I was keen to see our own Edmonton and Canadian Jazz icon, P.J. Perry perform but I had no knowledge of just how good tenor saxophonist Jerry Weldon from New York was. At the break I bumped into him and I told him, "You're a monster!" (I meant it as a high compliment). I told Jerry that he reminded me of the late, great Illinois Jacquet, the guy that perfected the screaming, overblowing style. But it wasn't just the loud playing that impressed me. Jerry was great at the very soft ballad playing when he did a sax solo of "They Can't Take That Away From Me". Simply awesome. Of course one can't forget P.J. He was equally great giving it all in his power to impress. The dexterity and the steady, long phrases on the alto up and down two and a half octaves was nothing short of astounding. The drummer, Rudy, and the organist, Chris, were also great, too, but it was the two saxophones playing off against each other in a playful way that made the night so memorable.
