About

Transcendent and sometimes wistful, the folk-pop of Weyes Blood (a.k.a. LA-based Natalie Mering) explores everything that drives us, divides us, and destroys us. This sounds like heavy stuff, but Mering is an effortless guide. Though burdened by doubt, she is also buoyed by hope -- her music unfurling with stunning nuance and ease.

"Bob Seger meets Enya" is how she once described her work. When you consider Weyes Blood's otherworldly expansiveness and hook-laden melodies, you realize that she isn't exaggerating.

Weyes Blood's breakout album on Sub Pop, Titanic Rising (named one of 2019's best by Pitchfork, NPR, The Guardian), was an observation of doom to come. Its follow up, And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow, finds her in the thick of it, searching for an escape hatch, away from algorithms and ideological chaos. After five albums and years of touring, Mering has a lot on her mind.

Mering grew up singing in gospel and madrigal choirs, before prodigiously picking up guitar at age 8. That -- mingled with her love of jazz, filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky, and scholar Joseph Campbell -- has shaped her music, which tells stories of both ancient and modern myths. Why, you ask? Because, she says, "Shared myths are part of our psychology and survival."

And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow is out November 18th, 2022.

    Overheated

by No on 2023-03-24Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

It was abnormally hot in there. I’ve gone to many concerts and this was not normal. I overheard comments how this felt like a festival, completely crammed and overheated. There seemed to be an issue and the staff knew it as they were walking around the perimeters each with a SINGLE 500ml water bottle offering sips to people.. literal sips… Then during the middle of the concert a person fainted. Luckily the performer saw and stopped for help. that’s how overheated it was.

Really wonderful. I have never been to a concert before and my expectations were blown. The opening act was Molly Lewis, who was phenoemenal, and then Weyes Blood came on and it was just amazing. Awesome visuals and sounds, I cried at the beauty.

Weyes Blood is even better live than her studio recordings. It was a wonderful experience, if you are a fan of hers seeing an in person concert is a must!

    Weyes Blood and Mandy Lewis

by BG on 2023-03-11The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Mandy Lewis, a whistler, created an intimate mood, made us laugh and had us grooving to her rythyms. Weyes Blood was magical, fresh, joyful and her voice ...just beautiful with a warm spirit.

Beautiful show, over booked and crowded, sound was ugh.

by Genevieve on 2023-03-10MTELUS - Montreal

I know pandemic is almost behind us, but I feel there’s a limit and a sensitivity around capacity promoters should be aware of. The venue was much too full. First part show: we couldn’t hear a thing. So disrespectful of the artist. Big venue should be more managed and prepared.
