Bruce Hornsby and his band are awesome musicians but...... the crowd sitting around us were disappointed as we were that when he did play some of his 'mid' (not really old stuff--- it was some kind of jazzed up version that was barely recognizable. And yes- we all know how musicians get bored playing their popular stuff-- but we are the fans and we did pay $80 per seat-- so we deserve to be entertained. His newest stuff is great too.
I've been a fan of his music for many years and enjoyed his piano playing on this gig immensely. Great band, great chemistry on stage. It felt a little under-rehearsed which, to be fair, had its charms; there was a spontaneity in the music and repartee with the audience that was fun and refreshing most of the time. His comfortable ease of expression on the piano and signature sound are real achievements for which I have the utmost respect. His liberties with the melodies of some of his older material was interesting at first and then got old; after awhile I just wished for clear and simple delivery of the tune in that wonderful signature vocal sound he has established. I would have enjoyed some of the older material more if he had saved the experimentation for the solos or in the restatement of the melody at the end. It seemed that the experimentation was driven more by his familiarity (and possible boredom?) with the material and not necessarily derived or driven by the emotional content of the song. I also wondered if his upper registered has faded a bit with the years and maybe that was part of the reason for his melodic choices. Overall, it was a great night and I would recommend the show to fans familiar with his music.
great show! I just wished that the show could be a bit longer. it was only 90mins..
