Washington Nationals History
The Washington Nationals became a member of Major League Baseball after the Montreal Expos relocated the franchise to Washington D.C. in 2005. The Nationals assumed a long-spanning baseball tradition in the Nation’s Capital, which previously hosted a team of the same name as far back as the late 19th century and enjoyed nearly six centuries of hometown ball with MLB’s Washington Senators until the team moved in 1960. The team endeared itself to the city with its first-ever draft pick, first baseman Ryan Zimmerman, who spent his entire career on the team and earned the nickname Mr. National. The Nats won their first World Series championship in 2019, defeating the Houston Astros in seven games.
Over the years, rosters have included players such as World Series MVP pitcher Stephen Strasburg, back-to-back Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer, and 2015 National League MVP Bryce Harper. The Nationals have a fierce rivalry with the Baltimore Orioles, a series that is known as The Battle of the Beltways(Opens in new tab).

Nationals Park hosted even more significant history when the Nats mounted a 4-3 comeback win over the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2019 Wild Card game, sparking a miraculous World Series title run. The venue recorded its highest attendance of 45,966 during a National League Division Series matchup against the St. Louis Cardinals in 2012.
