    Patrons on phones ruined show

by Noah on 2019-11-26Meridian Hall (formerly Sony Centre for the Performing Arts) - Toronto

Spontaneously booked a ticket to the show as I was excited to see my friend from university in the title role. Sitting at the back of the house, I was appalled by the number of people taking photos and videos throughout the whole show. At one point I saw three phones up at the same time, and was more surprised that nobody was doing anything. I got out of my seat to inform an usher. I stopped counting after seeing 10 different people whip out their phones to record/snap pictures. One person in the 2nd row had her phone held above her head filming. Unfortunately it was so distracting I really couldn’t enjoy the performances or pay attention. There was no pre-show announcement to turn off phones and the staff was not proactive in flagging the perpetrators. More should have been done. So terribly disappointing.

    gradually became ABITW

by A. R. on 2019-11-22Meridian Hall (formerly Sony Centre for the Performing Arts) - Toronto

too much opera-type creative license at the beginning but gradually worked its way to being recognizable in the opera medium getting more towards the “rock” in the “rock opera” instead of trying to tell the story as a pure opera where you needed to read the subtitles to know what was going on

    Brilliant performers, disappointing concept

by Nelida on 2019-11-21Meridian Hall (formerly Sony Centre for the Performing Arts) - Toronto

Who would've imagined that the opera based on Pink Floyd's "Another brick in the wall" wouldn't use Pink Floyd's music? Adding Bob Fosse's hospital theme topped the disappointment.

Fun, new and different experience, great for Pink Floyd fans

by labyfan1313 on 2019-11-20Meridian Hall (formerly Sony Centre for the Performing Arts) - Toronto

I went into this not knowing what to expect. I have never been to an opera before and I was hesitant at first since I'm not the a die hard Pink Floyd fan. I decided I didn't want to miss out on this opportunity and it turned out to be a great experience. To be clear this is real opera singing. Not a rock opera. It's sung in the traditional opera style, but all the lyrics are Pink Floyd's lyrics without a word changed. Seemingly all the songs were in the same order of The Wall album. It is sung in English with English subtitles displayed at the top of the stage. Though you can mostly understand what they're saying, just like song lyrics are not always clear to begin with, the subtitles help. It was interesting hearing the songs rearranged and seeing how they brought this story to life. I felt like I wasn't completely wowed enough to give it 5 stars and the ending wasn't 100% satisfying to me. But still I enjoyed it and I'm glad I saw it. I think it was also a great introduction to Opera. If anyone is hesitant because it's an Opera, don't be. It's completely enjoyable. And if you're a huge Pink Floyd fan, especially of The Wall, then this is not to be missed.

    Painful

by Rovert on 2019-11-20Meridian Hall (formerly Sony Centre for the Performing Arts) - Toronto

Left at intermission with a few others. Theatre was only one third full which got my attention and we were permitted (thank you) to upgrade free of charge. It's possible that since I don't like opera, this didn't help but there were possibly two notes of music that sounded somewhat like the music I grew up with.

    Fun take on The Wall

by KItchener Floyd Fan on 2019-11-20Meridian Hall (formerly Sony Centre for the Performing Arts) - Toronto

Fun and interesting take on The Wall. While some songs were completely unrecognizable other than the lyrics (which was expected), some had familiar scores and others were pretty much identical. The singing talent was fantastic and the set design was great, especially with the walls that closed in throughout the first act. From a direction point of view, it started strong but faded through the first act. It was unfortunate how many people in the lobby were questioning the quality of the show at intermission. From there, though, it picked up throughout the second act and captivated the audience nicely. The last half of the second act in particular was extremely strong. For any Pink Floyd fan who watched The Wall way to many times in the 80's and 90's, this is a worthy outing to bring you back. Admittedly, it left me craving a stage show with The Wall's original music rather than a rewritten operatic score.

    Not for everyone....

by G. M. on 2019-11-20Meridian Hall (formerly Sony Centre for the Performing Arts) - Toronto

This is OPERA, not a rock opera. I know some peoples expectations, because of the title and the Roger Waters association, were for something other. Personally, I found it a brilliant auditory and visual feast. There was not one performance that was not dedicated to the highest standards possible. Push your boundaries. Go see.
