats in the corner. I liked the away navy kit, but found prices more expensive than premier league kits even (surprising), so passed on that option. All in all, for what was not considered a major event, was a good day out crowned with a victory. Atmosphere was probably reflective of the sub-par significance or nature of the event. Thanks Whitecaps!
This game had been promoted as a rare opportunity for Canadians to see the worlds greatest soccer player Lionel Messi play in our home country. The demand drove the prices which I guess we were willing to play because we did. But then neither Messi or two other big name stars from the visiting team came to the game and the atmosphere and experience was not what had been expected. More should be done to ensure rare opportunities like this are fulfilled and that what people pay for is delivered.
Although there was extreme disappointment with Ticketmaster, in that tickets were insanely inflated when a European soccer star was mentioned to attend this game...the game and atmosphere of the building and fans was fantastic.
Overall good match but overshadowed by the price gouging conducted from Whitecaps FC.
Lionel Messi showed that he does not care for the “beautiful game” that has made him millions of dollars and an international star. If he did he would have made the trip to Vancouver to support the Sport that he loves and help promote that sport for both the MLS and FIFA. But he did not. He stayed home. The team will tell you it was the Coach’s decision but Messi has the power to make the decision on his own. Messi could have come to Vancouver and made a short appearance on the pitch so that all of the fans that came to the game just to see him would have had that chance, or could have done some personal appearances to make up for not playing. Not showing up at all was the worst move he could have made as it showed his utmost contempt for the league his fans and the sport in general. The Whitecaps made a mistake in marketing the game as they did with the focus on Messi. They never had any control over Messi attending or not. Once it was announced that he, and the other two top players, were not attending they did start working on trying to make up for it. I hope they will not make that mistake again. The game was fine. But, I purchased tickets for my son, father, and myself to see Messi. I traveled with my son from Victoria and incurred ferry fares and meals expenses to make it to the game that I would not have gone to see. We were lucky that we did not have to book a hotel to stay in. For the money I spent we could have had an exception dinner out or gone to something else that would have been much more memorable.
While I understand that in professional sports you cannot guarantee certain players playing on the day that you bought tickets, this game was sold and marketed as Messi coming to Vancouver. His face was on all the posters and material leading up to the ticket release. We all paid 5-10 x more for these tickets because of this fact. I think more could have been done to suggest there was a large chance that he would not even play let alone come to our city. Unfortunate is what it all was. My boy had tears in his eyes.
Terrible atmosphere and ridiculous lines for food. People missed more than half the game waiting in line for a crap 50% off burger. Crowd was not interested in the game at all. Really disappointing.
There was nothing to distinguish the Whitecaps vs Miami game from other regular season match-ups. It was like a pre-season game but with 30,000 more people. We sat in top bowl and you could tell they were unaccustomed to hosting on that level. Food line-ups were huge (non-starter if you had small kids), no vendors or hype guys. They had a few days to adjust to Messi not being there and they failed. Overall experience was meh
